I agree that verticality is indeed great for basing, since most things around the world and especially in nature are not flat. The challenge I face is that the primary game I play is rank and flank one. When making bases for singel models I have the same amount of freedom as skirmish games have, but creating bases for rank and file units, is much much harder to have nice looking verticality. If you would ever make a video concerning that topic, I would be very grateful!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 жыл бұрын
Well, so I did the same thing back in R&F days, basically, I would pick a few bases, especially command models, and create some slight verticality. It makes the unit actually seem more real, because then the people are of varying "heights"

I recommend silicon tipped brushes (sculting brushes) or sculpting tools, when working with texture paint. cheap alternatives are coffee stirrers, bbq skewers, and toothpicks. Superglue + cellulose based materials: I experienced exothermic reactions when using superglue and cork or cotton. It can create toxic fumes. This might be brand related, but I recommend craft glue or PVA glue for these types of material Regarding vegetation: Mars in 40k was terraformed. So...your point is up for debate. (IRL, you're right. Regarding the game lore, ehh...not so much)
@BrickworksDK
@BrickworksDK 4 жыл бұрын
As I recall, wasn't all terraforming undone during the Heresy, leaving Mars as an irradiated wasteland?

@@BrickworksDK It was undone WAY, WAY before the Heresy, before even the Mechanicum came to prominance on Mars. The atmosphere desipated in the centuries following the war with the Men Of Iron, as no-one remembered how to fix the terraforming machinery, and if they did, they'd be too busy fighting off either other techno-barbarians, or any of the rogue semi-sentient nasties left over from before the previously mentioned war.

Theres quite a few ways to do this. I like to alternate between Martian Ironearth and Ironcrust, along with with adding bits of metal from GW's basing kits. I try to avoid the cork, where i can.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, nothing wrong with cork, it's good to have verticality, you just can't end on cork, as you see here, it's very covered up and integrated to just be a slight elevation change in the ground.

Every time I have a project you always come through with a helpful tutorial before I start. Get out of my head Vince... Question though. For something like Chainrasp hordes that use the slotted bases, how would I do something like this? Do I cut them off and just glue them to the finished bases? (They don’t have much surface area). Do I gouge out a slot for them? Do I put the models in as all of this is drying and paint it all at once?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
So I answered during the show, but hopefully that helps, the key is remove if you have enough surface area without it, or cut way down small to a tiny slot if you want to keep it because it's necessary.

How would you modify a base like this for a smaller size base such as a 25mm? it seems like it would be difficult to put all those different products on a small base .
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 жыл бұрын
So I would just use a little less on each base, but all the same across the bases (think of like splitting up the landscape, you wouldn't have all of this on every base, but if taken as a whole you would.

Get some chipping medium if you’re doing death guard you’ll want em nice and rusty. Get some sanding sticks off amazon they’ll help you out a lot with mold lines and rough areas. Also zenithal highlight! It’s easy to get those shadows and highlights easier that way. Hope you have fun in the hobby!

Yeah, it's tough, basically, focus on your basics, understanding your paints and brush control. You will advance quickly in the beginning if you follow tutorials, the knowledge is all out there. Learn how to turn your paint smooth, what colors cover well and what doesn't how to control your brush and how to do things like glaze. Beyond that, there is plenty to learn, but the key is don't worry about it all at once. Just paint, have some successes, have some failures and most importantly, just keep learning, it's a wonderful journey.

The one tip I wish I knew from the beginning is that our paints are transparent. Don't fight it, embrace it! Watch some other of Vince's tutorials and you'll get an idea. Maybe start with the video on glazing.
