This video is another example of sawmilling for our business, Hobby Hardwood, Alabama. We show how we mill logs, dry them and other things on our outdoor farm. We use our amazing fleet of hardware and tools, such as our custom New Holland Tractor, Wood-Mizer LT-70 sawmill, as well as our Cantek planers, Baker edgers, and SLR machines in action, operation, milling and while sawing logs to lumber. Very few sawmills are this fast, including Baker, Morgan, Harbor Freight, Cooks, Northern, Timber King, Norwood, Woodland, chainsaw mill, and Hudson. It’s not an Amish Sawmill, but the fastest and most modern band mill Wood-Mizer makes and produces the best lumber wood for wood working projects and our lumber business. We also showcase our Nyle Kilns and air drying lumber techniques. My buddy, Nathan Elliot, of Out of the Woods Sawmill, OTW, convinced me I needed to start filming our operation, so here goes. I'm getting so old I'm forgetting what I'm forgetting! Seriously though, unlike some "Spandex Sawmillers" we are sawing to feed our sawmill business and be recognized as the highest quality mill in Alabama, if into the country, so the techniques I show are not the same old "I just bought a sawmill and these are my first logs" these are "I do this everyday, and here's what works in real life for profit." These techniques work, some are easier than others, but they work.

When you’re finished milling a log, would you be so kind to show us the grain patterns in the end of the boards please. I enjoy watching your videos because you explain what you are doing. If their were 50 saw millers how many do you think would follow your way of cutting the wood, 25 or is that to high? I am with you on taking money away from meteorologist if they can’t predict better or do away with the job. You can look at your phone and tell what the weather is going to do almost as accurately as listening to the meteorologist. As far as athletes are concerned, I guess if you can do and get away with it, do it. Doctors, teachers, police officers they are the ones that should be paid athletes salaries. Crap I could go on for hours. You do a fantastic job explaining what you are doing and doing it.

No, 10% would probably be the right number. I've learned that years ago, lots of reasons. Simply put, only a very few are willing to adapt and they are the good ones. For example, my buddy, Nathan, from Out of the Woods KZbin fame, called me the other day and said he used my Cherry Video technique to saw a cherry log (he mentioned me in his video) and it was the best cherry boards he had ever made. That says a lot, because, he has been sawing for years, and knows what he is doing, but it takes that to really get the best of any technique. Some people can't sing, some people try to sing and and some people can really sing. Same thing with a sawmill.

Great video, I saw a lot of white oak in Louisiana. I try to chase perpendicular grain. Works for me. Wish we had more walnut. Pine white oak and cypress and cedar is pretty much what we saw. In episode 1 you stated "cut lumber with as little grain change as possible across the board's width". You demonstrated this in this episode, but you clarified with walnut/hardwood. Does this milling principle also apply to softwoods, such as pine?

Thats a very good question. The short answer is "yes" as grain change will always cause an imbalance during drying, and cause crook, bow and twist in the boards, no matter the species. It's the pure physics of how lumber dries, it dries at different amounts and directions based on the grain. In the real world, however, most pine and other softwood is used for relatively low grade or special purposes, so are sawn to maximize yield, not quality, or to isolate defects. However grain orientation is always forefront in the professional sawyers mind, it is just handled differently. For example, when sawing for 16 foot long baseboard, or for trim, then the sawmiller must compromise on sawing for "flatness" to insure there are no knots in the entire board, because 16 foot long baseboard can not be manufactured or sold with knots, it must be clear wood. In the case of sawing for studs or other dimensional lumber in pine or softwoods, if stress can not be addressed, then the the crook is always put into the exact 90 degree opposite plane as for high grade hardwood lumber. So boards are meant to bow, not crook, if they can't be sawn flat. This is an important and fundamental question and I will use this as the topic for a video. Thanks for commenting.

No, I had a few really bad pith split ones on this log, especially with the hollow on the other end and they went right to the burn pile. I generally have a habit of sawing all the boards, even the pith ones because every now and the pith will do odd things and I will get one board that doesn't turn out too bad and I can salvage it, kind of like a bonus board. Most times though the boards are just DOA.

Batting Average? When I played high school baseball, I was awarded the "Best Hitter" in the city award two years running, with 2.5 million people in the area and lots of school teams, that was pretty good, and got a couple college scholarships out of it. With Walnut, my batting overing is well into the high 90% rate, where I can predict what's in the log before I cut it. Not every log turns out the way I want it to, but since I have to pay for every log, any misses are unacceptable and I'll stomp to the dugout and throw my sawmill into the Gatorade jug. :)

Do you pretty much stick to 8' logs to standardize your pallets and kiln drying loads, or do you do various lengths?

90% is 8 foot long, which is what most furniture woodworkers want to buy. I do oak, ash and other "large table construction" wood up to 12 feet long.

To NHLA standards, hardwood scale 4/4 is cut to 1-1/8" and 8/4 is cut to 2-3/8" thick.
