Hiya Vince, just wanted to let you know that after watching this video this morning I subscribed to your channel. I first started painting miniatures back in 1979-1980 (yeah I'm old) when pen and paper D&D burst onto the gaming scene. Back then most if not all fantasy miniatures were made out of lead or pewter by companies like Ral Partha, Grenadier etc..and testors enamel hobby paints were pretty much the available standard. I had bought myself a "how to" book by renowned diorama builder of the time, Sheperd Paine and that was pretty much how I learned. Not long after, companies like GW came along and the miniature painting hobby took off (still pre home PC's and internet). I haven't painted miniatures for years now, life, family, work had just taken up too much of my time. But as I approach my retirement years I'm considering picking it up again and I wanted to thank you for passing on your advice and knowledge to all of us. I look forward to putting into practice what you suggest and, to say the least, I wish I did know back then when I was a kid, the things I'm learning now about this fun and rewarding hobby. Stay healthy and God bless.

Thanks for validation of my wanting an airbrush so early. Over the past few months I’ve gotten back in to mini painting after a hiatus of nearly two decades. This was thanks to a 3D resin printer. I call it, “Hobby Creep” (where one hobby pushes you into another related or complimentary hobby.) My Wife got me an airbrush setup as a Yule gift. She didn’t understand why I was wanting one when I had just started painting again. I hade her watch a few vids on youtube to sell the reason.

+1 for getting an airbrush, I pretty much only use mine for priming and varnishes. But I've never over primed with stynylrez or frosted a mini by airbrushing varnish. Likewise here in the PNW where it rains 40% of the year its nice to just sit down fire up the compressor prime what I need and get to work. Before that I had to rush to get everything assembled and primed by like September to last til March.

I'm a beginner and just purchased an Artis Opus drybrush and palette. It's amazing. I was using makeup brushes before and the difference is something you'd have to experience. If washes are liquid talent, perhaps the Artis Opus drybrush is dry talent. Sure, you don't need one as a beginner, but I'd put this up there with the airbrush, one of which I also recently purchased (Badger Patriot 105). Great video!

I would to comment as someone new to the hobby. I jumped on board with indomitus so been at this just over 6 months. 1) get an air brush, my friend bought me one for my birthday in December, I would have never done it myself. My first army was Necrons using the guide that Torvan put out. Base coating those suckers with vellaho metal color took me ages by brush, I just finished basing 20 warriors with the air brush in 30mins. They aren't that expensive for the cheap ones particularly given the amount of money you will spend (and you will ). So get an airbrush. 2. Vellaho metal color is amazing use it. 3. Don't be like me a buy fancy brushes. You will either 1 never use them as you are afraid you'll fuck them up or 2 you will fuck them up. 4. Get some brush soap. 5. Have fun and take your time.

What I would add to useful tools is small little metal painttrays (you can get them cheap off of ebay for example), cause you can use them instead of a big dry palette, to mix airbrush colors and so on. Also those small plastic bottles with a nozzle. I use that to clean the airbrush, wet the wet palette while on the table or even add water to paint, like when i use my small metal tray and make something very thin and need more water than just from the brush.

Great tutorial! One thing I would add is: don't buy big amounts of anything at first. Even if it seems like a better deal, you are more likely to end up with a product you'll hate and/or never use again so just try a couple different ones in small amounts. That applies to paints as well. I bought a set of Vallejo paints right at the start and while it wasn't necessarily an entirely bad idea as it got me started, I haven't even used up half of the paint before I switched to a different brand because I found them so difficult to work with (poor coverage and horrible for mixing your own colors).

Just a couple of things that I would add... 1) When it comes to primers, DON"T buy any of the Tamiya stuff. You'll see it all over the place in hobby shops, but don't be tempted. It lays down an INCREDIBLY smooth finish (which is great), but it's made for lacquers and enamels. I found out the hard way that it's hydrophobic for most acrylic paints. So, your paint will literally bead up on top of it. 2) I tested every kind of rattle-can primer I could get my hands on: Army Painter, Citadel, Dupli-Color, Krylon and Rustoleum. Out of all of them, Citadel was the only one that worked with all of the various paints that I tested. Army Painter was fine with everything, except the Vallejo Metal Colors. They beaded up an insane amount. As far as the non-hobby paints, Krylon worked well. I got consistent application with all of the various paints. But... It's also INCREDIBLY thick. One coat of ANY of the non-hobby primers was equivalent to about 4 coats of Citadel / Army Painter. So if you want to preserve detail, just go with the Citadel. It does what you want / need it to do and it did it the way you would expect it to. Here's my rankings: 1) Citadel 2) Army Painter (if you don't plan on using Vallejo Metal Color and you aren't going to zenithal - no real grey color) 3) Krylon (if you aren't worried about preserving detail) 4) Dupli-Color / Rustoleum Hope that helps!

