For monsters, I created a Early level boss in the form of a Hobgoblin Warlock called Big Sister. Her patron being a Night hag named Grannma, and Grannma had a troll husband named Grannda. Big Sister was extremely unsettling.

Hobgoblins are my favorite low level baddy, the fact that they are intelligent and my favorite alignment, and they can be powerful enough to challenge mid level party is just amazing in my mind.

I just built a hobgoblin wizard for AL play and I’m so hype because these guys get to be that beautiful combination of Intelligence and Marshall Prowess. So I get to use a halberd and wear light armor while still being an ultra capable spell caster

Bright Amber, my Tabaxi Bard, is unfailingly polite to everyone he meets. He believes a kind word and a hot cup of coffee can solve a lot of problems. He's not a pacifist. He will fight if necessary, but he prefers that violence come only after every avenue of peaceful negotiation has been exhausted. Needless to say there are a lot of creatures, even those of an evil bent, who regard him favorably.

"You either fall in line, or fall by the way side." Is essentially the personal philosophy of Lord Vader ... Hobgoblins are a race of darth vaders, personality wise... Yiiiiiiikes. 🤪 Totally changes my outlook on them. Hobgoblins are badass.

As someone with hobgoblin as my favorite player race, I decided to look up the meaning of the "hob" at the start of their name. It can actually tie back to the house-elf aspect you guys spoke of first, as "hob" can mean a stovetop, so they are pretty much called a "stove-goblin'. Although another meaning of the word 'hob' is "elf", so given their pointy ear and size, "elf-goblin" is a more fitting name for them. In the Eberron setting they -are- more or less the elves of that universe.

Could you go over a large amount of currently dead gods in d&d please
@InquisitorThomas6 жыл бұрын
I feel like that'd be largely pointless since a lot of Dead Gods weren't major figures in the first place, and if they are major then they're generally brought back, Orcus has died and came back, Tiamat died and came back, Fucking Mystra dies every other Friday and always comes back. However I think a discussion of Dead Gods could lead to a discussion of Atropals, which are one of the coolest and creepiest monsters in D&D.

Wargs like the Tolkien wargs perhaps except not overly intelligent. Wargs in LOTR were pretty smart.

*worgs but yea. Worgs have a 7 in INT. Much smarter than animals, but not bred for intelligence. They have decent wisdom though.

Hobgoblins seem like one you could do a lot with. Their lore reallt fits into my dislike of the good/evil thing. Run them as just like any other racial empire, and good to go. I think they would run well as perifial thing going on even. Completely irrelivant to your adventures, one province over the hobgoblins just took over and are setting up a kingdom. Increased refugees in the area, cloging roads, filling up inns and improptu camp sights of dislocated peoples. Sudden increase in political envoys a while after, and then a boom of trade due to hobgoblins needing to rebuild the towns they beseiged. Increased banditry both due to desperate refugees and more trade wagon. Meanwhile your party is having to navigate all this just trying to find the bloody filactry of the lich they are after.

They are the best 'Overlord' race and with Orcs as subjects you can create a structured society that has organization on par with the other cultures based on a Lawful Neutral martial society with a 'foreign policy' that, juxtaposed with other societies, trends Evil. This allows geopolitical positions in trade, exchange, development with a 'hair trigger' regarding conflict engagement. I create them as the 'Kara-Tur' class and technology society with a Caste system where Orcs are the common peasants and soldiery, Hobs are the 'class trained' and Aristocracy, with Oni used in special circumstances (ie; Bodyguard Units, Policing Enforcers etc.)

In all honesty, Hobgoblins would probably win. Orcs might be more threatening in a fair fight. But a hobgoblins don't fight on their enemies terms.

7:20 couldn't disagree more. Fantasy races are for all intents and purpuses aliens. they should have names culture mindset and naming schemes that feel distinctly inhuman. Especially the monsterous races. otherwise you end up with a world thats inhabitet by 20 difrent "basically humans but with funky colours/short" There is nothing more boring then learning about a fantasy race that can be sumarised with "yeah they are just humans but tall and purple". Imagine a sci fi novel where alien named josh worships a god named bob by doing the exact same things 12th century christians did. Thats boring.

So in my homebrew bugbears and hobgoblin are the same race and just different genders. Every hobgoblin in the world is female and have built a matriarchal society.
@lawaern34745 жыл бұрын
My only problems with this is that hobgoblins aren't silly enough to think gender matters more than results.

not the video i was looking for when I looked up hobgoblin lore. Seems just like a DM trying to talk to his new friend about DND, but that new friend doesn't really want to play, and complains about everything, and is distracted by spider man and offputting names and random things. I guess this is your style? idk, not gonna hate, just not for me.
