Helen and Janet are both genuinely lovely ladies. Helen did fantastic work on Janet's house - the craft room in particular looked absolutely beautiful after Helen had organised it. Helen has a lovely character, I think she would be perfect as a home help for women with post-partum depression, disabled people and elderly people. On the other end of the scale, she might enjoy being a party or events organiser. I thought both Helen and Janet were lovely people, wouldn't it be nice if they became friends?

In one of these shows, one of the OCDs said that she doesn't like to clean, it doesn't bring her joy, it's just something she has to do, that's why is a pathology and not a hobby. It's not a matter of what she could be doing with the time she spends cleaning, it's the fact that she can't help herself but cleaning.

The clean lady has a huge house and a family with a husband, 2 kids, and a dog. It does take time to keep everything nice and clean and organized, and she is a work from home mom. Maybe she could only clean 3 hours a day but assign each of her children 30 minutes a day of chores to do to. It could help them learn more responsibility and cleaning skills that will help them in their adulthood.

@@xannay Good point, I think there are life lessons in that. Personally, I used to have this fear of doing something and it not being perfect. Sometimes it would even prevent me from trying new things. Over time, I started realizing that when you do something new, you will likely be bad at it, even if you tried your best. But the key is to just keep trying and getting better with each attempt. So yeah, if she doesn't allow the kids to clean as they won't get it right, she'd be teaching them they are bad at cleaning and they shouldn't even try b/c they won't get it right. Not a good thing to take into adulthood. Being good at cleaning is def a skill...

I am 50 and would definitely wear a fairy cardigan. Little advice on the final cleanup...the lids on the containers need to be removed. She would more readily toss her supplies in them. I did this with my hubby and his craft supplies. It worked like a charm.

I liked both of them. Knitting ladys home wasnt terrible but it did deserve a clean and tidy. Plus decluttering reduces anxiety, so its great for peace of mind. The woman who was doing all the cleaning is motivated and lovely, she could definately use those skills out in the workforce to bring more pleasure into her day other than a monotonous cleaning regime. If the woman with the huge home hired someone to take care of her grass, she would have more time to actually make money to pay them. The hoarder probably doesn't wear 90% of those clothes. They only showed a few individual items but if you pay attention to the floor and even the finished clean closers, she had a ton of clothes even after the clean up. It’s also a lot less about the number of clothes and more about that she clearly had a habit of hoarding things she doesn’t need and it’s bad for health and home.

I know someone ( Male) who insists he is not "Domesticated " insists on hiring a cleaner every week, who can't Iron a shirt or put a washing machine on. His wife totally spoilt him, ( now separated ) he has no idea how to efficiently sweep the steps on the terrace, hence ignores it. Incompetence or Ignorance that is not the Man's role? I was taught from an early age to - Cook, launder, basic sowing, buttons etc, Iron. My father was ex forces & has stood us in good stead as adults. The hoarder is 'neurodivergent.' This is a word that keeps cropping up more and more often. Her brain pathways work for her - but not for people who are not neurodivergent. Hoarding also has to do with safety and comfort. The hoarder needs to be surrounded by stuff (walled) to feel safe. Lots of psychological trauma here - but they never adress this. Neurodivergents need to be taught different pathways in their brains, and this is a very long process.

However we don’t need to be “taught different pathways in our brains”- that sounds condescending and a lot like ABA therapy which often traumatises neurodivergent children. We just need acceptance. We’re simply a different neuro type. Also, just to clarify for anyone reading, not everyone who is neurodivergent has a messy home - my home is clean and tidy and I have autism, adhd and c-ptsd. Admittedly I have to live with a lot less stuff than most people because I can’t deal with a large inventory of things.

My stepkids' mom used to tell the kids I was just fussy/ dull/ stuck-up for wanting a clean house, and a meany for making the kids participate in cleaning. They were used to rabbit trails thru filth. Then the kids started to realize that we didn't have clouds of fruit flies, no cupboard moths, no ants, no moldy patches of carpet. They started to realize that their constant nasal congestion and coughs eased when they were at my house. They noticed that it was easy to find things when they wanted them, and that they felt good about having friends inside the house...

My mom told me that when she was younger, her mom would deep clean the house every single day. Vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing toilets and showers, dusting, etc

Substitute drug addiction for hoarding. Same principle. Hoards should cleaned up, period. Then the hoarder should. Be monitored . Hoarding affects others and should be treaded as a whole family is affected. The needs of the many outweigh the selfish needs of one oblivious, spoiled, egotistic, unloving family member. In the long run you really are not doing them any favors by mollycoddling them. You know these people a enablers, especially the psychiatrist.

I know people think the compulsive cleaners are bad but I kinda admired them and wish I was like them because I'm like these hoarder people. I love buying new things and I've also got lots of presents for birthdays and Christmases that I love, so I have accumulated a lot of stuff including crap over the years. I have a phobia of cleaning and tidying for some reason yet I feel bad that I don't. I have started getting rid of stuff. So far I've gotten rid of lots of stuff in the last 2 years and even over the years and I've started selling my stuff as well. It seems no matter how much stuff I get rid of there's still a lot of stuff. I wish I was a little bit more like Helen. Not as extreme but alot more like her

The OCC woman lives in a 4,000 s.f. house and has all the space needed to properly house her wardrobe, so she can easily have 600 pieces. The other woman's house is less than 1,000 s.f., and doesn't have real closets, only wardrobes (which are very hard to fit much into), so she doesn't have the luxury of space to spare. There's nothing at all wrong about having an app to help a person choose their clothes for the day. It's no different than having a personal dresser who would come into the bedroom and rummage through the closet and choose one's clothes for them (it's what was done about 150 years ago in wealthy households).

@@jb6712 If you need an app to determine what to wear or how to catalogue clothing, you need to downsize. 600 articles of clothing? That's practically 2 years worth of things to wear and never wear the same thing twice. OCC woman needs professional mental help just for that, imo
