Having grown up in Scotland as well as being to this loch, I can say that the hill on the left hand side (if you are on the north side looking south) is actually where the filming occurred for the Prisoner of Azkaban when Buckbeak and Harry fly over the loch. Yes I know that this isn't as much cannon as the books but it is the most likely location. Also, all of the Scottish names were pronounced correctly :)

Cairngorms local here! "Cairngorms": said as it's written. "Cairn" with the "air" as in air we breathe. "gorms" like "storms". "Ben MacDuibh" was spot-on 👌 "Loch an Eilean": "Eil" is pronounced like "ale", and "ean" is just "en" as in "given". "Glenbuchat Castle": the "buchat" is pronounced almost like "bucket", but with a gutteral "ch" like "loch". (All this said, Scots Gaelic has a bajillion dialects with different pronunciations, so anything can be right really lol) Great video as always :-)

Ok, J, for the sake of us history buffs, and also of Shadiversity, I must protest your ridiculing of the castle at 8:00, Glenbuchat Castle. By the standards of medieval castles that is a fairly good sized castle, and it even has a good few windows and more than two floors. That's a pretty expensive place for the time period. Compared to some of the castles of the same age in England and France, that's actually a very nice castle. Most were just towers with a few rooms. This one looks like it actually has a good bit of space. The other larger ones you showed were made much later, when people actually built castles as houses (or should I say mansions) to live in, not just outposts to keep an eye on lands around the kingdom. Finally, I must point out, that, despite its state of ruin, it has one very important feature that proves that it is a castle: MACHICOLATIONS!!!!

And for those of us americans that have never seen a castle, I looked up the definition of machicolation: "an opening between the supporting corbels of a projecting parapet or the vault of a gate, through which stones or burning objects could be dropped on attackers." And in my own words after looking at pictures: normally the top floor of a tower extends out a bit around the edges and has holes in the floor that they could drop dangerous objects through to hurt people. The holes are the machicolations. Okay, did I get that right?

In such a case the tower is usually a place of habitation, and not defense. Those with the holes are usually set around the perimeter of a castle wall and also above the gate.

I always thought that Hogwarts was sitting on Loch Ness. There is a somewhat rundown and ruined castle on the edge of the Loch. The Legend of the Loch Ness Monster, could just be the giant squid. It is reasonably in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by hills and wooded areas. The place is absolutely huge so the quiddich pitch and greenhouses ect would easily fit. The village/town that is relatively close by would be a good candidate for Hogsmede. Plus the sheer size of the Loch would be a perfect fit for the first years and their traditional boat ride to the castle. It would give all of the older students time to get to the castle in the carriages, while the first years got across the loch. I could be very wrong, but I feel that J.K.ROWLING had Loch Ness in mind when writing the books.

This got me thinking, as a Scandinavian this map shows Durmstrang appearing along southern Finland, Estonia or Latvia. It's described as being in the far northern Europe, and Several times been hinted at as being in Scandinavia. However in terms of how the movies portray the people it does seem like it hints at it being more eastern. Additionally what doesn't make sense to me is what language is education in the schools when there are some many different languages in Europe? Like Scandinavians can understand each other after some practice, but a Norwegian would have a hard time understanding Estonian, and not only that they'd have an easier time with English and travelling to Scotland. So what gives Rowling? How is Durmstrang so diverse where language almost always is gonna be a problem with such a wide range of areas it probably has to cover, and why is Hogwarts so restricted that only people from the UK attends it?

Because Hogwarts is allowed for muggleborns and half breeds. However Durmstrang is not the same, they only seem to allow students who are pure-blood or half-blood. Hogwarts seems to only admit students from UK because there other wizarding schools around the globe

Cairngorms Cairn - Pronounced like "Cane" with a r before the n gorms - pronounced as "Gawrms" Funnily enough though, you are actually spot on 100% perfect with the pronunciation of Ben Macdui. Even most Scottish people can't work that one out D:

That equates (9 hours) to about a 750-mile trip maximum!
