The German version of the Navy Seals (Kampfschwimmer) carry the Euro version of the VP9, the SFP9M. This is the same base pistol with some modifications. So, if you are worried that the VP9 is an inferior design or somewhat fragile, quit worrying.

I bought one 2.5 years ago. I'm just impressed with all the improvements HK made to what could have been a run of thr mill striker fired strip gun. Thr charging ears really work. They allow a solid grip to rack thr slide. The 3 sets of grip panels and the 3 back straps can be mixed and matched to fit your hand. So 3x3x3=27 possible grip size combinations. The paddle mag tease is superior to the Americsn button release style but some people won't think outside thr box so HK offers a button release for those who can't adapt. Thr paddle release allows true ambidextrous use and can be activated be either thr thumb, forefinger, or middle finger of thr shooting hand. The trigger is one if thr best for a striker fired pistol and really above and beyond Glock. I have Alien Gear outside the waistband holster with a push button finger release and an IWB. Yes, it's not that common as Glock, but it's worth thr hunt for a German engineering excellence.

I was fondling a HK VP9 yesterday at my local shop. I have to say, I don't think I've ever had a pistol fit my hand so well. The grip is very comfortable and just the right size for my hand. Up until then it was my Sig P226 w/ new ergo grip that was the best fit. I believe I will be picking one of these up for my collection in the near future. As always, great review MAC.

I think one of the most important aspects of choosing your gun is how it feels in your hands. I love how the VP9 feels in my hand...love the grip as well! I would highly recommend this gun to anyone.

Watch Hughes Enterprises reliability test of the HK VP9. He dunks it and submerges it in water, mud, and it fired. He also submerged the HK VP9 underwater, pulled the trigger and the HK VP9 fired. I love my HK VP9 (FDE color). It’s a sturdy, tough, good reliable HK striker fired firearm.

I was at my LGS today and handled the PPQ, and the trigger has just as much creep as the VP9 (which is extremely minimal btw), and the reset was essentially the same as the VP9. I've noticed that the trigger on the VP9 doesn't travel back as far as the trigger on the PPQ, so maybe that is giving people the impression that the reset on the VP9 is "very long". But when you pay attention to the actual travel distance I think you'll find the reset on the VP9 to be very short. I have absolutely nothing against the PPQ, but I do prefer the VP9. The trigger on the VP9 doesn't have nearly the take up the PPQ trigger does, and it is just as crisp and resets just as quickly. Great gun! Very accurate, extremely pleasing to shoot and not priced badly at all.

I was at a gun show and looking at a concealed carry holster for the VP9 and when I went to a guy from a brand they call Comfort-Tuk, he tried it in a S&W M&P40 holster and it fit pretty well (oddly enough), so that may be an option for anyone that could still be having trouble getting a holster for theirs. It shouldn't be a problem now that the gun's been out for a few months now, though.

Yeah, HK's really good about addressing "the glove problem" - they do it with all of their pistols, *all* of them are set up to allow operation with heavily gloved hands thanks to all their spec ops contracts that mandate this.

I have shot HKs and they are very well built machines. I prefer the trigger on the Sig P320 to the HKs, Glock (which I love) or the M&P which are all excellent weapons. At the end of the day it's up to what feels good to you. I don't think you'd go wrong with any of the aforementioned pistols. Great video.

Good video, pretty much sums up my experience with my VP9 and PPQ. Overall the PPQ has the better trigger, though the VP9 is a nice overall pistol with nicer ergos-for me. Both good pistols. Hopefully the aftermarket will show them both some love.

Bought mine in September and love it. Traded my Glocks b/c this gun is truly amazing. You're right, it fits perfectly in the hand, it is extremely accurate, and we know it's quality. I don't know that I would agree that the reset is long, though. If you notice, the trigger on the VP9 doesn't travel as far back as it does on the PPQ. When I checked this out, the reset is about the same to me. It's pretty quick on both guns. The take up on the VP9 is shorter than it is on the PPQ, which I like a lot better. I found the break and the reset to be about the same on both guns (outstanding for a striker fire gun), but the take up is definitely shorter on the VP9. Actually, that is why I bought the VP9 instead of the PPQ. I prefer a shorter take up. I have shot a number of different brands of ammunition through mine and have not had the first malfunction in at least 2000 rounds. Winchester white box 115 gr, Blazer Brass 115 gr, Tulammo 115 gr, Zero 115 and 124 gr, Critical Duty 135 standard and +P, it all has done great. As for holsters, I have the BladeTech Klipt Ambi IWB holster, and it works great. shop.blade-tech.com/index.php?cPath=1_13_142#.VJyKH7jD4 Great gun! If you're disappointed then you're looking to be.

