@Lissbirds , Victory could fire off about two shots per gun per minute, roughly twice the rate of fire of French or Spanish ships at Trafalgar.
@MsVixxen11 жыл бұрын
6 French people obviously didn't like the video, LOL!
@Ragdollcatman00113 жыл бұрын
@Lissbirds Depends upon the Navy. The British Navy practised live fire and pushed the crews to get 3, 4 or even 5 rounds a minute and would use old barrels etc as targets for accuracy.. That would include the time taken to pull the cannon in, swab it, put the charge in, the ball in, push it down and wad it and roll it out again. Other Navies didn't like "wasting" shot and powder, which is why they couldn't get the accuracy or the rate of fire.
@GNRDisturbedSlash11 жыл бұрын
true enough. ive been to England twice (im from Canada) and seen her both times. an impressive sight to be sure. the second time was just this past summer (2012) and although that time her masts were down and she was more restricted due to restoration work, still a marvel of history. my first time seeing her was 4 years prior and she was in her full glory, just a beautiful ship.
@Ragdollcatman00113 жыл бұрын
@kirkconway especially as the British Navy were one of the few who practised through live firing.. And pushed the crews to fire as fast as they could to get more iron flying than most other navies could manage just like with the Riflemen of the Army being able to get 4 rounds a minute.

It's interesting to hear what this actually sounds like vs Hollywood version of ships firing cannons in the movies. Quite a bit different as often is the case. I don't know how you would hear yourself think in the heat of battle. lol. By the way, do they ever fire a full broadside on Victory? I noticed the lower gun deck didn't get used at all.
@joerandella25269 жыл бұрын
+tlv156 Tbh it's same with alot of sound effects in Hollywood, obviously including guns, which sound like they are constantly shooting subsonic bullets through a suppressor it sounds so quiet.

@Imperiaticus Yes, I know where I'd want to be. One thing - the carronade was a small, hand guided gun mounted on a swivel and would be filled with grape/canister/case, a massive shotgun IOW - and was set on the quarter deck for raking the deck of the other ship to devastating effect. It was named after the Scottish shipyard that designed it.

Truly deserving the epithet awesome. Imagine being on the wrong end of that firepower back in the past, I shudder to think of it.

Why did they never fire all cannons in a broadside at once? Would it cause the ship to roll? Or was it more effective this way?
@luciuspaullus15539 жыл бұрын
James Rogers I've read that if they fired a full broadside all at once the recoil from the guns would've shaken the ship apart. I don't know if it's true or not but that was the claim.
@jamesrogers6439 жыл бұрын
Lucius Paullus Yea that does make sense, as much of a beast this ship may be, it is still made out of timber.
@luciuspaullus15539 жыл бұрын
Just a little trivia. If they're on land they're called cannons. If they're on water they're called guns. Don't ask me why because I don't have the slightest idea, but that''s the way it is.

To be completely accurate, the Constitutions incredible strength came from a combination of design, and materials. She was designed to have diagonal stringers (ribs/scantlings) which allowed the ship to receive much heavier planking (21 inches thick) than the smaller, more common Frigates of her day. She also had planking of southern live oak, which is more than twice as strong as common white oak.

a very true comment. although to call it 'tiny' is kind of a overstatement. but while England cannot afford such a large navy anymore, and they seem to know it. the U.S can't either but doesn't seem to care.

"Leading Edge"? The Victory was already considered an old ship by the time of Trafalgar.
@GNRDisturbedSlash11 жыл бұрын
your are correct. the constitution is a younger ship, but also much smaller and built of stronger materials, as the Americans at the time could not afford nor produce a navy to rival the RN so they built 6 ships to engage smaller British ships, run from larger ones, so the designed them to be superior to anything the English had on that scale. so they were built of white oak, which is partially what has lead to constitution being in such shape. also because victory is so much bigger, its harder.

Shame it could only be a rolling broadside, and only two decks. Also, could they not have put the concussion cannons on the other side of the hull so that the smoke didn't pitch up the way it did - it looked a little weird, whereas if you had the on the other side if would just have been more smoke (and looked like a double broadside. My only other moaning complaints are that you didn't wait until I was there, and that Portsmouth doesn't use this as a city-wide alarm clock every morning.

ah yes yes, I knew of her design, but didn't feel the need to convey that much, as the most direct source of her strength was the planking. so I wanted to go right to the point as it were. but also why I wrote white oak instead of live oak I do not know, rather stupid of me.

Impresionante! Saludos.

true, true but even after inflation the costs England spent in their arms race with Germany in relation to what U.S has spent in the cold war and presently, was significantly lower, mostly due to back then you still had to back up your paper money with gold although you could still be heavily in debt. so England wasn't being given money others didn't have either, which is exactly what happens now worldwide.
