Filmed Summer of 2014
Here it is, the big summer project I've been working on for the past two to three months out at the train club... and the reason I've not posted much from the club this summer. I've spent most of my time working on this instead of running and operating trains.
This is only what I refer to as Phase 1 of the remodel because I still have the front side of the modules that is going to get a massive make over. We have all the lumber and track, minus the turnouts we'll need, but I'm taking a break and gonna play trains for a while.
But for a long time now, I've been wanting to redo the backdrops, and do some mods to the back side of the yard. Now with it done (for the most part), I have a little space to fit in some locomotives that are in the works.
Phase 2 of the project will involve extending the front of the modules out another 12" and will be where my produce/meat distribution center will be, which also will give my ARMN refers an industry for them to earn their keep.
Anyway, next video will be from Kansas City's Union Station where they held the Nation Train Day events. Look for that one later in the week. Also, Shane, thanks again for the track, and Vinny, for giving me ideas to enhance the yard. Go check their channels out, they are linked below, and the "How To's" linked below also.
Stay tuned and thanks for watching!

Track plans, design and track-laying are such a blast. Then, there's the artistic joy of the scenery. Maybe a KCE business train could roll through the new section?

FANTASTIC JOB! Jason! Love how you took the bland and made it seem more open. I am big on Loco facilities and yours beats the pants off of what I have seen! I hope the comment below mine was just a joke, Serious ass kicking if someone messed it up! Again, Fantastic!!

Wow, thank you, I appreciate that! I wish I had video of what this yard originally looked like back in the 90s when we first built the yard. It's changed quite a bit over the years. Glad you enjoyed this. And no, no one has messed it up :D Thanks again!

@RailfanJason 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Vinny. Truthfully... *I* can't believe the amount of power there either, and I certainly don't want to know how much money is sitting there either! I like the backdrop too, though there are a couple things I'd still like to do, but it's a VAST improvement over what was there. I watched it a little while ago, I wanted to see it before I replied to this because, about getting ideas from you, getting to see the open service shed on the finished structure has made my mind up, I am going to install one on mine too. May be a while though, it's one more thing added to a long list of "to do's." This hobby is so brutal sometimes.

So the new track you put in will that be the backside main for the locomotive yard and will they be storage track for departure trains?
@RailfanJason
@RailfanJason 9 жыл бұрын
The new trackage is basically for storage. Locomotives that are what's called "Stored Serviceable," units that have been sidelined until needed. The other set of track, where the UP passenger cars sit, is were they are serviced and readied for their next run. I have an operations video planned that will show how everything is going to work, so stay tuned, and thanks for the comments!
@joetennyson5974
@joetennyson5974 9 жыл бұрын
the "concrete pad" looks awesome....although I'm not sure exactly how it was done without ruining the track.
@RailfanJason
@RailfanJason 9 жыл бұрын
It's done with wall joint compound. And won't do anything but make the track dirty until you clean off the rail heads. No different than painting and ballasting track, just clean off the rail head. Pour enough to fill the desired area, covering everything, track included, smooth it as best you can, then take an old freight car and run it on the covered tracks to clear out the flangeways before the compound dries. Make any necessary touch ups, sand it smooth, paint it, then clean the railheads and you're good to go.

Do you lease out engines? Nice work.
@RailfanJason
@RailfanJason 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Well, the E.L.F. does have a series of units that "they" lease out. Four of them are sitting in the fueling racks. They are open for anyone in the club to use. But if anyone needs an extra unit or two for their trains, I'm happy to let them use whatever they want. Isn't like I'm gonna be power short anytime soon! :D

Looks so much better now! So what was the reasoning on the hidden track?
@RailfanJason
@RailfanJason 9 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The reasoning is a long and, sorta sad story. But the gist is when it was first built it was used quite a bit (used it to set up and run consists out into the facility), but with the big recession and not as many train shows, aging members, and dropping memberships, we've not done any traveling for quite a while. So everything sits out on the layout at all times and there's no real need for it anymore. So I put the space to use in this manner.

Ahem! Just . . . one . . . Tunnel Motor, Jason? Listen here, your darn RR of choice gobbled up MY RR of choice (SP, or EsPee as I prefer to spell it!) and my beloved SD45's, SD9's and SD-40T and 45T's got all sullied up with your very LOUD race car yellow ('Armour' Yellow my ass. Who ever heard of Armour Yellow? Made up by UP brass I'd say!), and we had HUNDREDS of those mighty and stand out unique looking Tunnel motors, and you call yourself a UP modeler? I say "HAH!" I say it again: "HAH!" So, listen up, Jason! If I don't see at least . . . ummm . . . fiv, no, SIX! SP configured Tunnel Motors on this layout by the next video you post, I'm going to drive all the way from California to your club and when nobody's looking, I'm gonna rub the most god awful graffiti dry transfers all OVER your beloved UP 'Armour Yellow' (HAH!) loco's and ruin the whole lot, got it? Long Live EsPee!!!!! :)
@RailfanJason
@RailfanJason 8 жыл бұрын
At one point, I was an SP modeller. That Tunnel Motor was originally in SP paint. Southern Pacific is one of my favorites, but Tunnel Motors and SD45s are some of my faves too. But as I model (for the most part) contemporary, UP doesn't even have them anymore, I'm doing good to have the one I do. At one point I had three or four, plus an SD45T-2 in the works, plus the '45T-2 and GP60 I still have in the SP Speed lettering scheme, just with a UP numbers on them.. I don't see how Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray is any more or less humorous than SP's Lark Dark Gray and Scarlet Red. Just sayin'. ^^

Too many tracks too close to the edge of the table. WAY too many engines parked or staged on an engine yard that is realistically designed for half of those locomotives. Each locomotive "parking" track is half the scale footage it should be. Each locomotive is WAY, WAY, WAY too close to turnouts (very unrealistic).It is a shame that all that money is invested in all of those locomotives, instead of bigger benchwork, and code 83 track compared to the 1950's code 100. Keep trying to make a kids design into an adults. lol
@RailfanJason
@RailfanJason 8 жыл бұрын
Oh, a rivet counter. Nice. Thanks for your opinion, but it's not yours. It serves the purpose it was designed and intended for. Nothing in model form is ever going to be truly accurate to the real thing, space just doesn't allow for it. Modelers license has been taken, and there's no need for insults. It's not changing, don't like, don't watch. Good day. ^^

Dude could you be a bit more of an ass about it. It's model trains. It's plastic on rails. Calm down. Besides what does it matter to you. It's not your layout. If you want to be down the the millimeter on stuff do it on you own layout. There is no rule book for this hobby only make beleaive referees like yourself. Talk about acting like kids huh?

+Robert Rick Moorman yard in Bellevue Ohio has staging tracks outside of the engine facility to ready engines for outbound trains. Where as these tracks do allow for a 4x4 or golf cart between them, they are almost like a small classification yard for locomotives. Slop power sits on them all the time between being serviced and inspection, to being put on outbounds. Not many yards have a set up like this, but Bellevue does, therefore, even if modelers licence was taken, it would be prototypical anyway as clearly there is a prototype for literally anything. Sir, I would gladly teach you more about things that are and are not prototypical, but my fingers are getting carpal tunnel. Peace.
