jesus chirst, any new guys watching this video relax. your overthinking this sport wayy too much. you can start at any age as long as u have the physical ability to do it (atleast one arm to hold the stick, you technically need nothing else :) ). for your first game, be sure you know how to skate enough were you can turn, stop, and skate forward (you should be able to do all these things comfortably like its walking with enough practice, its easier then you think. and for your first game just have fun, dont pay too much attention to how your doing because i dont care how long youve been practicing your gonna suck... really bad. dont expect to be gretzky your first game (if you dont know who he is look him up). Seriously just have fun, smell the ice and work on getting better in practice not in games

@windandwavesmms98485 жыл бұрын
I'm just going to do this even though I'm super late. More will follow and hopefully see this. I could "skate" in 9th grade. And that's all could do. Never held a stick in my hands until 14 years later when a buddy of mine who at one point was going to be drafted before he decided it wasn't his calling got me back on the ice. He moved home and bought me gear because he just loves the game. He taught me a good amount, but I promise what you learn in open skates doesn't equate to the same production in a game. My first real game was a serious embarrassment. I was just a fill in for 4 games and I did make one good breakout pass play, but looked like a bender and couldn't stop to save my life. I also got a breakaway pass and fell straight on my butt at center ice. Dang... Fast forward a few months during a separate rec league that was more like practice I had 15 goals in 8 games. This includes 3 hat tricks and a few breakaways. The point is that this video is right. The number one key is to have fun. And you will. My tips: Never give up. If you truly enjoy it, don't give up. You will have good games and bad game. I had games I wanted to quit because it was such a terrible showing, and the next game I went off. Be mentally stable and understand that these things happen. Always try to get better. You can practice in so many ways off ice. For me I loved to work on hand-eye. I'd just take a puck and flip it around. Hand to stick, stick to hand, stick to stick. It really helps on so many levels. And even though this is a long comment, to keep it a little shorter my last tip is watch PROFESSIONAL hockey. One compliment I have gotten even when I was the worst guy on the ice was knowing my position and where to be. Watching professional hockey will teach you so much about your position on a professional level. Not just the skills part but the overall knowledge of the game. Believe me when I say I'm one of only probably 6 people on my team that actually watch hockey regularly. And it shows. I don't care how hard your shot is, if you never get into position, you won't get the pass or the opportunity. Learn your position.

One more tip; keep your eye on the freaking game. We swapped sides between the 1st and 2nd periods, and I didn't realise. I saw the side we were on in the 1st period was empty and thought, 'woah, where are our D-men?' The puck was about to move there so I yelled at the girl who was playing my wing (who has only been playing 6 months) to 'get back over to the other side'…and looked like a d*ck. I didn't mean it in a nasty way…but if I'd been fully locked in I would have realised we had swapped sides and she was in exactly the right place, and would have saved myself the embarrassment!

I think you nailed it with "have fun". My first game on a rec team I made plenty of mistakes, asked some of the guys, and found out they really didn't give a crap. They were more interested in going to the bar afterward than the game. It was a drinking team with a hockey problem. But that "team" aside, my best games were the ones I enjoyed most. Confidence was not an issue, worrying about mistakes was not an issue, when I realized like you said, we're not playing for the Stanley Cup - it's supposed to be fun, and when I could relax and just have fun I actually played better too.

My first game, it felt very chaotic. Didn't know where to be and when to be there. (stay in you lane!) faceoffs were confusing too. My first actual game of hockey was amazing. I was used to indoor ice from practices, and that at first was a bit nerve wracking as well, but this was completely different. I had the butterflies when we were lined up waiting to step on, but once I did, that was all gone. It had changed from being nervous to just sheer wonder and excitement. It was about to go down. SO as a goalie who's just starting out, here's my tips from my own personal experience. Leave life in the locker room. The ice is for hockey, not for what happened that day. Stay busy, even if you aren't seeing many shots, you can still focus and track the puck. Be vocal, very vocal. Not only is this going to help your team, by letting them know various things (Like your D going for a puck on the boards with a forward on their tail, "ONE ON ONE ON!"), but it'll calm you down, you'll get into the game easier. You're a "quarterback" as a goalie. Nobody can see the ice and the play as well as you do. If you notice someone is unmanned, then bark that out loud. Hockey is hectic, and skaters don't have eyes in the back of their head, but you get to see everything. Do them a favor there and it'll make your job easier too! Be confident, believe that your the Wolf out there, and that the other team is nothing but a bunch of sheep. You've no reason to fear any one of them. Let them instead worry about you. You've got this. Don't dwell on the goals and mistakes. There's nothing you can do about it now, but what you can do is, FOCUS ON THE GAME AS IT IS RIGHT NOW AT THAT MOMENT. Not a moment before, or a moment ahead. There's nothing you can do about either, but you can certainly take charge of the here and now. After the game don't fret about being barked at for your mistakes. If you've gone out there and came off exhausted, nobody should be giving you a rough time. You worked your butt off, and that's all that can be asked of anyone. ENJOY IT! Every time I've stepped on the ice I've been excited. There hasn't ever been a time when I wasn't excited to stop some shots. Make one great save and you'll be hungry to stop them all, and hungry for the opportunity to do it again. Your team counts on you, if you give them your full effort, you'll be rewarded not just on the ice, but off it as well. Good Luck goalies!

