In the case of Muggle-born children, a teacher from Hogwarts personally visited the family to give them the big magic reveal. Harry was an odd case; his family knew about magic but kept the truth from him, so when it was clear that no reply letter was forthcoming by the deadline, Hagrid was permitted to meet him. I also like to think that Dumbledore had a wee bit too much fun with the letters.

I think the answer to the last question about muggles getting their Hogwarts letter in person refers to when Snape explains this to Lily in a flashback in book 7 and tells her that someone will be delivering her acceptance letter in person because she’s muggle born (and so they can explain to her parents that she’s a witch).

Yes. I also think at some point Hermione tells Harry and Ron that someone from the school came to talk to her parents in person. Harry was sent a letter because it was assumed he knew all about the magical community and Hogwarts, Hagrid was very surprised to find out he didn't know.

Pewter has a melting point of 170 - 230°C so yes it is considered softer than other metals (i.e. copper: 1084°C; aluminum: 660°C; carbon steel: 1425 - 1540°C; brass: 930°C; cast iron: 1204°C; stainless steel: 1375 - 1530°C) but I assume that's because first years would not be brewing anything that requires extreme high heat or sustained heating.
@speculativemusings3593
@speculativemusings3593 2 жыл бұрын
About the pewter cauldrons: they actually explain this factor in the books! Why else is the thickness of cauldron bottoms so important? Every metal has a point of thickness at which it becomes pliable, but each one is different! How else could you have wires, platings, and statues made from the same materials?
@lajvanegmond
@lajvanegmond 2 жыл бұрын
j is right pewter consist mostly of tin and has a low meltingpoint, 170-230 °C (338-446 °F). a woodfire in a grate could reach 500 °C (932 F). a gasflame as used in your chemistry lessons at school gets around 300 °C.(572 F). so pewter on a Fire is indeed useless. it should be copper or brass (melting point around 1000 °C (1832 F)
@speculativemusings3593
@speculativemusings3593 2 жыл бұрын
@@lajvanegmond Huh, I did not know that. Looking further into it, turns out that we muggles mainly use pewter for either decorative or utilitarian items, mainly because if it broke, it was easier to melt down the pieces and remake it. Real pewter of the kind they used in the medieval times usually had a high lead content, which tended to cause lead-poisoning. I’ll say a few things with regard to its use here: 1) They’ve got magic, so the health concerns are likely countered by something we don’t see. Maybe they’re just immune? 2) Neville often screws up his potions, and one of those screw-ups is melting through the bottoms of his cauldrons. This means that accurate temperature maintenance is a factor in potion making. Magical fires probably help with that. 3) We later see other types of cauldrons- gold, silver, brass, copper, iron, fire crab shell, etc. We even hear tell of a failed attempt at a cheese cauldron. This implies that specific types were used with specific potions. Historically IRL, pewter was considered highly conductive for magic, while iron was almost anti-magic. So pewter would be useful for low magic individuals or ingredients, while iron is probably reserved for magically potent ingredients that could be highly reactive. As such, pewter’s use in cauldrons for first years, who likely can’t channel much magic yet, can’t be trusted with high heat flames, and who may accidentally destroy their cauldrons, is probably justified.

The last question. Usually for Muggleborns they have a member of staff deliver the letter in person so the parents can have the situation explained to them, and to have people on hand to alter memories should there be negative reception, considering it's revealing the magical world to muggles which may violate the statute of secrecy. Edit: I think the reason harry was an exception is because the Dursleys already knew about magic, even though they disliked it, they were aware of it because of Dumbledore's letter and Petunia's family.

Marge ate a funny whelk, its a sea snail you can buy and eat, they can be sold everywhere but most common is on the English coast. She was holidaying on the Isle of White which is a small island of the southern coast, made up of primarily coastlines. Its very plausible she ate it a few days before sending the postcard and was still feeling the ill effects but not as bad, we British people like sharing the misery especially if it had ruined our fun. She probably only went for the weekend so she may of been ill most of her time there so people had to know about it, Vernon, Petunia, Dudley and even the postman. :)

An even higher magic setting would be more akin to sci-fi for them. On the contrary however, they are EXTREMELY behind in technology. I didn't remember the answer from the books, but just thinking about it logically, it makes perfect sense. A wizarding family (or the unusual case of the Dursleys) only needs an owl because they already know what's up, while a muggle family would have no idea what to make of the letter and probably assume it's a hoax, so a staff member goes in person to explain everything.

Love how everyone cites Snape telling Lily someone will come and explain to her parents about magic and Hogwarts as the most explicit source of the standard procedure with children brought up by muggles. It's not like we actually saw Dumbledore doing exactly that with young Tom Riddle xD

I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere (whether in one of the books or on Pottermore) that McGonagall delivered Hogwarts letters to muggleborns to explain to the parents about magic. Thats also why Dumbledore went to meet Tom Riddle in the orphanage.

I think funeral home is actually a good business front for money laundering because the services and prices are not only not standardized, they are famously highly priced up and remain quite cash-based despite the rise of other payment options. And it won't be easily discovered since people don't usually ask or talk about how much funerary services cost. Almost no one price shops for that. It's the kind of thing only the most finance-savvy people even think about. The biggest issue might be the interval between clients though... (lol that sounds so ominous)

Nope Like hagrid says, Harry's name has been in the book of acceptance since the day he was born He got the letter because hogwarts knew his autny and uncle knew about the wizarding world and wouldn't need it explaining to them unlike a muggleborn who would get a teacher to show them diagon alley and explain everything (just like what hagrid did)

I have been listening to the audiobooks on repeat for a few months… I can finish all seven books in a week, which is 100 hours worth (youtube video version). I got a hundred percent, I did notice that the were basically questions about Diagon Ally shop. They didn’t ask the question about “what colour are the fastenings on the winter coats, only mentioned in the first letter. Tip Toe through the Tulips was my answer before they even received multiple choices answers.

I think for the question about how muggleborns get letters, the assumption was that Harry knew about magic already. Hagrid certainly seemed to think he did, and even if he didn’t, the Dursleys still did, so it would understandable to set an owl.

About the delivery of the letter for muggle-born students, I think Harry got owl post because he wasn't muggle-born, plain and easy, and it's an automagic system. Hagrid was sent last minute because Harry wasn't receiving his letters and Dumbledore's plan relied on Harry going to Hogwarts.

Little fact. Pewter has a melting Point of ~170 - 230 °C while charcoal or wood burning produces a heat of about 1000°C. The cauldron would probably melt instantly. Though there may be some enchantments placed on it to make it more resistant to heat.
