This video is great because there are so many players that don't understand this. I'm not a goalie but my high school goalie got hurt pre game because of some of this nonsense. Generally during warm ups I'm aiming left to right no higher than knee level. Most goalies I played with like the side to side and to really get a good lateral workout during warmups.

I really appreciate this video. Personally I love getting shots from afar first and then have them work in, while working around the crease. Normally I also like to talk with my players to see how they like to warm up as to where they like to start shots off and then share my preferences (so I'm prepared as to where the shots are gonna come off and go). I'm lucky to be part of a good hockey crowd that know how to respect goalies, and they know the proper safety and etiquette of hockey warm ups of player and goalie. Now to share my personal pet peeves during warm ups (these have happened, but with people who think they're "special", luckily though there have been other players there to correct them), multiple shots at once, 2 on 0's, slap shots to the head, and my personal favorite... immediately crash the net and then dangle the shot to score. There is my two cents on pros and cons from a goalie perspective in warm ups.

I play with friends, and we play together just for fun. No leagues no games against anyone. So I guess you all know what it means for goalies during warm up... 3 shots at the same time. Only slapshots. Danglers... Normaly I dont even try to save slapshots. I just stand still. Same with danglers. If someone shoots at the same time with the guy whos shot Im taking, I skate away from goal and start doing warm ups I've learned when I was goalie in a team. I might be a bad team mate, but hey... I dont want to get hurt. :)

A LOT of skaters need to watch this video. Can’t stand when people shoot at you while you’re setting up the net. If I take a calf shot you’re gonna get an earful of me. Some teams know what to do and line up on the blue line for shots, or take some shots through the slot. Others have no idea and you’ll get a line of guys trying to dangle and pick you off. If that’s the case I typically skate away to go stretch more and talk to them after the game

I barely take any shots in warmup as a goalie. I prefer to do a few laps, take a handful of shots, stretch, then maybe take a couple more shots. When I do let my team take shots in warmup, they're just trying to score, I've gotten a bunch of head shots/had danglers broken, and so on, so I don't give them the opportunity to throw me off my game. Sometimes a player will say take more shots and I'll refuse. I almost never have bad games with my minimalist warmups, but always have bad games when I let my team do their thing. Bad warmups make for bad games. I'd rather go in cold.

Your goalie is your everything. You must guard him, assort confidence in him. Make him feel at bay; only then will he return the favor and guard your goal for the entirety of the game. He holds the burden of the whole team when it comes to powerplays. Respect your goaltender as he will be looking your backs.

+100. Let us calibrate our body to its conditioning for the day. You have to hit 6'x4' non moving target with a 3" disk. We have to stop that 3" disk doing upwards of 100mph. Timing and coordination is everything to our job. Warm up is for the goalie. Remember that.

With my team I hate when they shoot really close during warm ups and wait to long by going to far wide or try to "Patrick Kane" and deke in warmups especially the defence. Yeah, and if this is done to a goalie who is still learning its just the worst... I've seen my fair share of "flinching" goalies and it generally stems from idiot teammates in practice rifling it in at close range. Its already terrifying enough to have highly vulcanized hard rubber puck fly at you during a game but thats not needed during warm ups or practice.

Trying to stretch me out, shot in the back, shot in the head, shot at when I wasn't even facing in that direction, or the old 'don't mind me, I'm just going to blast you with my hardest slapshot from six feet away'... I'm at the point now where if I don't like what's happening I just leave the net, after all these years I don't put up with that crap anymore.
