I believe the term "Mag Wheels" comes from the early Magnesium wheels you're talking about. Growing up, we called all aftermarket wheels "Mags" even if they were made from steel or aluminum. The first things we'd do to a car is jack it up in the rear and put a set of Mags on it. Made it go much faster.
@HotRodHoarder4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I typically refer to any vintage aftermarket wheel as a "mag wheel", even if it's a Cragar, Keystone or whatever. I love the looks of a '60s or '70s car with mag wheels.
@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS4 жыл бұрын
I had 10 of them once in 1992. Traded my crashed 72 Demon for a pair with good tires, my 71 Monte Carlo with burned trans had 4 and my 70 SS Monte Carlo had 4! (Plus them snazzy air shocks for jacking it up)

Back when I was in high school, chrome wagon wheels, modulars, and directionals were all the rage. Nowadays, all three styles are discontinued.
@kennethlaw52164 жыл бұрын
That's because they all sucked. I grew up then. People asked me when I put new wheels on my 68 why I didn't buy directional's. I said because they look like shit and people will hate them in the near future. After I put my wheels on people said yes those look way better on that truck. Now it's 30 years later and the wheels I put on still make that truck look right. People get all caught up in these fads. Paying thousands of dollars on big stupid wheels that ride like crap get curbed easy and some time in the not to distant future you won't be able to buy tires for. It's all in your tastes on wheels and it's your money to buy what you want. But I work hard for my money and like to buy things that will last me a long time.

Be careful about telling about those ole wheels etc. People will start raising the price or keeping for their self to the person comes along, that just has to have them, price don't matter. Til next time, keep hoarding an hope to meet you one day. Peace n love! outta here.

i have two original halibrand 15x8 wheels, no windows, very early wheels, i saw the exact wheel on a site that buys and sells vintage wheels. these are two bolt pattern wheels, 4 1/2 and 5 in, they came off a front eng dragster, came from thomas bros performance enterprises in san antonio tx in late 70s when he closed the shop, neither of us can remember the name of the dragster at this time, wheels need cleaning and are for sale.

Those three spoke wheels used in the Indy 500 are called Dymag wheels. They were made in mag originally and later aluminum for lower level open wheel road race cars like Formula Ford, F2000, Sports 2000 and others small racing cars. I've owned several sets in 13 x 5, 13 x 6 and 13 x 8, all in aluminum. The 3 spoke Dymags used at Indy were also used on some Formula 1 cars in that era. I've never seen the mag versions but the aluminum ones always had black spokes with polished outer rims. Alex at Can Am Cars is an old friend, I've known him since he was a teenager hanging around my shop learning all he could.
@HotRodHoarder4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info Bryan. I did a little bit of research on them, but didn't find a bunch of info. I definitely appreciate it. I'd love to go back and visit Can Am Cars again someday...maybe they'll work out a trade with me on these Damage three-spoke wheels. I'm sure they could put them to better use than me.

Hot Rod Hoarder, I can spend hours in their shop just looking at all the cool racing parts. From wings to wheels, parts cars and more. I love the engine room full of Offy, Cosworth, various IRL Olds, Nissan, and then more current Chevy and Cosworth engines. Keep up the great work on the videos.
@bryancohn94064 жыл бұрын
Hot Rod Hoarder I forgot one thing, the reason mag is rarely used in road racing wheels today is because they are so susceptible to corrosion from exposure to air let alone brake dust etc. For amateur racers and the like they require massive amounts of maintenance otherwise they deteriorate rapidly. Those Dymags you have would never be used in any competition today, at least not to my knowledge. I think the wheels you see on restored Indy Roadsters are repos in aluminum. The last mag wheels I used were a brand called Technomagniso, beautiful Italian made small open wheel race car wheels that date to the 90’s. Today you’ll find racers using 20, even 30 year old aluminum wheels but I haven’t seen a Techno, which were the rage, since the early 2000’s. Someone will want your Dymags as they are really cool looking wheels, just not for track use. Static display, bar table, stuff and like that.
