I view the bugbear understanding of language via their natural ambush skill. They are a cunning race, one that many underestimate. So they learn to read to have a greater sense of how to ambush X target. They know the caravan full of weapons is coming through the pass because the letter the runner was carrying. Or maybe they were taught it via the hobgoblins. A way to make them a more effective or a way to have a sense of order in the ranks.

The reach and die damage increase is a reference to how in earlier editions Bugbears could wield weapons 1 size category larger than themselves

Learned about dungeon cast from my DM and as I am new to playing DnD, yalls podcast is very helpful when it comes to dissecting classes and races for the lay person such as myself. Keep up the awesome work. We are all listening.

I listen to Dungeoncast pretty much exclusively on podcast, and I think it's easily the best D&D podcast and channel for lore that I've come across. I'm not quite there yet but I have nearly listened to all of the episodes by now and what I love most is the deep dive into the lore from 1e up to 5e. It gives a really great insight into the history of D&D as a whole, I've learned so much from you guys and have found inspiration for my own campaign I'm setting up. Keep up the amazing work, I look forward to the each new episode every week.

I’m gonna play a bugbear Battlemaster soon, so I’m re-listening to this. I’ve been here for a long time, Dungeoncast. You guys are awesome, and I can’t wait for tomorrow’s episode

Thanks for the shot out guys! Man, after listening to this episode, I miss playing my Bugbear Fighter even more! Such a fun character to play. A fun loving, curious brute haha. I gotta bring Digo back in a campaign somehow. For those that are on The Dungeoncast Patreon , if you check out the SQUV actual play campaign (DM by Brian), you can see my attempt at playing a Bugbear haha :-)

I've played a Bugbear, honestly, I feel like they're ripe with roleplay material. Playing a character who both really wants to fight and also really couldn't be bothered to, was fun, in fact, the can't be bothered lazy part was honestly the most enjoyable to me as well as my fellow players. I did it with some moderation though and almost always ended up going along since he couldn't be bothered to argue with the party either. I do doubt having a party member who never wants to do anything the party does and is also too stubborn to ever give in to what the party wants would be fun to play with. The long-limbed was really fun too, I decided to go for a polearm build, which I haven't actually done before (suprisingly, since my favorite IRL weapon is a polearm, dnd just never made me want to really play it), the thought of attacking people 15 feet away from you was just too good to pass up.

I've been playing in a gestalt campaign since 2021, before the bugbear rewrite. My bugbears Frost Giant slave name is Hvítr Mús which means bright and colorless mouse in Jotunise (giant speak). Mús pronounced "Meus" is an albino bugbear Yeti (Bear) totem barbarian and Runic Knight. I play the tank/ front line control in my party with glaive/polearm master/sentinnel. When I giant size I stand 16 feet tall and occupy 4 squares. With 15' reach. My favorite surprise attack is called Mús in a box. This is where I hide in a small giftwrapped box that only a small creature could get into and wait to be unwrapped. It's gained so much notariety that the famous minstrel Justin Limbertake wrote diddy of it as a warning to opening gifts with unknown contents. My 37 page backstory can not express how much I love Mús, but my tattoo of him will. Bugbear 4 life people! All of my future character will be from purposefull breeding with Mús lineage. You know the saying, once you go bugbear...

I imagine bugbears are taught to read to answer the written summons of hobgoblins when they gather hosts. But that’s just my head canon.

Its funny you compared the bug bear to a sasquatch because my bug bear was modified into a sasquatch like character. Slephrum uses a club made from a small tree and throws boulders.

The bugbear reading only if has a story for why is reasonable, especially as it is pretty easy. Examples being the go to "grew up as a slave of..." which works well with a creature with brute strength, or what I condider a better option of "grew up in a hobgoblin empire. Part of the structure of their included some education."

For reading some words may mean certain things to a human but for a bugbear they might mean something else. For example the words: Inn, Pub, and Hostel, would all mean food and drinks. Store and Shop would mean stuff worth stealing.

Hey guys I had a question/kinda request, are you guys going to cover the worlds of D&D, i.e. Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and Eberron? If so could you cover Eberron, since I'm going to start running a game in that setting and I was interested in your thoughts on it.
