I was a Prison Officer for nearly 30 years. I've seen a lot of changes, and a lot of things, people would only see in nightmares. The average life expectancy of a Prison Officer following retirement, is 18 months to 2 years. If that is the case, I have about 3 weeks to live. 😂 If anyone has watched this, and still think they could do this job, don't. If you have a family, are an easy going, laid back person, don't. The Prison Service will, change you as a person. I have, in 30 years, been involved in some horrific incidents, seen many dead bodies, of which, some have used the most horrendous ways imaginable, in which to kill themselves. I now suffer with severe PTSD, and find it difficult to trust, even my closest friends. Contrary to popular misconceptions, Prison Officers do have compassion and heart, and are not all bullies, who think the uniform is a Superman suit. There are many documentaries out there, but nothing, nothing will ever prepare you, for this job. If you value your sanity, stay well away.

The only bad time i've personally ever had on a wing is the induction wings. The rest of my time was spent going to the gym, working and getting stoned. Only thing missing was a woman. Had all kinds of technology. The screws in Northumberland (once off the induction wing) mostly just let us do what we want as long as we went to work they let us be. There were blades and shanks stashed all over the wings phones, pads, computers, shops and poker. Never had any real bother with staff bar induction they show you respect and they get the same back

Had a 6 month and 12 months probation report and interview. Officers could (and regularly were) dismissed at any time during training and probation. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn’t always fair, and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned, but overbearing, regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teenagers suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they had themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer paracetamol, sun lotion or plaster to a pupil, but could not inform the parents when a pupil became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home, but the burglar could sue you for assault because you protected yourself and your own. Common Sense finally passed away after a 7-year-old child was suspended from school for chewing a Pop Tart into the shape of a gun. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I’m A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized that he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

I spent a few months in prison 6 years ago. The place I did my time was full of short stay prisoners and remand which meant a lot of new officers started in that prison and on my wing. Many of them looked completely out of place and were constantly bothered by the older guys who knew how to rile them up. There was one PO who kept mentioning he was new so people should be patient. Of course people bothered him about everything and he was off the wing in 2 weeks

Diversity is great. But when it's prioritized over qualification and suitability, we have a problem. The older lady who started by saying she wasn't happy with non-elasticated waistbands and is hugely offended by abusive language for, she for instance is NOT qualified nor suitable. How she got so far through the process is frightening.

I worked in Belmarsh between 1990 and 1995 as a Senior Officer, I was there when it was a building site and when we got our first prisoners from Brixton, eventually it had 840 inmates and a staffing of 650 Prison Officers, however when you put in shift systems, and take out leave , training, and sick leave staffing levels are always tight, now it appearss they have reduced staffing to 450 and upped the inmates to 1000 , very sensible especially as most of the staff haven`t a clue.

A lot of people dont realise a lot of mentally ill people are serving time for mainly petty offences but officers dont know how to deal with them. They need help not dragging off to secure units because they cannot get their medication. When the bell goes off its usually shortly after unlock because of drug debts or drugs not being passed along the line and it goes off. Then lock down till thats sorted out. If its raining or not enough staff you didnt leave the wing. All doubled up or three up if it was busy, The toiliet is in the cell. Yeah not good. All the lefties who think its a doddle. What a joke. Having served 17 years in a mostly Cat B establishment and being qualified for promotion, having run most of the areas over the years (I/C gate, communications room, fire officer, security, visits, wings etc), I was tearing my hair out watching these people just walk in without even being interviewed, simply because they are considered to have the right 'skin colour'. In 1988 I had to wait 18 months to do all the assessments, interviews and medical tests (I was also an ex police officer at the time). It is an insult to all of us who did go through selection and scrutiny, and when she said she had a problem with people swearing, I threw up my hands in despair. People like her have NO business being within a mile of a prison, and then to complain about another recruit simply shows how people like her can be so bad,, do anything, and yet still get passed. I can tell you now, her C&R skills were abysmal, and she hurt the other recruits because she was incorrectly applying the locks.. These are basics, and yet the instructor did not correct her, or fail her for incorrect application of C&R, which he should have done. If she was so bad in a training exercise, can you imagine what a dead weight she would have been against an angry inmate? You could see the frustration of the training officers in just about everything she did. I also went to the training centre at Rugby, but it seems that now they are so deperate for staff, that all training seems to be 'in house' these days, which I also find odd.

@@ethanhumphries1080 Good luck with your future career. The only piece of advice I would give you is this: Remember, the difference between you and an inmate, is that you get to go home every night... Problems don`t magically dissapear, and you need to treat inmates as you would like to be treated... Be firm, but be fair and talk to them as you would your friends if you want to be respected, and yes, sometimes even protected. I had a couple of experiences where inmates I got on well with, actually prevented inmates attacking me ( twice in 17 years isn`t bad), and also remember , you may see these people when you are out somewhere. Again, when this happened to me, they always offered to buy me a drink!
