This episode I share how inflation is triggering my need to hoard. I want to hold onto everything because if I need to buy it, it will cost me triple the price! I don’t want to fall into old patterns because of fear. It will be okay and this too shall pass. I cannot control inflation but I can control my spending. This episode we focus on Pantry Organization because it is my food budget that has grown exponentially!!
I also am doing a March No Spend Challenge. If you would like a copy, please email me at hoardersheart@gmail.com with the title: March No Spend 2022 and I will send you the PDF to print out!

My grandma that raised me was born in the Great Depression. Her mother died due to complications from child birth. Her father, having 6 other children, had to give her up. The trauma of being given up and lack from the depression, started a life long struggle as an adult hoarder. Found you on the Minimal Mom's video, and I am so appreciative of your channel and helping me understand her and actually heal the trauma from my childhood of growing up in an extreme hoarder's home, including animals. Thank you!

Please remember, "expired" does not mean bad. It is generally a date by which the store must remove it from the shelf or sell it. It is not often for the consumer. Canned, jarred and boxed goods are fine well beyond that date. Dairy product such as milk have a use by date and those goods are generally still fine to consume at least one week past that date. Cream cheese, however can be kept in your fridge for up to 9 months past the "sell by" date and be just fine. Food is expensive and I encourage everyone to do a little research on those dates and save yourself some dollars and don't be so quick to throw away perfectly good food.

I'd like to suggest that you base your meal plans on your perishable foods kept in the fridge. I always look in the fridge and identify what is imminently going to go bad, and make something based on that so that we're eating the fresh, healthiest, nutrient-dense foods first. For the most part, the pantry foods should be supplementary or complementary to those fresh food meals.

We have a plastic box with extra food (cans, rice, oil) that we started with when the pandemic began. Since I live in Europe, I'm going to send all the cans to Ukraine through our local church. If they can't go into the country, there are still refuges in Poland and other countries. It's interesting how the perspective shifts when such big events are happening so close to you. I can refill the "pandemic box" again, and I can affford to buy food even if it's getting more expensive. Maybe there are videos about minimalistic grocery shopping. I really should start with meal planning... Great work keeping the pantry organized!

My initial response to the increase in the cost of food and the possibility that what I needed wouldn't be there when I needed it was to stock up. Instead I did a quick inventory, and made sure that my emergency meals were stocked and ready so I didn't let the panic set in. I did a " shop the freezer " challenge for February so I could get through the deep freezer in time to defrost it before Spring. Thank you for being such an inspiration and for showing us all it's ok to go at our own pace while dealing with our hoarding tendencies and ADHD.

I LOVE how you're talking about how hoarding actually causes you to spend MORE! Food is so easy to overbuy, or buy things you don't need, and then it ends up going bad which is just wasting money. We forget how much we can make with just basics like flour, oats, eggs and butter and get caught up in buying pre-made food that's not even good for us. Inflation can be reframed to be positive if it causes us to reconsider what we actually NEED and stop buying excess or wasting money on junk food or "pantry" items that we don't actually need! I'm focused on buying veggies and proteins, putting my dollars towards the ingredients I need to cook good fuel for my body, and I don't even walk through the bulk of the grocery store aisles with snacks and pre-made things. I can make my own soups, granola for cereal, etc. in bulk really easily and make a giant amount for way cheaper than one small can or box costs. Well done in creating an inventory and shopping list and sticking to it! We should all be aiming to use UP all the food in our houses and being thankful for what we DO have! We only need on hand what we need to cook for 1-2 weeks, and we only need to replace what we've totally used up.

Once about every 3 months, I'll run though and organize the pantry, freezers and fridge. I put all the expired stuff on the counter and half, quarter bags of fries, chicken nuggets, popcorn chicken ect. And that is what I make for the day. You'll know if something is really bad after the date. Doing it a few times a year keep things pretty well rotated. I keep quite a bit of food. And the past few months I like to keep everything pretty stuffed. I can't help it. If I know we use it and get a few. The current world situation(s) is so triggering.

