Depends on style as well. I use a senior 70 flex cut (ends up at about 80 flex). If you want quick release softer sticks are gonna help put more power with less effort. If you want more shot power in general (and you have the strength to actually put that power into the stick) higher flex tends to store more potential energy when you load it. So if you're a really heavy guy (and have proper shooting technique) you could rock a 90-100 flex.

Back in the day of wood sticks, the more flexible the shaft often meant sacrificing torsional rigidity as well. This meant that the blade would twist backward more under load and you would lose a significant amount of accuracy. They also didn't publish a flex rating then so you would just have to lean on a stick to feel how much flex you were getting. Flex ratings started appearing on aluminum shafts. I always stuck with a 100 flex in order to maintain accuracy. Plus, I had a lot more power back at that stage of my game. After getting back into hockey after being out for a decade I instinctively went with a 100 flex one piece. I quickly found out that I didn't have the power I once had and wasn't able to load it up the way I liked. I dropped down to 85 flex and it helped a lot. I was recently thinking about how much better sticks are made now and how they still maintain that torsional rigidity even at lower flex ratings. So I decided to try a 75 flex and I'm really liking it. I'm getting better pop while still keeping the same accuracy.

Yeah this is crazy to see for me. I too left the game for about 10yrs after graduating highschool, and am just getting back into it now with my old 100flex stick. Every guy back then was using a 100 like it was a dick swinging contest. Now it's refreshing to see guys actually thinking things through and considering what that means, and realizing they would be better off with the lower flex sticks. I need to get a 65 or 75.

One thing to note for all the amateurs is that your stick becomes more "whippy" as you use it. Initially a stick has some pop to it but over time it starts to fade and a 65 flex can start to become unbearably flexible. Pros have unlimited supply so they can afford to cycle through them. I wouldnt recommend 75 or 65 to anybody whos around or over 200 pounds.

I would be curious to see meraki. They are based out of Shakopee, mn. I was referred to them by a coworker whose teenage daughter goes to Breakaway Academy. My son has been using a youth hat trick 20 flex p92 blade. He is 65 lbs and easily has the hardest shot and puck control of anyone in his group 2nd grade 3rd year mites. An I would say as hard as anyone in the grade above him. I saw a big difference when I got him this stick, but his previous one was a 15$ sherwood youth stick. Yhis one was $80, and they have youth $80 junior $90 intermediate $110 and senior$120. I would be very curious to see how a 110 or 120 dollar stick would compare to some of the name brand $300+ sticks. I would assume there would be a slight faloff but last year I found a $40 piscifun serpent fishing rod I prefer to My $140 st croix, sometimes more expensive isn't any better. I plan to pick up a new stick next time I'm in Shakopee. I just help coach and play pickup games with my son and his friends so I'm definitely just a recreational player not looking to break the bank and want to replace my 25 year old wooden sticks but I think these may actually perform close to a stick almost 3 times the price. Anyways thanks for your videos as a dad who didn't play organized hockey trying to become more informed and a better coach i find your videos useful and entertaining. .

I used to use a 95 flex and then went way down to a 65 flex. 65 is nice for quick release on the snap shots but the biggest issue is on receiving passes. At 5'9 and 175lbs I found you need to have extremely soft hands and I found it more difficult to really get a good feel for the puck when dekeing or toe drags because you need such a loose grip on the damn thing. You really have to absorb the passes quite dramatically. Also if you're over 170lbs your stick will break easier especially if you take a ton of slapshots. While I don't agree with the weight determines your flex thing sometimes there is a limit to how low you can truly go. As the guy at my local hockey shop said to a teenager using a 40 flex, "it's cool to flex your stick until it breaks ". I now use 75 flex and I feel like for anyone between 170-190lbs it's a good balance.

