@@getstuffed2391 Use your own eyes, watch it engaging rubber dinghies on utube and the hundreds of splashes before a single round hits! As soon as there's any wear on the barrels (which doesn't take long) Phalanx can't hit a barn door - the thing is a random hit generator.

Waste of time and money, are we talking about the same "awesome" CIWS Phalanx system that couldn't even engage a slow, lumbering 1970s generation Iraqi silkworm heading for USS Missouri? Luckily for the Missouri, one of her escorts was HMS Gloucester - a creaking Type 42 which engaged the Silkworm with her Sea Dart! The 2010 SDR which cancelled the project to slave the Type 45 main gun to the SAMSON RADAR was one of the biggest mistakes in history. Type 45’s missile systems can only be replenished in port and CIWS doesn’t work. In modern combat situations, a Type 45 will soon burn through her limited missile stock against nuisance drone attacks forcing her to leave the combat area and return to port - the enemy will know where she needs to go and can lay in wait with hunting subs. The ability to track and bring down moving sea-level, sea-skimming and airborne targets with the Mk8 naval gun was incredibly cost effective and would have doubled the defensive and offensive capability of Type 45 for small change. The naval gun can of course be replenished at sea. Reverse this decision NOW or do we have to wait until a Type 45 is sitting on the seabed in the Strait of Hormuz to make one of the easiest and most sensible decisions the MOD could ever make?

Are you referring to CEC ?.
@getstuffed2391
@getstuffed2391 4 жыл бұрын
You are referring to a time when the phalanx was old and underdeveloped now the kinks have been worked out btw if a missile was so close that the phalanx missed all its shots but another ship was able to launch a missile in time is very hard to believe
@LondonSteveLee
@LondonSteveLee 4 жыл бұрын
@@getstuffed2391 How can something be old and under-developed? Surely it's one or the other? The cannon is not very accurate - especially with any wear on the barrels which happens very quickly - also the rounds are too small and light to be effective at anything but point black range - and by then the kinetic energy and unexpended fuel of anything you hit is still going to cause significant damage. The software may have improved by the hardware is flawed. Hell, watch the numerous videos on you tube of rubber dingies etc. being engaged by Phalanx - while they are moving on choppy sea - hardly any rounds hit - just a sea of scattered rounds around the target. The fact the US and many people around the world use this useless system as a point defence is quite frankly scary - it’s crap.
@getstuffed2391

Reckless Rodent this is the 1980’s the phalanx wasn’t finished the way they wanted it to be and barrel ware happens on all cannons including the mini guns on Britain’s current fleet of warships and 20mm tungsten penetrators are going to be a lot more effective than you think and last I checked their is no fuel in those rounds so they don’t explode just tear apart so much of the hardware in the missile that it cannot function properly e.g damage guidance causing it to crash, damaging the aerodynamics also causing it to crash, set of the warhead early causing it to explode mid flight and the list goes on and last I checked phalanx block 1b baseline 2 incorporates new round, radar, software and a infrared sensor so your hardware argument is false and those videos allow me to give some perspective phalanx fire 75 rounds a second those bursts last a lot longer than a second and I see a lot less than 75 again false argument and point defence as in when all else fails e.g all missiles have missed jammers laser dazzlers and chaff/flare countermeasures have failed then phalanx is the last defence which frankly something is better than nothing the argument it’s crap is only valid if it is used alone but it isn’t it is used in a layered defence which makes it very difficult to get past

@@getstuffed2391 Still a paper tiger - one day we'll actually see if it now works - I suspect pretty soon when China invades Taiwan in November. And as I've said before, when something fast is close enough to be hit by an inaccurate 20mm round, whatever you hit is probably still going to hit you - functional guidance or not.

Useless point defense system. After 5-10 seconds of shooting it's out of ammo. No system to reload it except by hand. The Russians have a far superior system which can sustain much longer duration of shooting and reloading is done inside the ships hull instead of on deck and exposed.....
@z43u
@z43u 4 жыл бұрын
Nobody asked for a comparison between the two. Both have their pros and cons. And the phalanx is much more cost effective and easier to maintain. It’s no wonder Russia can’t afford to increase their military budget.
