For once, Canada obtained a fantastic ship (the Asterix) at a bargain price. On time, on budget and better than specs. We now need a second sister ship, what are we waiting for????

@H Lafrond umm why? Harper didn't get a single ship built, he just liked to walk around in military uniforms. In Trudeau's term we've not only bought and modified a supply ship, we've created/selected the final design of the additional two Prorecteur Class Supply Ships we will be building. The government also got the first of the OAPS in the water with more currently under construction. The Harry Dewolf is a beautiful ship albeit horribly under-gunned because the Harper gov was responsible for the arms contracts. Oh and they picked a design for the new Frigates which is the largest military procurement in Candian peace time. Oh and the government is increasing the military budget from 1% to +1.5%. I'm not even necessarily a Trudeau supporter, there are lots of things I don't like but I like how he's focusing on the military which was neglected by ten years of conservative governing.

@@Caesar316 Trudeau tried to cancel Astrix and contract another firm, most of the other work was done before the Liberals came into office. He also paid twice as much for the last AOP cause he dragged his feet before choosing the type 26, why pay twice as much for one ship and have it built part time when you can build two ships for the same cost then just dock and rotate the hulls. Insanity. The arctic 3 season icebreaker is still no where to be seen and the two Berlin classy AOR's are still backlogged behind the icebreaker.

@ Longevity ? Let me tell you something about longevity. If there's shipyards on the East and West coast it's only because Vickers in Montreal and Marine Industries in Sorel were shut a few decades ago down and replaced by them. Votes were needed you see. I was there when they ''stole'' the floating dock in Montréal and shipped it to Halifax. You can keep your ''Thank you very much''.

Canada doesn't own the Asterix. It's an interim vessel owned by Davie shipyards on lease to the RCN until the new joint support ships are in service. It seems like it's done a reasonably good job, but it was never designed or equipped for military purposes and has its limitations. It sounds as though the government believes that leasing a second ship with these limitations isn't worth the expense, given that the new Protecteur and Preserver aren't that far off on the horizon. Though there could be value in eventually purchasing the Asterix as a relief vessel for the new permanent ships.

Good question GC-L Brains would tell us, we could build 4 Astrix...and bring them up to war specs at the price of just 1 Berlin Class. There is a 3rd Berlin on the books.....But they are killer expensive...something like $1.3B!! each...We need to put the money in for a fighting fleet,(16) Arrowhead 140 frigates at $500M and then, just 6 Type 26 asTF Command/fleet air defence at $1.7B!! The good lord forbid, we desperately need a viable, look at the map, new dedicated submarine force...something like (10) Saab A-26 Blekinge SSK..Check them out! Cheers🍻🍁

It will probably be turned back to the leasing company as it is not safety rated for combat operations
@nonenowherebye
@nonenowherebye Жыл бұрын
@@bradjames6748 No supply ships are really rated for combat operations. RN (UK) replenishment is done by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, not by comissioned ships, US Navy is replenished by MIlitary Sealift Command, which again is a Merchant Marine organization. In any case, though, your replenishment ships will be as closely guarded as fleet carriers, as they're highly vulnerable, and critical to a war effort. They'll be kept at far range, and guarded by a defensive cordon.

I wholeheartedly support west coast shipbuilding but I don't think that the design the RCN chose is nearly as attractive as the asterix,not to mention the years it is taking to complete her

You don't sink ships with naval guns, you shoot down aircraft. At over 200 rounds a minute the 57 bofors is a very effective mid-range AA weapon. Sure they can destroy high speed light naval targets but the main function is AA. You got 8 harpoons on the rails and 6 torpedo tubes for the big stuff plus the 16 ESSM for longer range AA. I would rather see 32 half height mark 41 VLS launch tubes ringing the Hanger for SM2s rather than a big bore 127mm.

Sadly the age of the naval gun has disappeared with the advent of guided missiles, which are more accurate. The only thing big guns are good at still, is land bombardment for amphibious operations. Still the smaller 57 mm is very good at AA. and can change up ammo for different mission or operations.

Cute little boats, but hey, they should be able to fend off a few drunken cod fisherman/terrorists, they get to drink beer and have hotties onboard though.
