I believe that if Canada had won by two or more goals, they would've won the gold medal. If Russia had won, had the game ended in a tie, of if Canada had won by one goal, Russia would've won the gold medal. With both teams disqualified, Finland won the gold, although I wonder if the entire tournament was later vacated, meaning in effect it never took.plsce.

The world juniors are held in Canada once every 3 years at least, normally once every two. That doesn't explain how in the past 15 years there has only been one year where we didn't win a medal. Since 1982, the first year Canada sent a true national team, we have only finished outside of the medals 5 times. 5 times in 27 years. One time in the past 15. Yeah, its only because we host the tournament so offen............

Sorry mackie252007, you are entitled to your opinion, & I'm not trying to start an argument here, I have to disagree. I'm in possession of the entire game, I've watched it again & again. All game long, the game got chippier & chippier. Canada weren't angels, (Steve Chiasson's vicious two handed slash of Dmitri Tsygurov after Tsygurov cross checked him comes to mind), but the Russians were getting dirtier, & dirtier as the game wore on. The lovely spear by Alexander Galchenyuk (father of current Montreal Canadiens star Alex Galchenyuk) into Mike Keane's groin was an interesting, unpenalized play. Alexander Mogilny's wonderful, "skilled" chops at Pierre Turgeon's ankles during a Canadian powerplay. Canada had NEVER had bench clearing brawls in World Junior play. Russia had done it twice to this point. Russian players started it, several times, including a vicious cross check to the FACE of Theo Fleury by Pavel Kostichkin. Oh, btw, watch the Russian's stick on that play. It's around Sanipass' groin. I'd punch him in the face too. But little shots like that don't start bench clearing brawls. As soon as Fleury got up to defend himself, Russian player Evgeny Davydov (former draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets), started a line of three Soviets pouring off of the bench. THAT, according to IIHF rules, is an immediate ejection of those players. But we didn't see that. We saw the precious IIHF disqualify both these teams, when only Russia deserved to be sent home. Sorry hoss, but the fact remains that the Russians started it. Period. Stephane Roy getting double teamed by two Russian idiots, so Canada started doing it as well. Oh, let's not forget the "saint" of Detroit, Vladimir Konstantinov, fucking HEAD BUTTING Greg Hawgood, breaking his nose. I'm sorry, you're talking about a punch, in hockey, but you're neglecting the head butt? I'd send my players over too. The damned officials were less than useless all tournament long, & Russia had a pour tournament throughout, & played dirty through most of it. (Sergei Fedorov STILL apologizes for slashing a Czech player right in the throat earlier in the tournament). If I were Canada's coach (never happen, I'm not that talented) I'd also go over to the Russian's bench & call out the coach because it's fucking Junior hockey for Christ's sakes. Grow up. You're losing? Play better. Don't engineer a cheap way to eliminate Canada. Especially if you're losing. It's good, however, that Russia fired the idiot coach the moment he stepped off the plane.
