LEAVE THE HORNS!!! I grew up on a dairy farm with many horned cows, with 13 children. Not one child or adult was ever harmed with horns from the cows. But YOU do YOU, and if de-horning is what you feel you need to do, then so be it. These are your critters.

I'm a Certified Veterinary Technician and I currently work with large animal (horses, cattle, llamas, alpacas, pigs, etc) you did a pretty good job. I suggest that your wife or another strong adult pushes her up against a wall with a knee under her ribs so she can't collapse and have one hand holding up her tail and one arm under her jaw to keep her head still (not cutting off the airway). Have her right side up against the wall to do her left horn and then turn her around so her left side is against the wall to take off the right horn. That will help you so much in her not moving around so much while you're doing this procedure. It'll keep you and her safe. Use 2 people if you have to hold her body but please don't have her barely restrained like you had her in this video. Also, you were giving the intramuscular injections too high on the neck. I wish I could post an image to show you exactly where to give the injections (it's easily found in images on Google). This goes the same for horses: give IM injections in the muscular area of the neck it can be drawn into a triangle lower on the neck basically sitting next to the shoulder. Here you have less of a chance of injecting any of the pain meds or vaccines into a vessel, or the jugular. You don't want to go too high and inject anything into the ligaments that support the head and neck. Also, make sure when you push the needle into the muscle of the neck that you aspirate first (pull back on the plunger) check to make sure you are not injecting into a vessel because it can be deadly to give certain medications into a vein or artery. How you know you're in a vessel is when you see blood draw into the syringe. If you do get blood, relax the tension on the plunger, pull completely out of the muscle, go to another spot on the neck in the triangle zone and repeat. If you don't get blood, then you may inject. These are very important things that the vet should've gone over with you but a lot of vets don't want to wate their time so they'll omit these details which are so important. I hope this helps. Im happy to answer questions if you have them.

Is it painful for the calf?
@therenaissancelass
@therenaissancelass Жыл бұрын
@@soaringkite2673 as long as the nerves are blocked by the lidocaine properly the calf shouldn't feel a thing. When the lidocaine (numbing agent) wears off, yes she will be very sore, but that's what the pain medication that they're giving her is for. However, at many large facilities/farms, they deorn and castrate their calves very early in life and the farmers don't have the money or time to perform nerve blocks on all their calves. The reality for most farms is to dehorn and castrate at the same time without any sedation, nerve blocking or post op pain meds. That's how it's been for 100's of years. And yes, the farmers have been trained by their grandparents and parents who were at some point trained by a vet to perform dehornings and castrations themselves.

I recall my Grandfather being so upset that he lost one of his good milkers. He said that she got her horn caught in the fencing and because of the rain at the time, she slipped on the wet while trying to get loose and broke her leg. If he was still around today, he would be the first to tell you to dehorn your cows.

I know the same is usually done with goats. We had a ram that was super friendly then seemingly out of nowhere started ramming us, so glad he didn't have any horns or we would have gotten hurt and I have a kid that helps with chores. Don't even want to imagine what could've happened.

Dehorning was my task as a young kid growing up on the farm, we would work 15 to 20 calves at a time and I had a tool that would be more akin to a large pair of nail clippers, and it was clip clip and a little bit of abc powder to cauterize the area. The larger calves that we would buy at market would get pine tar poured over it. I know it sounds awful but it was quick and they recover a lot faster than you think. Things are obviously a lot more modern and humane now. Good job on getting that done quickly and as painless as possible.

In my opinion the fact she didn't react in pain, when the area she was operated on was numbed, isnt something you can go off of. The moment the anesthesia wears off, it'll hurt and she'll feel it. As long as it doesn't affect her life in the long run any bad way it's not that bad. Example for when it doesn't hurt while the procedure but does afterwards: declawing a cat. Declawing a cat is where you remove the last knuckle in all their paws. The procedure itself doesn't hurt as the cat is under anesthesia. But afterwards it hurts them to walk. They develop a lot of behavioural issues, and result to biting since they can't use their paws. And they most of the time stop using the litter box since the sand hurts their feet. Like sure, removing their toes doesn't hurt while they're under medication and knocked out, but it sure hurts the moment that medication wears off. Edit: forgot something. I get the reason they did what they did. And they can't reverse it now. Plus if it doesn't affect her in any way as she grows than it's not that bad. I get the need to protect your family, especially with all the children. But I think from now on they should just try to get a cow without horns and breed it only. Instead of breeding cows with horns and then dehorning their calfs. Like one dolly is back have her be their main milk source and breeder since the chance her calfs would have horns is lower.

