Absolutely excellent video, by far the most detailed vs other channels that don't do such varied tests. It's helped me decide that, for me, it's going to be best to pick up the Citadel stuff. Thank you 👍

Crackin' video! (I'll get me coat). This is something else i haven't tried but it does seem to be a good way of getting away from the physical confines of a base and helps to make it look as if it was plucked out of a larger landscape (if you see what i mean). More like it puts the mini in context rather than being there to make the mini look pretty. Cracking job (sorry couldn't help myself).

Thanks Debs, love the bases. The blue is as you say pronounced ahh ree man and is named for the traitor legion Thousand Son's chief Librarian now sorcerer. Back to the cracking paint. I love the lava effect and I guess different base colours will work too. The way you achieve different snow and ice effects is brilliant! Who doesn't love a successful experiment? :>)

I'm learning how to use the Golden Crackle Paste. For basing it's a little tricky, but you get a lot of it and if you got a lot of bases it's way cheaper than using Citadel stuff. Working on desert/barren land for my Aeldari models currently. First experience was bad (too thin, forced it to dry), but trying the PVA (or just plain Elmer's glue here in the US) idea before I use the crackle paste/paint. Although I didn't prime my current test base :( We'll see I guess. Should be easy to strip and try again properly.

In the gw tv video using mordant earth, the crackle effect is really bad, the top isn't smooth and it just looks bad, how do you use it best to get that flat top with the colour really showing through?
@debsworthshobbystudio580
@debsworthshobbystudio580 4 жыл бұрын
The most important step is the really thick layer of PVA glue on top of your base coat. The more glue, the better! Also, the smoother you apply it, the flatter the top will be. Hope that helps 😊

One thing I'm wondering is how does it form around a miniatures feet? I've glued almost all my minis on their bases before painting them, and I don't think I can re-base them without ruining the base they're on. So I'll have to apply the texture paint around the feet of my plague marines and nurglings.
@debsworthshobbystudio580
@debsworthshobbystudio580 Жыл бұрын
It actually works pretty well. You just have to be a bit careful about not putting it on too thickly around the feet. My advice would be to use a texture tool to put the crackle paint around the edge of the base, and then use either a toothpick or something similar, to gently push the paint into the middle of the base, between the feet. It will dry with the same effect 😊 Hope this helps!
@Tyrnak_Fenrir
@Tyrnak_Fenrir Жыл бұрын
@@debsworthshobbystudio580 thanks for the quick response. Doesn't the texture tool have a smaller end to do more presise work around feet? I've used it with a snow texture (Valhallan Blizzard). I was just worried the cracks would make it obvious it was around the feet, like forming an obvious circle around each foot. But thanks for the reassurance.
@debsworthshobbystudio580
@debsworthshobbystudio580 Жыл бұрын
@@Tyrnak_Fenrir Yes! The citadel tool has a thin end that works well for this. If you make sure the colour underneath the crackle paint is all the way up to the feet, you shouldn't have too much of an issue with gaps. If I do, I hide them easily with a tiny splash of wash or a tuft. But not generally an issue 😊

What would happen if you buy glow in the dark powder to gloss on underneath then add crackle paint over the top? Would the cracks glow under black light torch? 🤔
@debsworthshobbystudio580
@debsworthshobbystudio580 9 ай бұрын
I've never used glow in the dark powder, but I believe it would work. The crackle paint would peel away from the gloss just like it does the PVA glue, so there's no reason why it wouldn't show through and glow!
@debsworthshobbystudio580
@debsworthshobbystudio580 9 ай бұрын
You would need to mix the powder with the glue/gloss, rather than just dust it on top

Thanks for the great suggestions. I know PVA glue would work but what I'm wondering is if the purple glue sticks that dry clear would have the same effect to hold the crackle paint to the base. I know that stuff holds the prints onto my Ender 3 Pro's glass bed with an iron grip.

What happens if you don't put PVA glue?
@debsworthshobbystudio580
@debsworthshobbystudio580 3 жыл бұрын
When the crackle paint starts to dry, it pulls up from the base. Without PVA glue, it can pull up the primer/base colour as well. I plan on doing another video on crackle paint soon, so I'll show an example of what happens!

from what i can see from the fine art people the crackle-pattern depends on how you apply the paint? Looks like Voodoo to me to be honest... edit: i could see that being true because all of your test bases have the same pattern on the outside :)
@debsworthshobbystudio580
@debsworthshobbystudio580 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, yes, it is a bit like voodoo! The crackle effect very much depends on whether you add anything to the paint (ink or texture etc), and how thick you apply it!
@ratakaio3802

@@debsworthshobbystudio580 I never tried using crackle medium but from what i saw is that the pattern is not totally random you could try and add it with a criss cross pattern and see if it makes a difference. from what i saw you "dabed" it on the base... my friend ordered some crackle medium from schmincke maybe i can borrow some and try it out ^^
