Ok six and 1/2 in and I must say....The work you just executed is no different from the work of a material handler or any tenured employee who knows what they are doing! Hesitation is the enemy and most often hesitation arises from not knowing or not having faith in what you are doing. The synergy of both airbrush and brushwork in your strategy was awesome. It just made me realize how much of my "problem" is just a lack of faith in strategy and/or knowledge. Six and 1/2 hours is an effort in application, but we do it everyday at work. The time it takes (especially in the learning curve) is ok, because I am learning strategy and gaining faith in the process. Thank you for the motivation and realization Vince! So glad I was patient in watching this until it popped up after the last Warhammer Weekly!

They look fine on the tabletop, more than that they look great. Sometimes a horde painted nicely to a well thought out plan impresses more than one or two stunningly glazed art pieces that you can't play with till the other 90 models in the army somehow get finished. Great vid, If I finished that in 240 hours I'd be happy and proud, and playing with them

If so what were the colors you used? Thanks and I love your work!

Thank you, always happy to help. So if you can find the all in one Master Airbrush kit on Amazon, that's where you start, the one with the gravity fed G-22 or G23 There are lot sof different versions of the bundle now, but it comes at minimum with a tank, a hose and a cheap, starter airbrush. If you ever break that, who cares, you can replace it for about $20, perfect for learning and doing basic work and once you have the confidence, you can make an upgrade into something that will last :)

Hi Vince, liked the video. I have a question if you don't mind. I'm new to the hobby so I've been watching a lot of mini painters here on KZbin and one thing I've noticed is that a lot seem to swear by using zenithal highlighting but an equal number of them don't seem to use it at all. To be honest I can't tell the difference in the finished minis between the painters who've used a zenithal highlight and those who haven't. Why do you prefer it and am I short changing myself learning wise if I skip that process? Thank you.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
My answer is that it's such a powerful tool, especially for new people. It shows you the level of contrast and where the highlighting should be. Painters who are very experienced will sometimes work from a single color either because a) they have been painting a long time and they have gotten used to it or b) they know really well where the lights are going to go without any additional guide. My advice from what I do and what I know many other top painters do is to do the zenithal, it can just make things so much easier especially as you're learning. Hope that helps.

I learned in my first army paint project, that for me (and note those operative words. ymmv) doing a few models at a time in an army up to nearly done is more demoralizing than it is encouraging. Looking at that pile of half done mini's nearly broke me, when those first 18 looked so good. Of course it doesn't help that I was working on a box game, so I could see all the mini's in one go. Ever since, I work by squads, and generally will only do a part of the overall plan on that squad, before doing that same thing on the next squad. Once I finish all the squads, I'll go through on the next step. For example, on the game I'm nearly done painting, I'm working on the last squad's bases, and then I'll start over and do a final check on each squad's skin, cleaning up, and highlighting as needed. It's tedious, but it works better for me than your method. This isn't to say your method is wrong. It works for you, so that's amazing! It doesn't work for me, and maybe someone else might need to hear that. That said, congrats on another painted army!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, I think that is more than fine and fair. IN the end, we each have to find our own ways. If it's working for you, and you are getting stuff painted, then it's the right answer. :)

I'd call it a success. Even though you didn't hit the mark, that's a ton to get done in 24 hours. Did you clean mold lines or did that one Saurus you were working on just get missed? My OCD was killing me seeing it on there. This inspired to get some paint on my 40 converted marauders so thanks for that.

I think this is a failure at painting an army in 24 hours. In the grand scheme of army creation, going from in-the-box, to fully painted and based result, its always going to take alot more than 24 hours. Its just the nature of the beast, when you're trying to get something decently painted, and ready to be played, while going through the ENTIRE process. However, for the quality you put out on these, within that 24 hours - THAT was a tremendous amount of work, and that should definitely be applauded and enjoyed. I love when you do these types of videos, because it shows the distinct differences in painting a thing to a high quality, and simply painting an army to a decent quality, and getting out on the table. As always, amazing work Vince!!! What i would like to know, is not how fast you can paint an army, but from start (in the box) to finished (fully painted and based), how many hours it takes you to paint an army to this quality. Why? Because it'll set a bar that we can all strive for.

