@@petrekguitars Well best wishes from Braunschweig. I am bedridden at the moment and your videos are one of the best distractions and really give me strength. I started with classical guitar and love to see all these vintage guitar repairs. Especially the big structural repairs are highly interesting and I learn a lot. If I get better I'll soon modify my old Strat copy. I had that guitar since I was 17 and it's acutally built pretty well. Only problem is that the truss rod is off center. But I'll just re-route the channel and install a two way truss rod.

So because of your talent and reverence for vintage instruments, this beauty (if taken care of) will see its 100th birthday and beyond. By the way, during your chisel work I was literally saying to myself “Man. You know he keeps those chisels super sharpened because look how fine his chisel work is. I just hope he doesn’t cut himself!” Then that’s exactly what you did! 😢 You literally poured your hard work and blood into this amazing restoration! Awesome work! And thank you for helping to preserve the history of this instrument! Loved the sound of those Schaller pups! Were those new “old” stock or just well cared for 40 year-old pups? 🧐 👏🙌🎸😎👊

Beautiful guitar - but looked an impossible repair at the start. Scary neck removal too - is it common to have a dowel in the neck joint like that? Getting the neck angle right and straight looks incredibly hard - I guess you have many years of experience. Like the widening the dowel trick! In the end what an amazing job, even restoring the volume and tone knobs. Must be incredibly satisfying to bring a fantastic old instrument like that back to life.
@petrekguitarsАй бұрын
Thanks a lot for watching and for your kind feedback Paul. Some Factorys used to install a Dowel some not. You have to be carful when removing the Neck. It´s different then removing a "Dove Tail" joint... This Guitar has a lot of lovely details...Best Regards Nik

Hofners have always struck me as having rather flimsy construction. Do you know if that dowel in the neck pocket was by design or possibly from a previous repair?. The amount of glue residue on the neck block looks like the work of an amature...cant imagine that was original to tge guitar. Good work. You brought it back to life. Cheers!
@petrekguitarsАй бұрын
The lot for your kind comment and for your question. I am pretty sure that this Dowel was installed from the factory. I had a couple of Beatles Basses on my Workbench with the same issues and it was alway a lot of glue involved🙂Best Regards Nik
@briandeeley1599Ай бұрын
They most likely produced a lot of these guitars back then and they were priced accordingly. The amount of glue might have been intended as a gap filler, rather than creating fine joinery they just stuck it in a alignment jig and let the glue do the work but then I could be totally wrong.
@petrekguitarsАй бұрын
@@briandeeley1599 Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. I think you are totally correct. The Glue was also a gap filler but I used to Repair a lot of these Hide Glue German Made Neck Joints. Best Regards Nik

I’m confused by this guitar being labeled as a 1960 McCartney got his first Horner between Aril and July 1961. He was just another kid off the street, not a celebrity. He bought it at a Steinway store in Germany because “it was cheap”. I too watch twoodford videos. I would be interested in his take on the neck removal you used. No harm doing it your way, in fact I’ve pulled a neck by this approach. But the supposition that it is less prone damage is not supported. You use it, you haven’t had problems, so alls good. I’m planning on going back and watching your other videos. Thanks.

The neck joints on these old Hofners are so bad. Seems they just winged it, dumped a lot of glue in there and hoped for the best. Titebond isn't a good gap filler, so I hope your repair will hold up. Also, looks like someone has been in there before. I have never seen a dowel in a Hofner neck joint?
@petrekguitarsАй бұрын
Thanks a lot for your feedback and for sharing your experience. I am not 100% sure but this dowel seems to be original and it was also the old Hide Glue that they used to work with back in the days. Best Regards Nik
