Technically, Horace Hogan did initially debut as a member of Raven's Flock before Saturn broke the faction up, but he barely did anything of note during that short stint. However, it really shows how much WCW cared about Raven's Flock when, instead of maybe following through on that tease of Raven vs. Savage that was once done earlier that same year, the one thing the nWo took from Raven's Flock was... Horace Hogan.

WWE would have found some way to bury Sting and screw Bret over at the same time. Thank flip it happened in WCW where both were treated with the respect they deserve, even if they did put on a pretty lackluster showing on this occasion. They just didn't seem to click on this night for whatever reason.

Well said...the idea that WCW treated them with "the respect they deserved" is laughable. Bret was never anything but on the periphery of the main event scene until Vince Russo came over, The bottom line is that Pat Patterson was Bret's secret weapon, and he was never ever leaving the WWF.

1000% in agreement that THE moment to end the streak should have been that Diamond Cutter. Both guys were over, but listen to that pop when it happens. The underdog managing to gut it out and upset the undefeated champ is a story that writes itself as opposed to all the goofy shit that happened with Nash.
@matthewrosenthal753
@matthewrosenthal753 Ай бұрын
This would have been better than Nash. However the real truth is neither was the right time nor the right person. Goldberg’s streak still had life, as it did with Nash and further neither Nash nor DDP needed it. Breaking that streak needed to be someone that was right there to use it to make them a star. DDP and Mash were well established stars.
@maxdecphoenix
@maxdecphoenix Күн бұрын
Paul White should have ended the streak. It wouldn't have hurt goldberg any. But WCW squandered the giant. Instead of building a hulking monster like Andre, they wasted him on Hogan too early in his career, then turned him in to a bumbling goof with no real direction. Though i will say, Vince didn't use him much better.

As someone who was a huge wrestling fan during the first Hogan - Warrior match, stopped watching around 1993 but then came back when the NWO started, even I had completely forgotten about the Hogan - Warrior rematch until I watched your first review of this PPV, nor did I care to watch it when it happened. The Warrior went from this slightly crazy, high energy likeable character to just plain crazy with a dash of insufferability.

Hearing Jericho shout "Help Me" is great. Even as a middle school kid, I always knew that the bad guys needed to get punished in the end. That's why I HATED the NWO. As you pointed our years ago in one video "the NWO got what they deserved......never!" - At least Jericho got punished and came across as a whiney weasel. He has always been one of my favorite wrestlers because you wanted to see him try to get ahead and always fail when he tried to cheat. He was the wrestling personification of "Seinfield/It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"

It's such a weird show. Some good and some absolutely baffling decisions with an iconic entrance set, so much so they basically used it again the following year. I always loved seeing what they did with Halloween Havoc. I liked the 97 set too. So many unnecessary promos and random crap, not sure how they managed to bungle the timing so badly. Goldberg's best match, no doubt. I had a Christ Jericho figure with that attire when I was a kid. I wish Mattel would have made that one when he was in WWE. Jericho and Raven are good together.

It really should've been DDP to end Goldberg's streak. DDP and Goldberg had the superior match, to Nash and Goldberg. Nash didn't need the win. But bc he was the booker, Nash couldn't help himself. So naturally he gave himself the win. It's all about giving the right guy the victory. I thought WWE messed up even worse. When they had Brock Lesnar end undertaker's streak. Depending on who you believe, Vince said Brock winning was always the plan. Lesnar said he wasn't supposed to win. Lesnar called an audible, when he noticed undertaker was concussed. Bc he knows undertaker would gut it out to give fans our 💰 worth. I respect that about Mark, I don't want him, or anyone risking serious injury and health to give us our 💰 worth.

A group of friends and I watched this show in October. One of them is very new to wrestling, but one thing he said was that he’d heard good things about the Ultimate Warrior (trust me, we were quick to correct him on that). This was the first Ultimate Warrior match he ever saw, and it’s one of the worst matches of all time… yeah, not sure of his opinion on Warrior now, but I feel like those “good things,” he’s heard may have been ill judged.

Warrior worked in the WWF. He came in like a ball of energy, squashed his opponent in quick fashion, and got out of the ring before that excitement faded. It worked well at the time and watching some of those matches now, I think it still kind of works. He was exposed in his longer matches but with the right opponents, there were still a few good Warrior matches.

1998, the last year that WCW was competent and still a true competitor to the WWF. Shout out to Reliving the War for giving me, someone who started watching wrestling in 1999 fully, a perspective on this year but while there were problems, WCW still produced some great television. 1999 is when they hit the iceberg and 2000 is just pure chaos before the final sinking in 2001, so it's always good to go back to a slightly, better time. Although you for sure see throughout the year, and on this show, the flaws that would ultimately kill the company. On your point about the stage/set design I truly feel it is a lost art in wrestling, not just WWE but in AEW as well. The shows all have the same, standard feel and outside of something like Double or Nothing for AEW or Mania for WWE, all the shows are just plain. It's why people went kind of crazy at Clash at the Castle last year for the big castle thing, like it's something different at a big non-Mania and non-Saudi show. Guess at 32 I've gotten old enough to really be nostalgic about things like set designs in wrestling; kids these days will never know the hype of the Halloween Havoc sets or the swinging hook set of the old Backlash shows.

By the time of this pay-per-view Chris Jericho had already beaten Goldberg.

As far as betrayals go, I think Rey is on a mission to beat Sting's record at this point. Seriously, how many times has Rey been betrayed?

I remember watching this live on ppv. My dad and I sat in complete shock that the feed cut off and we didn't see the main event live.

Great review , I think the reversal of the Jackhammer is one of the most memorable reversals in wrestling for me , huge pop from the crowd ! This has to be in the top 5 Goldberg matches

It would have been hilarious if, in a shout out to the show itself, the KZbin video cut out RIGHT when he started talking about DDP v. Goldberg

If you ever decide occasionally re-reviewing older eps (esp back in your early days when it was 4 stars and you refused to give "negative stars" at the time) I would love to see some of those-but either way you do such awesome work on the channel thank you so much for your work :)

Hey! You've been a big inspiration to me for years and I'm currently making my first wrestling KZbin video. It really sucks to hear about the copywrite strikes. Do you have any advice for me about what to avoid? I have some 5 second clips of different matches/entrances (muted) with my commentary over them. Do you think my video get taken down for this? I'd love for you to see the finished product so I'll tag you in my comments once it's published.

5 seconds is too much! Really you should be shooting for no more than 3 seconds per clip to be safe! Best of luck to ya!

Honestly the match against DDP was the best match of Goldberg's career and I think Brian is right, it would have been the time to end the streak.

I remember at this time thinking how cool a match between Bret and Sting could be because it'd really say who had the better version of that submission, but even at 9 years old I didn't quite trust WCW to do it right. I don't think I watched this ppv, but I do recall the talk at school basically confirming my fears.

It's shocking how badly they botched bret hart in wcw. One of the many things that makes it hard to believe there wasn't some level of deliberate sabataging of the product. It's soooooo bad and so inexplicably shit and illogical, nearly impossible to believe it isn't intentional