As a thought for using sub assemblies early on and something too consider for times too use them. Would be when the paint scheme has a great deal of contrast too the army. for example imperial fists, doing the weapons separate can save you a bit of heartache avoiding painting black around yellow while figuring out brush control.

Mr. Venturella, this is brilliant video. It’s filled with great collected experience, advice and tips. I love everything you covered. One part that I hope you will go into in the second part is “what’s before the sprue?” for example, what are some good minis to start with? Individuals, small group or skirmish game models, board game minis, and also whether to avoid or not avoid the siren song call of buying an entire army on day one. :D I’d love to hear your advice on this perhaps in part 2 or a separate video.

If you do use sand or dirt a good idea is to bake it at about 250 degrees for an hour or two to kill off any bacteria (otherwise you minis could start to smell as the bacteria dies). Also you can totally zenithal with a spray can, but I'm 100% behind you with the usefulness of an airbrush!

Got a comment! Great video, really good. I know you choose what to put in and leave out, but I wanted to offer you left out some stuff you might have considered including. Short version is I think you missed important stuff. i'm buy now means an expert but wanted to add some to this. 1st. Spell out you are doing figs for gaming and not presentation. I think this is a very important , you are going after two very different end products that have two different uses. Gaming figs will get beat up: picked up with pizza fingers, fall off tables, have dice slam into them, etc. They need to be built TOUGH! Also with gaming figs you'll paint 10s, 100s, maybe 1000s! I think mentioning this will help peeps understand what how and why you use different techniques. 2nd. Should talk about place, light, and a work surface. Need a pretty much permanent place to set up with a good light source (and while hard natural light is the best). You also need a work surface you can cut, spill paint on, etc. And you need it to save whatever your work surface is. 3rd. Start by washing your minis! You skipped this and it's super important! Wash them with dish soap, use a toothbrush, rinse them big time, then let dry. Great video! Keep up the good work of supporting the rest of us!!!!!

Such a great encapsulation Vince! I really enjoy the little bumpers and music in between the chapter! My only comment would be when you do your talking head segment, your monitor reflects off of your glasses and creates distracting glare. This is a stupid nitpick, but its all I’ve got. Great vid as always, hopefully new people see this early in their hobby journey.

Great video, super useful... for cheap handles I'm using empty glass deodorant roller bottles, the ones I'm using are from a brand (Nivea men) that makes them ergonomically shaped, so they are super nice to hold... at least here in Germany you can get them in Lidl for 1 Euro or something like that
@alexanderpadberg5433 жыл бұрын
What do you use to stick the model to the bottle though? Also being from Germany, Blu Tack is just not a thing here, is it? So what to use and where to get it?
@kaikropp32543 жыл бұрын
I use something similar to blue tack from Uhu called Patafix... I picked it up in Real... but I find it to be less sticky then blue tack

As an alternative to the glue recommendations, I would like to Keep It Simple, Stupid by strongly suggesting newbies use only liquid plastic glue/cement, and only buying plastic models for as long as possible. Pewter and resin are at least twice as finicky as plastic, and so is CA glue if it's any kind of thick. Also, practice dry fitting EVERYTHING before beginning the glue process. Ideally the surfaces are made to be flush or you've got some cutting and filing to do which is a whole other skill. If they're mostly flush, then just be generous with the glue and they'll meld together anyway with some pushing. Sure, CA will glue everything, but that includes fingers, tools, and tables; the fumes are noxious; and if you don't use it within a couple months it will harden in the bottle, wasting your money (so buy small bottles when you do, even if it is more expensive per ounce). Plastic glue bonding time is much more generous for modification, it barely sticks to skin, and the bond is solid if done right. The only drawbacks to plastic glue are: - Learning how to deal with accidentally touching the melted plastic which creates strings. - Accidentally bending or moving a part that hasn't set yet. - Figuring how much to use, not too much nor too little. The way I've mastered using plastic glue: I'll dry fit twice checking from all angles, wet one piece, then the other, give them 5-10 seconds to dry and gel up, press together, leave for a minute. Then apply a little more pressure. If there's some melted plastic oozing out, I won't apply more pressure again. If there's a distinct gap (there almost always is), I'll apply a little more glue in there after the first minute and press.
@VinceVenturella3 жыл бұрын
It's a good point, but I think people are often scared by plastic glue when they start out, so I wanted to present both options, as they are probably more familiar with super glue as a concept, so it's a shorter leap. :)

For the priming, I prime in my shadow and zeni in my main/highlight ie, i wanted to do a bunch of lizard folk in blue and green Blue based, green Zeni and a few touch ups post priming and I was already on to details and washing Also I learned too late that based should be done with meh brushes, and then details and touch ups and fine work with the nice brushes I killed a few from over use :( A well sized, properly loaded brush for base coats, especial when painting 5-10 at a time, will give you amazing mileage None the less, thank for the video!

great video, thank you Vince, really. I hope you will make more of these (yes I know there is your library of other vids , but still, a fresh new look could never hurt) as for the revell glue; a warning about the needle clogging up could be useful, it not always cleanable by holding a lighter against the sides/ends, and the needle is so thin that you cant clean it with a paperclip.
@VinceVenturella3 жыл бұрын
More to come and you're right, it can be a challenge, you have to use a really long thin needle.

