I grew up on squirrel. We weren't poor, but my dad was a hunter. You fry it like chicken. (it tastes the same, dark meat. ) Never ate the brain, though. That's odd. A friend of my dad's grew up poor, and he said he ate raccoon often.

Squirrel hunting is a big thing where I live, and people definitely eat squirrel around here. I definitely wasn't even remotely shocked until Jerry mentioned eating the brain, which I think is probably a far less common practice. I don't know that raccoons are quite as common where I live and as much a source of food, but in places where they are, it makes sense that people would eat them since they definitely are an animal that gets hunted.

In West Virginia, there is a squirrel season that is defined by the state DNR. It's always funny when people who don't live in the country find out about stuff like this and are shocked that people who hunt actually eat the food from the animals instead of putting them on a wall somewhere.