PPQ's trigger is subjectively better at best. 27 grip configurations isn't subjective, neither is resale on HKs vs Walther. BTW HK wrote the book on Striker fire. I'm not saying the PPQ is a bad gun, I'm saying the VP9 kicks it's ass. If I wanted the higher capacity I would get the full size SIG 320. The VP9 offers everything the PPQ doesn't. Go shoot one!

I'm up to 2000 rounds with a mix of Hornady+P 135gr, Gold Dots 147gr and S&Bs 115-124gr. No stoppages whatsoever thus far. The trigger smoothens up after a while on uptake and feels better than an Apex or PPQ, at least to me. It's great, glad you like it too.

Military Arms Channel I know it'll be up to your review and who you'll borrow it to to shoot it, but as a female I love the cocking serrations. Helps a lot with the reach pinching slide racking, especially when it gets hot as like you I ended up shooting for a while. Might be ammo related though I mostly shot bulk S&Bs and it stayed rather mild for a while. Hornadys got hot after 100 rounds, Gold Dots were ok. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Germany.

I own both the PPQ in .40 S&W and the VP9 (among others) and my only tough decision is what caliber I want to carry that day! I also own a gen 2 Glock 21 .45 but I cannot compare it to them fairly. It was built way before the technology advancements we see today. Still a great gun though!! I have found some great concealment holsters. The P30 holsters fit pretty well and my Don Hume USP .45 is nearly a perfect fit! H726 NO. 25USP-1. The 25USP may fit even better as it is for the .40 and 9mm

This has one of those wonky lever mag releases, right? Last time I played with a HK at a shop I had to do some fumbling to work that release. Is it worth the extra training with the pistol for the HK quality? Not to mention there's the PPQ M2 with a button release already out there for less.

Good review and gun. I wish they extended the striker status indicator far enough out so that it was tactile though. I really don't see the point of including one you can't feel it with your finger when reholstering the gun. The PPQ, unlike the P99, doesn't have it at all. What a great feature and a huge miss for most gun manufacturers. I wish my Glock had it. I loved having it on my PPS.

Military Arms Channel: you've mentioned that while you've been impressed with H&K VP9, Sig's entry into striker fired guns, P320, left you indifferent. As I'm considering buying one of the two, I'd love to hear your thoughts on why that is. Even better, I'd love to see a comparison video! After all, you've got two well-known companies, traditionally focused on hammer designs, making their first foray into striker territory (not withstanding the pseudo-striker design of VP70). What better opportunity for a comparison segment?

Its a nice pistol, the price point is excellent, seems to be a pretty good purchase. Now if they would make a 10mm model, with some changes, longer barrel, adjustable sights, better twist ratio, the works. As much as I like 1911's, the extra rounds are nice to have. the 9mm is great for personal defense, but lacks on the woods carry side and falls short on the range and bullet weight options. I guess i'm just a weirdo, then again the 10mm may still be popular if the norma loads were still around...

Was looking at this and the Sig P320. I selected the Sig P320 because i liked the trigger reset better and the smaller form factor compared to the VP9. And the proper set of night sights for $50 less helped too. But I think I will get a VP9 later on when my bank account can handle it. Either way you'll have a wonderful pistol.

I'm glad you like your 320. I don't care for them. I wanted to like it, but it just doesn't feel good to me nor does it shoot good for me. It's rather bland... plus, I don't get the purpose of the modular system for a handgun. It seems like one of those nifty ideas that serves no practical purpose.

Military Arms Channel You're talking about the VP9 here? Been watching for your videos and taking pointers from you and your experience, looking for a handgun to carry but I can't get to decide. I'm not a big guy as I stand 5'10'' and to me that VP9 seems rather large to me to carry as you said your height was 6'4'' and the VP9 seems nromal for you. I'm from Puerto Rico and gun laws here are horrible. When I decide what handgun I'll get for carry I'll spend like $1500 on the concealed carry licence alone haha. I laugh but it's not funny.

I also like the size of the P320 Carry model and I hope HK will come out with something similar (though I imagine a good year or more sadly). The only thing about the P320 to me is the bore axis. Now I own mostly and carry mostly hammer fired pistols, so bore axis isn't a thing I talk about a lot as it is typically high on those. But there's no getting around the fact that borrowing the frame from the P250 like SIG did led to a much higher bore axis than is necessary. No reason for the hand to be so far down the grip. That and the gun feels noticeably top heavy to me, whereas other polymer designs do not (even the SIG Sp2022). To me it's not a full effort from SIG, just a way to recoup money from the development of the P250.
@osiris5432
@osiris5432 10 жыл бұрын
Military Arms Channel I'm one of the few that does like the feel of the P250/P320 family. And so far I shoot it as well as my Glock 17. But I'm not an exceptional pistol marksman. I got the P320 specifically to work with my winter gloves as the Colorado winters can get a little rough. When i tried the VP9 with gloves I found the mag release hard to actuate. And I agree about the useless novelty of the modular system. Just like caliber conversation rifles, you just end up with a lot of extra parts floating around for nearly the same cost of another gun.

