I love this series, my wife and I sit down on occasional Saturday mornings to watch an episode but to omit an Islanders team (packed full of Canadian greats like Bossy, Potvin, Trottier, Gillies, Nystrom, Tonelli and Smith) that won four straight cups (80-83) is a suprise. #isles

I see how this works. Philadelphia Flyers fighting= darkest days of the sport (and music in a minor key). Montreal Canadiens and Quebec Nordiques fighting= a testament to the gritty sportsmanship in hockey (cue: swashbuckling hero music).

Broadstreet Bullies were probably not good for hockey, but definitely not as bad as the Devils and their success in the mid-90s - way to win with less talent using crap trap style of hockey.
@mooseguides7 жыл бұрын
Devils had talent. They had Marty Brodeur in net, Claude Lemieux (who previously won a cup with the Habs), Scott Stevens, and others. Say what you want about the 'crap trap' style, they won decisively in 1995. Sweeping Yzerman's Red Wings wasn't all because of the crash line and neutral trap.

I guess I missed the series where they talked about Bobby Orr. Maybe I'll have to back and watch them again. Wayne might have all the records, But Bobby Orr TOTALLY changed the game of Hockey. A Defenseman having the scoring title twice?!? How many times did Wayne drop the gloves? And I was married to an Edmontonian for decades, before her death. When we'd be up in Edmon-chuk for Christmas there was always a night we'd go to the Northlands Coliseum for an Oilers game. Sometimes two. I love this series, I played through squirts, pee wees, Boston area high school and was a D 1 college defenseman in the 70's, but Bobby Orr was the greatest player, ever. Just ask Don Cherry
@danbratten31032 жыл бұрын
I know of one time Gretzky dropped the gloves. It was at home in Edmonton against my Minnesota Northstars. Neal Broten gave Gretzky a check he didn't like. Gretzky says something to Broten and dropped his gloves. Neal had this puzzled look on his face like why would Gretzky want to fight? Needless to say Broten got the best of Gretzky in that fight.

Cherry found #4 signing hockey sticks in the shower room sent over from the team in the other locker room. I'm from the north shore. Lynn/Swampscott. I attended the Orr - Walton Sports Camp in Orillia in 1970. Orr took a few shots on me and he said a few words. I meet him again 2 years later at a stick signing in Salem at the Rich's department store. He looked at me and said; "I know you, you're the goalie". There's more of course. Let's not forget that he modeled himself after Doug Harvey.

Okay, before I start the flame war, let me begin with a disclaimer: I do not hate Wayne Gretzky. He is the greatest scorer in hockey history and was the Babe Ruth of the NHL; it is only fitting that number 99 is retired from every team in the NHL. He put hockey back on the map for many and encouraged expansion of the league, encouraged people to take up the sport, and so forth. I would gladly have him on my all-time team. Having said that, I would not call him the G.O.A.T. No...wait...put your long knives away for a minute and hear me out. Only one player stands higher than he, or even Gordie Howe, and that would be Bobby Orr. He pretty much did the same thing for hockey in his era as Gretzky did: the league doubled in size, more people became far more aware of hockey, arenas started springing up everywhere, and what's more, he did it from the DEFENSMAN'S position--a position that, up until he, was not the glory position in the game. Unlike Wayne, who was the greatest scorer, Orr was the greatest all-around player, and yet, in this thing, he seems to only get scant mention. You cannot mention Wayne without mentioning Bobby. Moreover, Bobby was Canadian, and thus his story was as interwoven into Canada's interconnection with hockey as Wayne's was. Give plenty of accolades to Wayne, for he certainly deserves every one of them, no question. Yet, let's see more love for Bobby, for he deserves it as well. Could you imagine a team with the both of them on it, on the same shift? I've played a bit of keeper myself, and, if those two were coming at me, I'd probably just step aside and save my energy for the rest of the game; I'd have no chance.

Melt Schmidt accidentally found Orr at 13 and was signed by the Bruins by 14. Don't forget, Orr also had 13 surgeries on his left knee through his amazing accomplishments.

Apparently, based on this documentary of Hockey in the 80's, the one thing that Canada can do even better than playing Hockey, is to pretend that 1980 thru1983 never happened. So the Oilers won 40% of the Stanley Cups in that decade. You do know there was another team (and I won't mention that teams name since it may offend the delicate sensibilities of certain individuals) that also won 40% of the Stanley Cups in that decade --- and they won them "consecutively". That team made '5' consecutive Stanley Cups appearances and won 19 straight playoff series in the process --- still a record to this day). They may not have had a glamour boy on their squad, but no team in hockey (before or after) ever had a more determined work ethic or desire to win than they did. It was the single greatest stretch of Hockey played by (for the most part) the same core team members over a 5 year period. You would think they would rate at least a 2 second mention on a show like this wouldn't you. Let's just pretend it didn't happen --- can't let our feathers get ruffled. After all, a team from the U.S. that won 4 consecutive Stanley Cups? Canadian Hockey gods forbid!

Montreal vs. Quebec is one of my favorite Rivalries ... too bad people who don't know anything about Hockey moved Quebec to Denver ...I don't care what anyone says, but the Nordiques vs Canadiens was much more intense than the Red Wings vs. the stupid Avalanche... and the Broad Street Bullies were bad for Hockey? I take it Canada wasn't saying that when in the 76 Super Series, the Red Army was making pansies out of Canada and they needed the Flyers to save the NHL's reputation..
