It would be great to see a review of the differences between the Hoka trail line up. 👌🏼 so many options 🙈

Texas runner who did Bandera 100k and Grasslands marathon in these shoes. Very different terrain for those races but the shoes performed well in each case. Ethan is right about break-in ... I had toe bleed at Bandera from shoe wear but honestly didn’t notice it until the finish. Now they are exceptionally comfortable and my go-to trail racers, currently with about 200 miles of use

Great review! I've run 180 km with them and I 100% agree. The adaptation time is not a great deal if you don't compete with them and they are very comfortable since the beginning. But I'm a bit biased since these are my favourite trail running shoes.

Really pleased to hear about a more adaptive fit on Hoka model! Also Hoka's colorways have just been incredible in the last years. Consistently the best color and design in the industry IMO.

My first pair lasted 735K. I've got a second pair and will probably stick to the model for now. Totally agree with dislikes - took me one week (70K) to break and it's heavy... After breaking, it's really comfortable and an amazing fit for highly technical trails.

Interesting shoe....hope to revisit this shoe in maybe 2 or 3 years....I like the fade off sunset (color) The EVO was a good fit but I usually go back to my Goats for WA area runs.

Glad HOKA fixed the upper mid section from the Speed 2. I had to return mine right away because of the lacing system. I’ve now had the Mafate Speed 3 and the Evo Mafate 2. Both amazing shoes, but the inside of the Evo 2’s is softer, so I’ll likely stick to those (plus the lower price now).

Update… Good news! Hoka gave me a choice to replace the same shoe or choose another. I went with EVO Speedgoat for different sole construction. Needed to pay a little difference for this higher priced model. Thank you Hoka, good customer service from my perspective. 2021 Mafate One One Speed 3, Less then 20 kilometers in 3 trail runs and sole cracked in forefoot area. Specifically inside the deep groove which allows sole to flex laterally. Cannot post photos here so hope this description helps. Took shoes back to retailer who said they would send to distributor for warranty evaluation. Waiting. Hoka warranty is 1 year and if they agree with your claim offer a credit for another Hoka product.

Thank you so much for this review, I am in Australia so import tax is a little high but I managed to get a pair they added free shipping plus 10% off so in US dollars that's about $145 it actually worked out cheaper than the speedgoat 4's I was looking at, thanks for helping me decide. Now to start training from road running to trail.

The Evo Mafate 2 is my goto Trail shoe for any distance. Planning on running Cascade Crest this summer in the shoe. The $170 price point was initially intimidating, but after giving it a shot after using a 20% off REI coupon, I wouldn't hesitate to spend the money on my next pair. I've probably put 300-400 miles in them and they are still working great! That being said, based on the review, looks like I'd still lean to the Evo over the Speed. Another call out with the flexible upper, is that it is very forgiving as your foot swells some during ultras.

just bought speedgoat. And I see your point about the fit. Speedgoat has durable but not stretchy body material, so it makes not good looking wrinkles when you tight it up
@JavierISampedroTNF3 жыл бұрын
These look sweet and I know few people who have bought them. After have used the Speedgoat 3 and currently using Torrent 2, I am intrigued. I did not have complaints at all for the width while using those other Hoka models, but is good to have a roomier option for technical trails. Maybe if the price drops in the coming months :)

Thanks for the great reviews! I have been watching a long time and I try not to miss one. Love the new "Shoe Showcase in the Wild" at the start. I am interested to try these and the EVO Mafate 2. I already have the Torrent and the EVO Speedgoat and like the Torrent, love the EVO Speedgoat and think I would go with the EVO Mafate 2 over these if I was buying a third pair of trail shoes. Hoka seems to work for me so I am not messing with the good thing I have going!

Did you find yourself buying the same size in Speed 3 as you did in Evo Mafate 2? (I sized down a 1/2 size in the latter compared to most other shoes). I'm waaay behind and just learning no more Mafate 2s available. Tears.Thanks for a helpful review!

I guess after your review and few comments below, I will give a chance to EVO 2..

Thanks for your review! Never warmed up to the Mafate Speed 2 even after the lengthy and unpleasant break-in period. The Evo Mafate 2 is better in every respect. The weight of the Mafate Speed is noticeable. Yet the Craft CTM Carbon Ultra is vastly preferable to the Evo Mafate 2 on more buffed trails and asphalt, especially for 100 K and longer distances; the Hokas do better on more technical trails and less than 100 K.

My favorite trail shoes ever are the EVO Mafate 2. Can't get them anymore, at least not in my size. Will the additional weight of the Speed 3 be awful? One of the great things about the Evo Mafate 2 is how much shoe you get for the weight. I've done 3 100's in them and never been disappointed or felt like I needed a shoe change mid race. Just did a hard mountain 50 in them a couple weeks back and they were awesome there as well. UTMB coming in 4 weeks. Do I just roll with my my last pair of Evo 2's that have 200+ miles on them? Or take a chance on the Speed 3? The pair I have still feels pretty good underfoot, though the traction isn't what it used to be.

Hoka are rocking some bold colours a bit like the Saucony Perigrine. Brookes Cascadia looking like possibility for me they don't need breaking in and nice uppers. A rotation segment on trail shoes would be a good video (hint!) BTW - Ethan I just downloaded GR tracks from for running music - my favs Stow Away, Slop Wash - sounds great with John Digweed Quattro II album if like you techno flavours.

Ethan, I appreciate this review. My question is where does the Evo Speedgoat fall into your analysis. It’s got the stretchy vamp which helps with width that’s lacking in the Speedgoats, 5mm lugs, tough upper, and it’s a lot lighter than this Mafate Speed 3. Anyway, just wondering your thoughts on it. Thanks, as always, for your in-depth analysis.

Right now I’m stuck waiting in hopes the Speedgoat 5 is better than 4 (cut weight slightly & more comfortable upper please) or an EVO Speedgoat 2 or just buying another another pair of the og EVO SGs. Just curious are you testing the Nike Terra Kiger 7? It sounds like they finally added some cushion to it and I’m curious if it can finally become a long mileage shoe. I need a cushion long mileage shoe to pair with Brooks Catamounts since my EVO SGs midsole died at 300 miles.

Worst Hoka I've ran in for a while, and I'm a Hoka fan. Would discourage anyone with remotely larger than medium width feet to avoid them. The toe box is too narrow and unforgiving. Ran 80k in them, hoping the upper would stretch and adapt, but it wasn't to be.

@Wind Finder I have wide feet. I have the Olympus 4. I was hoping the Speed 3 will work for me. Any tip? I have the 2E Clifton 7 for road. I have been looking for a Hoka trail option to add in my rotation.
@DanCross3 жыл бұрын
@Wind Finder Yep. I've tried various lacing techniques, different socks, even different sizes. Still too narrow in the toe box. I get on perfectly fine in the Speedgoats, Evo Speedgoats and Torrent shoes, but I find the upper (particularly the moulded overlays) not as forgiving/adaptive as suggested.
