You’re edits for comedic pause had me rolling. I’m a music artist but I love video games. I didn’t waste any time giving my money to play this early. The graphics are amazing and the scale of the castle and the beauty of the architecture in the other dimensions you end up in is astounding and honestly competes with other popular triple a games. You don’t necessarily have to be a fan of the Harry Potter world to love this game, this game literally has it all! If you’re like me and ignore alot of the notifications on your screen regarding misc. items- MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR CHALLENGES! You can gain access to some really cool gear. !SLIGHT SPOILERS! (Not towards major storyline arcs) I was absolutely astounded to find that you can literally use the room of requirement as basically a house. It has INSANELY DETAILED customization. Between changing each individual wall, door, balcony, furniture style, color size. BUT WAIT- What if I told you, they basically have a COMPLETE pet system. That’s all I’ll say. You’ll find out!

Some aspects of the setting will probably fall short if you haven't either watched the movies or read the books, and i do wish it had a bit of a codex that explained the setting, but i think even someone new to the setting will get a hang of it real quick =)

I’m sorry-I genuinely don’t want to cause a fight here, but I have to object. I respect that Harry Potter was important to you growing up, but that doesn’t give you the right to turn a blind eye to the harm that JK has caused (and that this game continues to cause). This franchise consistently uses historically oppressed and minority groups as fodder, using harmful stereotypes and pushing them down to elevate itself. Rowling continuing to push transphobic ideology is the easiest and loudest example, but it is not the extent of it. There’s content in the game aligning the franchise’s goblins with the Jewish people (in addition to the many harmful Jewish stereotypes already stuck onto goblins in Harry Potter). Non-white-British characters are consistently boiled down to the barest stereotypes (Cho Chang, Seamus Finnegan, etc.) You can’t separate a piece of media from its politics, they’re baked into the thing. By trying to ignore the ‘controversy’, you are complicit in the harm it does, and in supporting the kind of people who are willing to put these kinds of harmful ideas out into the world.

Rowling is an idiot, and the fantasy world she created is great and ripe for creative exploration by others. Second, this game was not made by Rowling, and is not encouraging those harmful stereotypes in itself. Truth is, you're not arguing with your actual enemy or helping your cause, because "not playing this game" doesn't actually help address the cause of the social issues you're concerned about. You're just telling people that something important and precious to them - for reasons *completely* independent from Rowling's behavior - actually endorse Rowling's behavior without them knowing it. This is called "lateral violence", and will only result in building sympathies from groups otherwise supportive of your cause against you, and distract from the meaningful changes that need to happen. Nobody here is defending Rowling's behavior. Reserve your energy for fighting in the areas where genuinely racist ideas emerge from - try to find out where Rowling got those ideas - and against government policies in your community that support ongoing oppression of these people.

Re: stereotypes, there is direct reference to a Goblin rebellion said to have taken place in 1612, and a horn that belonged to them. This is an allusion to a Jewish revolt in the face of oppression that took place in real life in 1612, and the horn’s art is very similar to the Jewish shofar. Despite Rowling’s hands not having touched the game, her antisemitic messaging has survived. There is also a Ugandan transfer student who goes by Natty (similar to ‘nappy’, used to negatively refer to black women’s hair), and to whom the player character can comment “Surely magic is weaker over there”. There is **also** a trans woman named Sirono Ryan, the naming having caught flak because of the “Sir” and traditionally masculine interpretation of the name Ryan (granted at face value this feels weaker, Sirono is indeed a feminine name, but we all know how the franchise likes its painfully obvious and/or reductive names). I recognize that this franchise is important to people, but it continues to fail, and it continues to generate revenue and a platform for Rowling. Separating the art and the artist is an idea that holds merit, but it’s rarely so simple, and it’s not in this case when she continues to profit from the franchise, and the franchise itself still aligns with her own messages. **The truth** is that I’m confronting people with the fact that their actions have wider consequences than they’re willing to admit, and trying to ignore those consequences does not absolve them. There’s been multiple comments expressing relief at the idea of focusing on the game rather than the “controversy”. That’s the very problem-if we **don’t** talk about the harm this kind of stuff causes, then people will find spaces where it’s safe to just quietly ignore the harm that’s being done.