Especially when you're making a Do's and Don'ts video and get to a Don't when playing contact hockey, film you getting crushed and your bucket goes flying off. More than looking dumb though, hitting your head on the ice is not cool unless you like concussions and getting knocked out.

Just found this video but I'll share my story anyways. I started playing hockey at age 24. I'm from a Boston suburb where most of the neighborhood kids began skating at ages 3-5. I linked up with some of those childhood friends and joined a local 21+ coed sunday league, with no checks or slap shots. It was great fun but boy these people could SKATE. I was laughing when you mentioned the part about standing still while getting checked. This was literally me my first game except it was a 2 for 1. both Centers were chasing a dumped puck into my corner. I was so bad at skating I couldn't get out of the way. In fact I remember not being able to do anything except eat the hit (couldn't skate backwards or hustle for sh*t with my chicken legs). I later blocked a mean wrist shot (by a teammate, because I couldn't get out of the way in time) with inner thigh below the cup. Left the biggest purple welt, looked like I was shot by a giant paintball gun. ahhh good times

I'm hoping I can play hockey I have weak ankles, and I dont know what to get, I'm not gonna get new gear i just dont knoe what to do for skates
@kelbachus77194 жыл бұрын
Justin, it doesn't really matter. If your ankles are weak now they won't be in a few months of skating. If you want to strengthen your ankles before you start, getting onto a narrow beam or narrow rock and standing on one foot on that narrow or uneven surface for a while then switching feet is good practice both for strength and balance. If you don't want to jump straight into a game while you're feeling unsteady, start by going to public skate at your local rink. You could even take a learn to skate class; the fundamental skill you need to play is skating -- everything else builds on that. Forward, turn, stop. By the time you've learned that, your ankles will be fine. As far as skates go, any skate that fits you will do, especially at first. Modern skates don't need to be broken in the way older ones used to, but it will take time regardless for your foot and the skate to be friends. Skating will also make your feet hurt at first, unless for some reason you have foot muscles already. Some novices like to lace up their skates SUPER TIGHT, especially if they think their ankles are weak -- it makes them feel more secure. I don't really recommend it. It won't really help (you're going to be wobbly and uncomfortable at first no matter what, just paying your dues!), and it's better to just learn to balance. I play a lot of D, so I keep my skates snug around my foot but loose around my ankle, so I get good flexibility. I don't even bother to lace the top eyelets. I got my first pair of skates from Play it Again Sports, which is a good place to get your first set of gear. My first skates were gently used, and a bit broken in already which was nice. I started in Bauers but moved to CCM because for whatever reason they almost universally seemed to fit better. I bought cheap skates. Why? Because if I didn't keep up with hockey I'd feel like a real moron having paid hundreds of dollars for my gear. As it turned out I did, and my gear held up anyway. Win-win. The only thing I felt motivated to upgrade was my gloves; the first pair didn't fit well (I have small hands), and I went down to a junior's size and it made a big difference. It was also nice to have a clean pair. One thing they don't mention in this video: don't be the person that never washes their gear. Ugh! Wear socks, wear clothes under your gear, and wash your gear once a season. Dry it out between games so you don't smell heinous and aren't the person who brought MRSA into the locker room.

I am really lucky that my local Icehouse in Greensboro, NC has a development league made up of guys/gals who just want that extra night to play, but also people who have never played hockey. But i didnt go in and have to be in a competitive league where I let my team down a lot. and I get to learn at my pace, which has been amazing. I have always wanted to play but didnt have the money, nor would my parents let me because it was too dangerous. but now at 21, It is the most fun I have ever had. And its a great workout!

I had my first ever hockey practise yesterday and I think I did pretty well cuz I’m not afraid of falling and I gave it my best to not be all too stiff and I hope I’ll make it to being able to play with the team some time though I am a bit sad that nobody there is my age because it’s beer league and a proper U20 team wouldn’t take me 😭

Always remember, you aren't trying to win a Stanley Cup, so in the big picture there shouldn't be any pressure. And you also paid just as much money to be on that ice as everyone else and you have to start somewhere. I agree with Chris in that your teammates are there to help you and don't be afraid to ask questions. Very unique video idea Chris, I think you did a great job articulating the issues around this question.
@WhoDissGuy8 жыл бұрын
"Don't talk much." I hate when the worst players do the most talking. Keep your mouth closed and your ears open. Ask questions and try to improve on your own weak areas. Guys will cheer you on as you get better no matter your level as long as you're trying to learn and improve.