It's all about feel. I'm 6' 245lbs and the 95 flexes I use are more akin to smaller guys using 75 or less. I cut a couple inches off for better puck handling too, adding stiffness. The pros and manufacturers have it right, if you start at half your weight and tweak from there, you'll find something that works for you. I've used 110 and 100 flex sticks and they worked fine, but the 95s work best for that balance of speed and power of the release as well as puck handling feel. Plus, as a centre, a stiffer stick will beat out a softer one on those annoying faceoff stalemates. In short, for those that come here to figure out the absolute best flex for hockey sticks, don't just go low because Tommy said it was best. Every body is different, find what works best for you
@mhicaoidh1
@mhicaoidh1 Жыл бұрын
Sorry. The pros and manufacturers who say that are wrong. They only say it, because that advice has just become the traditional advice that's given. However "half your weight" is not a correct measure or starting point for determining what flex stick you should use. In both our cases (same height and weight) ... for one, they don't even make a 122 flex stick that's commercially available. For another, you ended up settling on a 95 (38% if our weight), where I play with a 70 flex (28% of our weight). It's less about body weight, and more about body strength, position (centers should absolutely use a stiffer flex), and style you play. I play wing, in close to the net taking wristers where I benefit from a lower flex. When I play center, I do switch to a stiffer flex stick. Also, cutting the stick doesn't make it stiffer. This is just another misleading oversimplification that has been hoisted upon us. Cutting a stick down just changes your ability to impart leverage on it. But, a cut down 95 flex stick is still has a 95 flex shaft.
@Milehighsnake98
@Milehighsnake98 Жыл бұрын
@@mhicaoidh1 Just to clarify, yes, cutting the stick down DOES make it stiffer. Why? Because of how stick flex is measured. Bauer even shows you what the flex is at various points to cut it down. Remember, stick flex is measured by suspending the stick at the 2 ends, and then the amount of weight it takes to generate 1" of deflection in the middle of the shaft. So by shortening the shaft, you have to add more weight to get that same 1". So yes, it does make it stiffer. But you're right that strength has a lot to do with it. That's the funny thing. I watched my sons peewee team. Most of the kids on that team were using 40 and even 50 flex sticks. My son is the oldest (not the tallest) but was still using a 30 flex, and had the hardest (and most accurate) shot on his team. Now he's using a 40 flex as he grew too tall by the end of the season that the 30 was too short but I digress.
@mhicaoidh1
@mhicaoidh1 Жыл бұрын
@@Milehighsnake98 unfortunately you're incorrect. Stick flex is measured when the shaft is 60" long. So, technically, a stick that isn't 60" is outside of the standard for flex measurement. Bauer puts those numbers on there to represent the "perceived flex" if you cut it down. The material of the stick does not change. The material of the stick does not get stiffer when you cut it down. Consider that for a moment. What changes is your ability to impart force (leverage) on the stick. So, it "feels" stiffer to you ... but it isn't. You just are able to as efficiently impart force on it. Additionally, for example, when you buy a stick with a 63" shaft, that says it is 80 flex (stamped right on the shaft). That 80 flex refers to a measurement taken at the 60" length ... not the 63" length. So, there are two reasons why the flex doesn't change: 1) The physical properties of the stick material are not altered by it being cut down. The material will still flex at the same rate because that is what it is designed to do. 2) Flex can only be measured, and have any validity for comparison's sake, when measured at 60". This is the standard the industry settled on. So, all stick flex will be measured with a 60" shaft. So, if you take my 87 flex Bauer stick that is 60" and cut and 2" off of it. According to the "mark" it will then be a 96 flex stick. It's just not. It might "feel" stiffer (for the reasons stated about) but the material that makes up that stick is still 87 flex material.

These are real questions that need to be answered! Too bad the stick manufacturers still just stick to the "half your body weight for a flex" advice.
@josephbrooks104
@josephbrooks104 Жыл бұрын
Weight for sure isn't an accurate indcator of exactly what flex to use, but its probably the best the manufacturers can do. There is no set measurement people would know for overall strength or how a person shoots the puck. I find your shot style, or how far you apart you place your hands for various shots does impact the flex selection that works best for you.

I’m 5’8” and 180 lbs, for reference. I use a 90 flex and my shot is harder than it was with a lower flex. It does require more effort than a lower flex, but I can shoot without sacrificing form, quickness of release, and accuracy. The higher flex also helps with winning faceoffs since I’m a center. My advice to newer players is to shoot with the highest flex that you can shoot PROPERLY with. Start with a low flex and learn how to shoot, then creep up until you hit that sweet spot.

