You mention being 4 mins in and not putting paint down, thats one of the reasons I keep coming back to your videos. Anyone can paint a tutorial. But I love listening to the theory and the 'whys'. Its that background, information, reasons why and concepts that give me the knowledge to be a better painter. Otherwise its just paint by numbers, which is what everyone else does. Keep it up!

On wing/feather shapes like that, I like to introduce a secondary highlight out towards the tips, just before the darkest shadows. I find it accentuates the shape and makes the metal more believable.

Even the "dark side" would have reflections, they would just end up being the mid-tones of the lit side, take a look at putty and paint and you'll see some great references.

I can't believe I've only just found your channel! great tutorial and so relaxing to watch and listen to! you have a real knack for NMM! I have 2 questions though! what mini is that? it's beautiful! Second question is, have you much experience with painting a NMM red at all?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
It's the Angel Knight from Kabuli miniatures. They make a great line of minis. I have played around with Red NMM a fair amount, it's a great deal tougher than gold or silver, as when mixed, it tends to go pink. So the key is to use layers of ivory (or similar warm white, bone, etc.) and then glaze red over the top in successively thinner glazes for your highlights. Your shadows need to usually go into a brown/purple to contrast.

Hello Vince, Another great video and something I will definitely give a try as I rely too much on Metal metallics currently. Just a question that I have as I am working to improve my painting skills at the same time trying to get models on the table, how do you balance quality with quantity? I am a project manager by trade and time management and efficiency are something I excel in with job functions, I can even teach others how to do their jobs more efficiently however I would like to find out from you and possibly the community how they balance their hobby time to get units on the table and paint to a higher standard.. Currently I just finished the first 1000 points for my 2nd Age of Sigmar army and it took me about 4 months painting to my current table top standard which is pretty good for my local area. I want to improve my painting standard by adding more tricks and I enjoy your videos as they always give me great ideas but I can't imagine painting an entire army using techniques such as NMM without probably doubling my painting time per model and any advice would be appreciated.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
So there are a few tips I would give. First, paint more and more and more. The more you paint, the more you will internalize tricks and tips - as long as you are deliberate and try little new things with each unit. Don't try everything new at once, just one new trick per model group, unit, etc. SLowly, you internalize those things and become quite fast at delivering higher quality product. What you see here would be nearly impossible to replicate over a reasonably sized army (though possible for something like a skirmish force). The model you saw here is something I am doing for competition and will probably spend more than 100 hours on total - not scalable for an army in any world. So the key with balancing the two is to keep doing just that - spend the amount of time you feel comfortable with. Just try some new things and improve your brush control and techniques. Make a list of the things you would like to try new, improve that you have been working on, and continue to perfect. Then look at your models and before you put paint to mini, think about what of those items you could deploy with that unit. Think of what opportunities the unit gives you to improve and go from there. One final note, NMM is generally good for single models, display quality or competition pieces. It's a really good technique to practice as all miniature painting is a study of how light interacts with surfaces, and NMM is a GREAT way to practice and internalize that understanding. That being said, it's often not great across an entire force because it doesn't pop as much without strong lighting, so TMM often works better for a full force, you just want to make sure you are applying NMM shading and highlighting techniques to your TMM (which I have several videos on as well). Hope all that helps.
@caseyfrechette
@caseyfrechette 3 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to me that you chose the satin range for this rather than matte colors and I am curious about the intention of that choice and the thought process behind it. I have only tried a few NMM techniques but my own thinking about metallics after watching all your videos and many other painters' tutorials on NMM/TMM at large is that I want a bit of satin in my shadows but for the highlights to be matte. The peanut butter glaze throws satin over the whole thing and maybe it ties it together better that way, I am not really sure if that finish contrast I like to aim for actually has a convincing effect in the case of gold or if something like your own technique works better. I would love to hear your thoughts on finish and finish contrast in gold NMM.

Any chance you could share the finished thing? I have never done NMM. To me, the challenge, in addition to the actual painting technique, is defining where to place the "reflective" part, the highlight. It seems kind of intuitive for surfaces like blade edges, and this video makes it kind of obvious (after you explain it!) for that particular shape. Would it be the part that you would normally highlight in a non-NMM scenario? Hence my interest to see how you approached each of those black and white spots, with their many different shapes and positions.

You want to lay down a few smooth coats of matte or better gloss varnish over the affected area and even everything out. Then lay your paint over top. Varnish is great for foxing those little bumps and inconsistencies.

Hi Vince, as always thx for your great tutorials. I have a request: Could you please write down the colours (and range) you use in the description in the future? Everytime i try to learn your technics i try to buy exactly the same colours you mention. Sometimes it is easy, beacause you show them and it is easy to read the names. But in this tutorial you just mention the names... And now i am searching for these colours...And it would really help if you write down the figure you use too. (Because it is easier to learn the technic if i can use the same figure you do) Thx Vince and have a nice day.

I have to agree with most of the comments here. You make some great tutorials that help to inspire an average painter like myself to work hard at improving their skills. Your channel got me to start painting some bones stuff for the D&D game I play in and start an AoS army. I know you use a lot of different paints for different things but is there 1 brand you would recommend if I was going to buy a single brand?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
For painters that are starting off, I generally recommend Vallejo Game Air, it's good for both airbrush and brush painting and great for layering and similar techniques. The Scale 75 is great and their fantasy & games lines are awesome, but they do suit a particular painting style, namely thinner layers and glazes.

What would be the best way to practice this? I don’t want to ruin a model trying it out for the first time, would taking an old blank base work fine to get the general hang of it until I am happy with the results or should I just bite the bullet and do it on a model?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 жыл бұрын
My best advice is to lose the idea you can ruin a model. When you are starting a more difficult technique like this, it will not work out perfectly, it may not even be good. That is okay. More complex techniques like this just mean you have to do them a lot. My best advice is just pick some figures that are stand-alone so they don't have to fit with an army and see what you can do. THe model wouldn't be perfect without it (no model we paint ever is) so we have to accept that there will be bumps on the road to improvement. :)

Any Idea of what am I doing wrong? thx!

The paint is too thin and you still have too much water. If you can see a physical droplet, you have too much liquid still (sometimes it takes multiple dabs). You may want to thin less as well, it should still have some effect, though minimal.

I could watch 500 hours of how to paint, but it doesn't click for me until randomly I get bored one day and I just sit down and all of a sudden I am doing NMM steel even though i've only watched videos on gold.

@@VinceVenturella thanks for all the videos, you rock! and I like how even though you can do NMM easily, you still keep pushing the limits of TMM! When I found your recipe using the GSW metal pigments I couldn't stop painting gold TMM!

I saw that a lot in the videos, so you are probably going to be hearing that echo often. :)