Hey Vince, I recently came across the GSW candy paints. I know your "to review" waiting list is really long, I wondered if they might be on it? Watching you airbrush on the contrast paints at 3:30, it looks like the GSW candies are cheaper, but the range is far more limited.

I've been trying to use FW inks but always have to varnish afterwards to stop them from rubbing off. You seem to interchangeability with normal paints throughout the process and then just varnish at the end. Normally its not a big deal, but speed painting wise that extra varnish takes a good chunk of time. How are you able to work around that?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
So a few things, my basement is very, very dry, so everything sets quickly, that could be part of it, both the inks and the varnish dry quickly, but in general, you only need to give an airbrush layer of varnish about 10 minutes, so it generally doesn't take that much time away even if you are frequently varnishing.

This really makes me feel ashamed of every blood bowl team I have unpainted, or every warband. I mean, I haven't played with those 2 games in ages because I want to have my minis painted, and I only need to paint them to a certain standard to do that, but I keep struggling to get into this mentality. Man, thank you, really, is easier for me when I see people that can paint at your level, doing something like this, with an entirely different approach and still make the minis on the table look badass as they fight.

Is there any generic "rule" for the wash/shade color (before drybrushing and inks)? If I want to paint blue model (for example ultramarine) should I use blue wash?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Not really, there are some no-goes, but there are a wide range of colors that will work. Space Marines are a funny example because they are one of the figures that takes washes the worst. The key with washes and their effectiveness is the more large flat areas a model has, he less the wash will be effective and a Space Marine is a lot of big flat panels. Now, as to colors, here are some tips. in general, you can always use the darker version of that color (for example, - Ultramarine, you can use the dark blue wash, no issue there), you can also use something like Agrax quite freely as it is sort of black/brown and quite weak. What you want to avoid is over using Nuln, the more pure black will really darken and stain many brighter colors. I hope that all helps.

The greatest Obstacle i always face, and i still haven´t found a satisfying way to overcome it, is coming up with a color scheme for my projects. My KO for example, i know that i want Turquoise armor and then i try to come up with contrasting colors for the different parts. "Do i use regular brown leather, do i paint it dark grey, how does it look on Thunderers, is it to much on Arkanaut Company" etc etc. And i end up not painting at all. its kinda frustrating being in that hole and not be able to dig myself out of it.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 жыл бұрын
So I will give ou some tips here. 1) It doesn't matter. Seriously, you can use any or all of those neutral colors and it literally doesn't matter. All of those neutral tones don't interact with the color scheme. 2) A test model is always fine, just lay down some colors and go, it's one model, what's the worst case? You prime over it and try again, you can paint the same model 20 times with little issue. 3) Look at other people who have painted it. Google the things you're painting and look at how others have done it, then steal that scheme. No shame or shade, there is no original color scheme in a hobby of hundreds of thousands of people. :) 4) A color wheel is your friend. Start with the color you like, then just select a split complimentary scheme (3 actual hues), then the rest is all the neutral tones. Easy peasy. Hope that all helps.

@VinceVenturella

So there are a few options, for these guys, I just slid my slippers under each foot, flat side toward the base and popped them off. If you absolutely can't get them off, you can also just trim the sides off the base, leaving only the flat top and then place that whole thing on a new round and put some paste/grit over the line. Hope that all helps.

Is it possible to paint a 2k Khorne army in this span of time? Because tis is amazing :D
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
It would depend on the Khorne army. If it was mostly the simpler models, it could be done. If it was lots of blood warriors and the more ornate sculpts, it just wouldn't be possible I suspect, the models have too much fine detail that chews up time.

Hi VinceV, Thanks for this great video. I've learned a bunch of tricks that I'll try to keep in my for my future projects! I had a question: why don't you use wooden stick as shown here: massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2010/02/tutorial-painting-5-miniatures-all-at.html ? When it comes to paint identical models (kudos to the 50 idiots in the back), this technique allows you to reproduce the exact same gesture on 5 minis at once, by simply sliding the stick. Using this (with an airbrush or brush) is a huge speed up to me. Cheers

It's not comfortable is the short answer. You want something you are holding when painting to be roughly the shape of your hand at rest, helps avoid muscle stress and cramps. IMportant when you are trying to power through 24 hours of work. :)