From my experience and testing myself I’ve found a few things. Flex should be based of play style and comfort of course. But positions come into play too. As a defenseman typically a bit of a stiffer flex can be better for a little extra strength in battles and taking slap shots from the point. Centers will benefit more taking for face offs with a stiffer stick again for the added strength in the stick off the draw. Wingers it carts based on play style more than position. As in I’m a right shot player who plays left wing for my one timer so I use an 87 flex since more of my shots r slap shots. If u take more snap shots or wrist shots a lower flex may benefit ur game. Again tho most of this is mostly comfort. A teammate I played with who was a 6’2” 210lbs defenseman used a 65 because it was more comfortable and felt better for him.

The thing people needs to understand, the energy you put into a stick is like a spring. E=0.5*k*x^2, k being the spring constant (how high is your flex rating) and x being the distance your blade is from its original position (deflection) when you flex it. So the takeaway is that raising your flex will linearly raise the energy you can put into the stick, while raising the deflection will raise the energy squared, but raising the flex will make it harder to flex the stick (deflection will lower for the same applied force) and vice versa. So in other words, if you half your spring constant and that makes you flex the stick twice as far for the same applied force, you will actually store twice as much energy in the stick (0.5*(1/2)*(2)^2=0.5*(1/2)*4=0.5*2) which is then transferred to the puck, for which E=0.5*m*v^2, where m is the mass of the puck (which does not change) and v the velocity. So it translate directly into speed the puck can gain. So lower flex rating (or lower spring constant) will always be better until it feels like a spaghetti.

It all depends on your mechanics for stick flex. Im over 200lbs and use a 65 flex stick. I cut it in between my bottom lip and my nose (just a little bit shorter than retail Bauer height on a p28 lie 5 blade) and it offers me the best release, power and accuracy. With stiffer sticks it takes too much effort to get perfect shots off where as the whippier flex allows me to not be perfect but still shoot hard and accurate. It also allows me to "communicate" with the stick allowing me to tell in my form how much I'm letting the stick do the work in generating power.

Would be helpful to know how (relatively) strong Tommy is ... for example, how much does he bench? When it comes to flex, it's not the stick that matters ... it's the shooter. Based on the results, my guess is (not taking the piss) that he doesn't lift much. A strong shooter will use a higher flex to generate even more power. Strong shooters using lower flexes, from my experience, have trouble controlling the shot (often shooting over the net). Relatively weaker players will use, and benefit from, lower flex sticks. The general advice that ties flex to body weight is total rubbish. Most beer leaguers who don't workout with weights should probably use sticks in the 65 - 77 range. But, just doing a glance at the sticks used on my team, they mostly have sticks in the 80s with some in the 90s.

I used the Easton carbon 100 flex when they first came on the scene, the lower flexes really weren't for me, snapper was my go to, no backwind, roll the puck along the blade heel to toe and definitely not a heel curve. Heel curves I found to be inaccurate but a huge amount of power when shooting from the heel, I also found they took too much away from the rest of the puck skills. Try shooting 50+ biscuits before every training session for a while, you'll get used to it and your accuracy will soar.

This is a cool test, but load of those shots are in motion with a bit more body weight in the stick. I am not a small player so I move to a 95 flex as when I load it for wrist and snap shots it really whips out. Standing still I agree they do feel like lumber.

Considering most NHL players use 75-85, most beer league players are likely 55-65 flex depending on height and weight. Might sound low but most people under 6ft and under 180lbs aren’t training 4 days a week to have the same shot power as a pro. Bigger or mostly doing slappers, maybe 70-75 but 60-65 is likely best for most people

I'm 192 cm / 6'3 ft and few years ago slapshot was with 100 flex 142 kmh / 88,2 mph. Now I use 73 flex and slapshots are bad, but wrists and snaps are powerfull as hell!

