My ride on taxi almost got into an accident few years back because he got like 5 phones and a writing pad on his dashboard. On top of that, one wireless earbud on his left ear and one wired earbud on his right ear, with additional 2 or 3 wired earbuds hanging around his right window, which he occasionally switching it in between. Besides driving, his main duties were to take all incoming booking calls, and then wrote it down on his writing pad. Once that part is done, he started acting like a call center and kept clicking on different phones while switching his wired earbuds until someone accepted the order. Of course he still needs return calls to all his clients for their bookings. As a driver myself for many years, I got a habit of not using my mobile phone while driving, and subsequently even as a passenger, I don’t use my phone too. Hence I like to check on traffic conditions on the roads, and naturally like to turn my head to check those blind spots when the driver attempted to cut lanes or turn left or right (without signaling). I can tell you that, if the drivers behind or next to him did not jammed on their brakes or gave way to him, my short journey would have encountered at least 10 accidents. But the main problem was, the taxi driver didn’t know he was cutting lanes dangerously as he was too occupied with those calls, so he will continue to do so whenever he is on the wheel. If he encountered one inexperienced or bad driver not willing to give in his right-of-way, big or small accident just waiting to happen. Personally, I can’t stop people from making a living, but I don’t want to be part of his adventures as a passenger. From that day onwards, I only called Uber. Maybe that’s a lot of improvements now because of new apps installed on their phones, and if I have to take a cab, I will take those parked on the street since I can still check on their dashboard before deciding to board.

It is very danger to other road users. Police need to take action on those illegal taxi drivers
HK taxi problem is no competiton. China has DiDi and taxi service is great. As the driver wanted to compete on service levels. HK is hijacked by the few who own taxi license. But our government only wanted to keep the small number of owner happy and do not care about the interest of drivers and customers. Uber type service is so common everywhere in the world yet HK fail to have meaningful advancement and continued to protect the owner from competition. What a shame!