I have been painting minis since 1982. Back then, all I had to work with was Testor's plastic model paint. I don't get to paint everyday. If I am VERY lucky maybe once a month but after 40 years I can put a halfway respectable mini on the table. Still, I love these beginner videos. No, I don't still use Testor's. 🤣

I know this is an older video, but as someone who is COMPLETELY new to the hobbying scene, thank you for making it. I already understand more than I could have ever hoped to thanks to this tutorial. If I may ask a question; I'm planning to build Necrons as my first army, but with a custom color scheme. Primary black, with orange accents, and a ghostly, sickly white for the gauss tech that would normally be green. My initial idea was to just prime black and paint on the orange and white details, but based on your video that would be a BAD plan. Do you have a video, or any suggestions, about how I should do this? Thanks!
@VinceVenturella6 ай бұрын
First, thank you! Glad it's helpful, I have a full beginner paint playlist, so check that out for sure. Now, onto your specific question. The white is the problem, I have a video in the standard playlist about experimenting with panel lining with white, its difficult, ultimately, I do think starting black would be perfectly fine idea. Then with the orange, you will want to cover the area of the those details by brush with an ivory or bone, something with good coverage, then go orange over the top of that. As to the white recesses, I would recommend a color, white just won't really sell, a color would. Something like a ghostly blue will look good with the orange, the tricks in this video would be used, you would just switch it to blue instead of the pink you see me using here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/omHRXquCmbuLars&pp=gAQBiAQB

Hey Vince, I have been painting for maybe 3 years seriously and one thing I STILL struggle with is paint consistency or essentially how thin to actually make the paints on my wet palate. I see people wet blend and when I try my paint dries way too fast because of how thin it is. It can be a frustrating experience, especially since the wet palate seems to almost auto-thin my paints for me if I spread them out on the palate at all. Can you cover this in your follow up video or another video soon? I know it seems silly but its just frustrating for me at least. We hear "thin your paints" constantly but that seems to lock me out of some other techniques and makes it take al to longer to get solid opacity.
@shadergod3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I got back into the hobby a little less than a year ago. As part of the primer test that I mentioned above, I also tested all of the paints that I'd planned on using for a test squad of Imperial Guard infantry. This is what I could determine. (I also use a wet palette.) It REALLY depends on the paint brand. Reaper Master Series required NO thinning on the palette. It was think enough already that adding any water to it turned it into a wash. GW Mephiston Red, Vallejo Model Color and Vallejo Game Color seemed to work best for layering at a 1:1 consistency of paint/water (1 drop to 1 drop). The minimum thinning to get a nice flow and not have to worry about brush strokes. They'll still be fairly transparent, but that's what "two thin coats" are for. Also (this is pretty standard), don't try to thin your metallics. I tried multiple combinations of water and flow improver. Nothing really worked. Hope that helps!
@MrStatistx3 жыл бұрын
@@shadergod there is a vallejo metallic medium, that could work for metal thinning, BUT I think it's better to just get a good metalic color that doesn't need thinning (and with that I mean vallejo metal color, which is the best)
@Winterydee3 жыл бұрын
If you find that your paints are drying to fast on your brush, mini or even in a wet palette I would suggest that you use an additive instead of water. Adding a Medium (Glaze, Matte or other type) will thin the paint however will not evaporate nearly as fast as the water would. If you're still having issues with your paint still drying faster than you would like then use some Retarder. Also you could use Flow Aid for helping with consistency of your paint. It is just another additive medium. You can just put a few drops of these additives on your wet palette and slowly add them into a separate spot on your wet palette where you are mixing the paint that you are trying to work with. Just dip your brush in to the paint and then make a new spot on the palette you'll use to mix it on then dip your brush into the additive you would like to add in and mix that in to the mixing area. You can use multiple additives at the same time if you would like too as well.

@@MrStatistx Yeah, I used the metallic medium, too. I basically just wanted to see what was possible. I really got the impression that the metallic medium is for making regular paints into metallics. It REALLY doesn't work well with Vallejo Metal Colors. The nice thing is that if you're doing grey metals, you really don't need to thin the Vallejo Metal Color acrylics.
