I really like how you explain the loaded brush technique. The way you explain it and show its execution actually makes sense. The way you lay it down reminds me a lot of shading with a graphite pencil. Awesome video man.

The Hobby Cheating series is always good, but this was the first time I really felt like I had put in a cheat code! Just used this technique to paint the black trench coat of my GSC Primus, I used basic Vallejo Black, Akhlelian Green (which is actually a blue IMO) and Pallid Wych Flesh as the highlight. Akhelian Green is the colour I'm using for the genestealer arms and PWF is my highlight for the skin - it all comes together nicely.

As always, amazing video. I've yet to have a go with loaded brush blending, but I shall be soon when I get one to my Rune Priest, just got some other characters to do before getting to him. Thanks for all the hard work you put in to your videos, they are excellent.

The reflective material (ie your gloss black) is darker because its reflections will be more localized. That means that if you have a light source bouncing on it, it will reflect in only one direction. If your eye is on that direction then yes you will see its full intensity, but if your eye is not on that exact spot then you'll see nothing. A matt surface will on the contrary reflect the light in all directions, meaning that you don't need to be on an precise spot to see it, but you will see a fraction of it. I don't know if that's clear enough or if that comment will be read at all, given that this is an old video 😅
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
It will be read, they are all read. :) - And yes, I actually talk about this in a recent video in more detail as to the difuse nature of light over different surfaces.

How would you recommend painting the black leather corset of a Slaanesh daemonette, the technique you have presented here seems difficult to implement with a non flat surface, doesn't it? I know I must be annoying going through all your years old stuff asking stupid questions, but I appeal to your patience :)
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
So with those kind of corsets, you want to highlight them more toward the bottom where they flare out. Same trick as here, but with some quite minor highlights in those areas.

Aah Vince, I am entering my first competition in a few months! And I was really struggling with a Slaanesh model with a whole bunch of leather bits and wondering what I was going to do about that, and here we are! Do you reckon this would be an appropriate technique for some small areas of a competition fig? If you were doing it for competition, would you change anything? And lastly, do you have a link to where you get your baking paper for the wet pallete, because those little crosses look neat, lol Thanks again and love your work, Michael
@battspaints2 жыл бұрын
Just saw in another comment that it's Reynolds baking paper - I'll check it out and see if I can get it in Aus 😂
@VinceVenturella2 жыл бұрын
I see you found the answer, sure, this could work for competition, but you would want to refine it and add some tonal variation with some color, usually blues.

Just good old fashioned reynolds baking paper (non-wax)
@brianm70346 жыл бұрын
Ok, I watched this a couple of times. This is probably a dumb question but it's making my brain hurt trying to figure out the answer. Prior to highlighting, when you are mapping out where to highlight, is your placement of the highlights dependent to where the material is taunt or are they based on the degree of the desired light source of the figure (say 45 degrees to the front of the figure) or both? Basically, do you highlight where tight or just pick out reflection points?
@VinceVenturella6 жыл бұрын
The answer is where the light would fall basically. Sometimes this will map to where it's tight. However, if you look at the side of the leg, I looked at the bunching fabric where it was clumped and had pushed out. That would catch more light. Now sometimes, where the fabric is tight, that can also be a highlight point and aesthetically, we are attracted to that as if it's thin, then it has a sheen where skin shows through. Hope that helps.

Vince Venturella yes thank you, that does help.

So how does varnishing with dullcote affect the glossy look?
@VinceVenturella6 жыл бұрын
Doesn't change much, because we are using all matte paints to fake the effect except for the shadow gloss black. So the dull cote tends to hit the lower and recesses less anyway (I don't tend to varnish my models much anyway, doesn't tend to e necessary) but it will diminish the gloss to a satin, which can preserve the dark blackness but cut some of the brighter shine and bring it in-line.

great videos but why is the bass so strong in the intro and outro :(
@TheRunesmythe6 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, "Fifty Shades of Gray: Dark Elf Edition"... sorry, bad joke. Honestly, with that first layer of color, I wasn't sold on the look (in fact I was thinking that's not going to look black at all anymore) but with the subsequent steps it started working more and more for me. As for why a glossy surface looks darker, I would guess it has something to do with a lot of the reflected light being concentrated in a few areas; those concentrated areas make it seem like they're the only points of light on the object, thus tricking your eye and brain into seeing the rest as being much darker in comparison (again, that's a guess).
@VinceVenturella6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it has to come together with the darker blacks and have the reflected light. We don't even recognize how little black there is in the "black" items around us, but we see them as black. :)

Can you zoom in some more? This is wasted on me. Can't see what's going on. Especially something like this where you're trying to demonstrate highlights on black I really think you need to zoom in way more.
@dmstretch66345 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get this with a few of his videos tbh. it's just the one angle and zoom the whole time, no change or close up to show various detail etc.