Murphy82nd I've never had bore axis be a major impedance for me in 9mm. I go from my CZ-75 with a super low bore axis, to my P-229 with a high one and never noticed a difference in quick fire drills. In hotter calibers like .40 it made a noticeable difference. But I have long sense gotten rid of my .40s. And I'll agree that the P250 was an ill advised venture into DAO. Sharing the frame from the P250 has left the P320 with a couple of it's downfalls. But the mags from the P250 work with the P320(just like the VP9 and P30) and the cost savings of using already established manufacturing processes almost certainly contribute to the P320's lower price.

how "hot" would a glock 17 be under the same conditions? (same shots fired in the same time, same time between shots fired and temp measurment etc)

sdvten I don't get why you're getting bent out of shape dude. My point is a lot of people say this looks like the PPQ when it looks like a P30 in a striker version. People are acting like HK borrowed the design from Walther when it's just an evolution of their own design.

nice i just paid one off today for $520 after tax. It was "used" but looked as if it had never been so much as fired before. Still had everything that it came with everything it would have if it had just left the factory. hell most of it was still in its plastic wrap. That is why i like my local gun shop, small family owned/operated decent selection great quality and awesome prices on everything even ammo.

Nice first look and I look forward to your full review. But I will have to disagree when you refer to this gun as a "full size service pistol." I think this is a common misconception, based on people reading the spec sheet without actually comparing the guns side by side. They are indeed compacts, in the same class as a Glock 19, which holds the same number of rounds. While the frame size height is listed as being closer to that of a G17, the reason glock can get two more rounds in that gun or the same amount in the G19, is because the magazines on Glocks extend down bellow the mag well, while guns like the P30, PPQ, and now the VP9 have more flush fitting magazines. The latter pistols mentioned have a "tang" that extends down bellow the mag well, which is where the extra frame height comes from. When comparing these pistols to my G19 with the mags removed, the G19 is, indeed, significantly shorter in height. But with the magazines inserted, they are much closer, with the G19 only being slightly shorter, with all of the guns mentioned being smaller than a full sized M&P or a G17. If Glock used the same "tang" that reached down to the bottom of the magazines like the other guns, the G19 would be about the same size frame height, while the G17 would be longer. But since I don't know anyone who carries a gun sans magazine, the difference is negligible, IMO. Basically, if you can conceal a G19, you can conceal a PPQ or VP9 just as easily, maybe even easier, since the German pistols are more contoured. I find the sharper edges and more squared off shaped of my Gen4 G19 "catches" my clothing more when I bend down or squat and "prints" more than the other pistols as a result. Not to mention, I find the shape of the German guns to be slightly more comfortable when carrying IWB.

If you consider a full inch longer grip than a G19 as being in the same class... then yeah, we'll have to disagree. My VP9 is closer to my G17's size than my G19's size.
@filmfan8116
@filmfan8116 10 жыл бұрын
Military Arms Channel Again you mention grip height, but did you actually compare the height of the guns with the mags inserted? With the magazines inserted, there is not a full inch between them, I would guess closer to a half an inch difference in height maybe less, do to the Glock magazines extending further beyond the grip of the gun. That is a lot less of a gain in height than I get going to a full sized M&P from my G19 (I don't have a G17 to compare). My point is, they are smaller than full sized hand guns and I would say closer to (although not quite as small as) a G19 than they are to a G17 or full size M&P, especially when it comes to being able to conceal them.

Military Arms Channel To put it another way, one of the gripes I always see when it comes to this size of gun is "I can get the same number of rounds in a smaller G19. So why would I want to carry this?" My point being the frame heights listed on the spec sheets don't take into account the fact that the Glock mags extend bellow the mag well, reducing the difference in height. Thus, if you can carry a G19, you can carry the VP9 or similar sized pistols just as easily, IMO.

Very cool! Thank you for the first impressions. I may have to get one in a single shot exemption model since in live in the republic of California. Crappy laws. Always wanted an HK, I've just never had the coin. This new offering changes that problem significantly.

@AndreMT2720
@AndreMT2720 10 жыл бұрын
Single shot exemption means that the pistol is converted to an Olympic single shot style pistol that entails blocking off the magwell so no magazine can be inserted and adding a 8 inch barrel. Most places that offer this service ask you to come back after picking up the pistol so they can give you all the original parts to convert it back to its standard configuration at your own risk. I'm unsure of any micro stamping issue this might pose but I am sure it won't be a problem. Plus, any micro stamp can be removed with a little sanding or the purchase of a different extractor anyway. California might have some crap gun laws but we're not Chicago and the majority of us are smart enough to find clever ways to circumvent Nancy and her cronies.
