Filmed 09/23/17
FINALLY... After two months of videos form everywhere but my 'home" layout, we're back! This was filmed the same day as the UP Family Days video from a couple weeks ago. After I left Neff Yard that day, I headed straight to the club and got to work filming this ops session.
This time, I made a little more of an effort to include some run-bys and/or meets with other trains, rather than this being all switching. The more I use these units, the more I like them. Athearn did a very good job with these '40Ns. The lights could be brighter, but that's nothing switching to LEDs wont fix.
The Rock Island units belong to Ron; he's the one who built the Industrial Park. The Southern Pacific train is our club VP Bill's. He just had those two units weathered and had sound installed. The Amtrak train is mine, with sound and lights done by Shane (thebrakeman17). It's an Athearn unit also, and yes, I know Amtrak's real 822 is a P40DC, not the 42 as I have it labeled in the video. But then the model Athearn is using for the 822 is a P42. So, it's correct... but also not correct :D
Anyway, this is part 1 of 3. So you know what's coming up. Wednesday I'll have more railfanning from a couple Monday's ago when I was at Kansas City's Union Station. Like usual, stay tuned for more, and thanks for watching!

MAN! This is one of the all-time great setups. Could be dozens of towns in the Midwest. Had a little problem with lack of UP loco weathering (your rolling stock has outstanding weathering.) It is plausible that these locos just came from refurbishing at Bailey Yard, so no biggie. Repeat: OuTsTaNdiNg!!

Hi Jason, great video of the op session. The picture and sound quality was excellent. I like how the engines were operated at prototypical speed. Looking forward to seeing the next video. Randy

Thanks Randy, appreciate it. Camera is actually pretty beat up, but it still does the job. I think Athearn may have upped their game because they operate amazingly well. Makes that slow switching speed easier to do.

That was REALLY cool! I love the realism of the scenery. About the only time I didn't think I was watching this at full scale was the couple times someone walked past in the background. I am working on my second layout and would consider myself very lucky to even come close to the level of realism shown here....I could have been looking out the second story window of a trackside building watching this at normal scale. Great job!

As a fun fact the horn direction signals does not need to be sounded in normal switching only grade crossing signals if applicable. Its a good neighbor thing approved by the FRA.

What was the idea or purpose behind the SD40-2 locomotives that had the longer snoop nose? In my collection of over 60 mostly Kato N-scale locomotives currently on my layout, I have a pair of Santa Fe's and a pair of Canadian Pacific's with the longer nose and always wondered why EMD did that. I typically run each pair along with 2 or 3 of the regular SD40's as a 4 or 5 unit lash up which I think looks cool, but seldom do I notice other snoot nose SD40's on the tons of other KZbin videos of model railroads I watch.

The SD40-2 is unique with the large rear porch, but these SD40-2 snoots are just perfect for spotting. However, the variants among engine cabs even within a specific category is surprising. Some are difficult to discern, e.g., Admiral Cab. And, I often wondered about the realism of the sound on the model engines. A good comparison, at least for the SD40-2, is at kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYrbiaOKqa6fY8k. The decoders do a pretty good job, better than I thought.
@RailfanJason
@RailfanJason 6 жыл бұрын
SD40-2s are always a good looking locomotive and it's great that they were so well built and reliable, that they are still in use today, many having been rebuilt two or three times in their lives. Unlike NS, CSX, and even BNSF to a certain extent, UP is the only railroad who has not changed the original shape of the cab. These latest rebuilds have earned them the new designation SD40N and I've been able to film a handful of them over the passed 3 months. I've been up close and personal and the sound on the HO models is pretty good. I have no complaints about them.