I can related to the feeling of wanting to stock up on certain foods. When the pandemic started, my son was too little to understand why we didn't have certain items at home (under 2). I remember him asking for "comb combs" (Honeycombs) and they were nowhere to be found in stores. For quite a while, we would get a box of Honeycombs every time we saw them because we were worried about running out. It's a hard habit to break, especially when it brings up a sad memory. *Disclaimer: I completely understand that there are much worse problems in the world, and my son was lucky to have food in general. Nevertheless, it broke my mama heart when I couldn't give him "comb combs".

I also know the basics that we use all the time (like you with olive oil) so if they go on sale I will buy one to have as backup in the pantry. Don't worry about expiry date once packets are dry they really are good to go. Like the corn starch it doesn't have a shelf life once it'd dry you can still use it. I think we waste so much money throwing things away when there really is no need. I do a monthly meal plan it has saved me so much money, I always make a little extra so anyone at home can have it for lunch. I never throw food out now .

Really good! Weekly mealplans is also really good for avoiding multiple trips to the grocery store. Also i don't know if this is something for you but i saw someone on social media putting food that was close to expiration in a basket on the counter so that it reminded them to use these things up soon. And if your anxiety kicks in and you are tempted to buy more food you could only buy dry goods like pasta or rice that doesn't expire quickly so you don't lose so much money every time.

The current crackers cookie granola box becomes the OPEN snack container. Can't get a new goldfish if there is one open, OR, can't open a new box/bag of snacks if there isn't room for it in the open snack container. One thing that helps me is that I don't buy anything that isn't on the list. I always make a grocery list before I go. Sometimes, it has 3 items on it and other times it could have 100 items. If it isn't on the list, it doesn't go into the buggy. I've taught my children not to ask for snacks when we are shopping. They know that I only buy from the list because it means that we must already have that snack or something that needs to be ate at home. It took a while to sink in, but now they know. That has reduced throwing away food that becomes stale and saved us money. I told them the extra money we save is for their after school activities or a vacation. The love it and feel like they are participating in saving money for fun!

I've always kept a well stocked pantry (as did my parents before me! We have a little thing here in Michigan called WINTER lol!) But I'm picking up a few more items (without busting my budget!) And...for things like beef - hey I'm transitioning over to pork and more chicken! And if it really comes down to it, I'll buy margarine instead of butter! (I'm a 60's/70's kid! I was raised on margarine!) With food prices going up, I don't 'need' fancy food. I've always bought store brand over name brand and I won't be paying the long dollar for organic or for the latest 'fad foods' (keto, etc)

A little hack for your oil. Decanter it into an oil spray bottle. It really makes it last longer, as you use the right amount.

I do a pantry/freezer challenge every 3 months or so.I spend only on fresh fruit and veggies but for 2-3 week. I only plan and eat what’s in my pantry/freezer. I can then assess what I used and what was a waste of $.

Your pantry is very controlled and a bit on the small side for a family. Good Job. On another note Pepper would love a box with a door and windows. The kids could decorate her house!

It’s not a bad idea to stock up on items your family uses when there is a sale. I think you just have to be realistic regarding if it will be consumed before it expires, and there also needs to be a dedicated limited space for extra food.

Right?!! It can feel hard at times: either high prices or empty shelves. But we will be okay, we just need a healthy balance of a stocked organized pantry and not stockpiling hoards of food.

Have you thought about removing all the granola bars, etc from their boxes? They have clear labeling on their packaging. You can just dump them in the bin and that way you don’t have to worry so often about empty boxes in the cabinet!

I have a rule (since getting out of debt except for our mortgage) that, if the money isn't in my credit union, I do NOT use my credit card (because I pay my credit cards off MONTHLY!) Why do I even have a credit card? Well, it maintains my credit score. But mostly, I earn rewards! (I just received $350 from Sam's Club!). In the past week, I decided to close any credit card that I have not used in the past year! This gives me peace of mind that it won't be hacked! For one of my cards that I do not want to close, but I also do not want to use (due to low buy or no buy), I froze my account from any new purchases!

Having a well stocked pantry isn't hording, it's sensible, especially given the current situation. Having it well organised and making sure things are stored well so they do not spoil before being used is of course a good idea though. Remember that God might provide for you by giving you the capacity to build up a pantry now.