I went from a 115 to an 85(my stick broke inbetween a double header and it was the only option) playing with an 85 feels like it's a limp noodle in my hand with no snap at all on the shots. I have a 80-90mph slapper normally and with the 85 flex i get like 70-80 and the shots go wild. Side note i am 6'3" 240lbs

The question I have is, how much do you weigh? The flex of a stick and your weight and size have a lot to do with each other. If I used a 65 flex stick it would feel like slapping a bowling ball with a glade of grass.

idk i just dont have control with flexy sticks. im 6'4 200lbs but i only recently went from 105 to 95. i think height has a lost to do with the amout of torque you can generate with each stick. i.e weber used 115 (6'4 220 pounds) or Ovi 6'4 240 lbs with 100 flex. Then you got Johnny Gaudreau 5'9 165lbs using a 55 flex. however new age players seem to be getting used to these whippy flexes because the game is faster and you dont have as much time to load the shot anymore

Having a flex suited to you is more important than how high or low it is. There was a trend of higher is cooler for a long time. Don't just go the other way. Pick a flex that matches you for real, not what you think you need

Excellent video. Thank you for confirming my own observations. As a beginner, it's tough to know I'm doing something right or wrong in comparison to others as, many times, they don't even know why they use the flex that they do. Would've been interesting to see you guys go even lower in flex with intermediate and junior sticks to see at what point there are diminishing returns.

Left hand more foooorward. No pull on upper hand so... If you dont use the stick and use just hands the flex really doesn't matter. And great shooters drops the knee. Check Laine and Joakim Kemell. They load the stick with dropping the knee and then the flex matters

It all depends on how good you can flex the stick I’m 6’1 and like 160 and I use a 70 flex and I can bend the stick to the ground the only bad part about a lower flex is once you wear it out your shot won’t be consistent

Hi long time subscriber to your page like your content. I have a request for a topic if possble please; Currently i use the w88 curve from warrior because it has the lowest lie on paper , and it is a nice all around curve. Are you able to make a video of the different low lie sticks and curves available from the dif brands? I read online the lie listing on paper is bot comparible brand to brand so the only real way to know is the put them flat blade beside each other. Tough part is i (and i think other) dont have access to all the sticks to check lol. Thank you 👊

Yes the dif lies across dif brands/ curves. For example, ive read that w88 4 lie is the same lie as bauers p88 6 lie… so it is not always apples to Apples across brands/sticks/curves So if i was wanting a comparable stick to try in a lie 4 w88 Wat sticks in ccm or bauer hav the same lie for example thanks!

Anyone have a good recommendation of a 65 flex stick I could pick up for cheap? I play once a week or so. Back at it after a 10yr hiatus. I used to play roller and have now been trying out some ice and loving it. But the puck moves so fast it's like it's always trying to get away from me while I shoot! I think having a lower flex will help alot. Thanks for any recommendations....I don't know the hockey gear game at all anymore

Ive been using 95 ever for the last handful of years and i cannot go back. Im 6’2”, and have been between 175 and 200lbs since ive been using 95 flex sticks. If i use anything that isnt 95, the stick over flexes and i miss the net. Not to mention anything under 95 flex is a 60” or 62” stick, which is too short, which forces me to use a 95 flex stick for the 64” height.

All depends on the person. I played with a 75 as a teen, then a 95 as an adult. Then someone put a 110 in my hands at an ODR a couple years ago and I'll never do less again. Well, unless I lose weight but I don't see that happening at my age. My figure is pretty much defined till I'm an old man. I'm 6ft @ 250lbs. Even a 110 can sometimes feel like a wet noodle to a guy my size. I'm a brick shit house on hockey skates, I'd break a 65 by passing you the puck.

Your shooting mechanics matter. He isn’t loading his stick fully, at any flex. It’s not about your weight, it’s about how strong you are.

When picking your flex, try 1/3 of your weight. I weight between 180 to 190, and I’m 5’6”. I use the same formula when picking my son’s flex for his stick. I find that you can’t go wrong with 1/3 of your weight.

Weight doesn't matter. Height matters when it comes to leverage, but with changes in height come changes in stick length, which changes leverage ... which changes perceived flex. Upper body strength is really what matters when it comes to choosing flex. For example, if you have a 75 flex stick, and cut three inches off, most will say "it's not more like an 85 flex stick" ... but it's still a 75 flex stick really. You just have less leverage on a shorter stick, and therefore it will feel harder to flex (perceived flex).