@Zohar Harel when I stated she didn't make noise, I meant because she was numb from the drugs. I understand that there would be discomfort afterward. There is in most procedures. However, in the long run, it is safer for the family and other animals. This is according to much research. Through this research, I also couldn't find long-term effects, unlike your example. It is not the same thing. They're both procedures, but according to your research, it causes the cat long-term issues. Not to mention, if they get outdoors, it's dangerous. You can't say the same thing about what they did with the calf. Research shows that this procedure is a fairly common practice.

I think dehorning makes a lot of practical sense. Yes, it’s difficult to watch, but I think it’s the responsible thing to do. Especially when it comes to the safety of your family. While Poppy definitely seemed uncomfortable with the process, she didn’t seem hurt, and this will be much easier and less traumatic for her at a young age than when the horns would have become a problem in the future.

For cows the horns are part of their digestive system (while the cow is ruminating gasses are transported into the horns) and during the summer the horns are part of the cooling system. Also, de-horned cows seemingly tend to be more agressive.

My grandpa had a dairy farm in Michigan. All of his cows were dehorned! I went there one time during a spring vacation and got sent to the milking parlor to help my uncle Bobby who was dehorning. Not a pretty sight, especially for a young teen girl. But I gutted it out, by letting the cows and heifers in and out of the cages before and after their procedure was done. Made quite the impression on me! But I never questioned why, I presumed even at that age it was the cows safety, the safety of other cows, and the safety of humans working with them.

Mid video watching this, I just wanted to point this out as this is something I got to learn when studying to become a vet assistant. Fur subkutan (under the skin) injections as well as intramuscular ones you want to aspirate the syringe before injecting to make sure you did not hit a blood vessel as that may not give the animal the desired effect of the substance. You want to make sure no blood is entering the syringe when aspirating as this means you hit a blood vessel. There should be only vacuum when aspirating. Just thought I should point that one out

We dehorned our calves on our traditional dairy farm. This was 40 years ago, and I was just a kid. I felt so bad for the calves because they didn't get any lidocaine or pain meds. I guess back then, maybe that wasn't normal practice - I'm not sure...? Good for you for taking the extra steps. I don't believe she felt much pain because she didn't make any noise of being in pain. She may have felt slight pain but mostly likely nervous/scare. This is just my opinion from watching hundreds of calves in this situation. I personally have been injected with lidocaine many times, and it's best to go slow. It is very painful when it is injected quickly. I'm sure she will forget the experience in time just because you guys are very caring to all your animals. You will win her trust back. Good luck and God bless!

I remember mazy had the same breeding issues. Could it be genetic that they arent able to be bred all that well. Maybe think about starting all over with some new dairy cattle. I know thats easier said then done but it would also be more efficient in the long run

That was a bit freaky but I’m sure it will work , we use the paste just scratch back the bud then apply the paste and done . The chemical concentrates on the horn and not the tissue . That burn tool is definitely something to use when the calf is way more secured then a rope in a wide pen , but every farmer learns by trial and error .

We had goats that we a local rancher dehorn for us. One of them had a horn grow back. Sadly we had to get rid of her because she would corner my young kiddos and it became dangerous. She went to a goat farm where she gave birth to multiple kids!

I love the fact that you are all so concerned about your animal's! I know you would alway's do your best not to cause any of your animal's pain! And anyone watching your Video's would see this! Somrtime's you have to cause pain when there is a procedure that has to be done! Just like when we take our children to the doctor and they get a shot or take care of a wound they may of gotten. I think you are doing your best to take care Of all your children and your animals!!! You can never please everyone!!! 🤗

You are right not to get a bull, we have had them my whole life, usually for 5-6 years per bull. They get daily handling all winter and visited every day in summer, so are civil. We had one who was very docile and he turned aggressive over the course of a few days after having him several years with no issues. We had to load him into a trailer by herding with vehicles. Really really sad but a story I have heard a few times.

I was nervous upon opening this video, because I have seen some very cruel practices... But the fact that you numbed the area and did it as quick and painless as possible makes it so much easier to accept. Knowing that doing so is an option (and wanting to have a sustainable homestead, in the future) I think I would go for this as well.

You did what you had to do. As a retired doctor’s wife and someone who has worked in medicine for 50 years, I think you did a very good job. We don’t want to hurt our animals, nor do we want to be hurt by them. By doing the dehorning, you saved a lot of worry and potential injury.

First I want to say that I am not experienced with raising cattle at all. Despite that, I wanted to share my experience with Bulls. When I was a teenager my friend and I were out at a deer lease with her family and it also happened to be a ranch with cattle as well. The two of us went out to one of the deer blinds to sit and wait to see if we could see some deer. Being teenagers we eventually got bored so we decided to play a little game of toss the football. It was a small pink and black nerd ball. Anywho, as we were playing the herd of cows came into the area we were in a long with the big Bull. Now, you can imagine that we got a little worried since we were tossing a pink and black ball around, but that Bull was super sweet. He just wanted to see what we were doing and then get pets. It was amazing! Something I will always remember. My second experience was walking through a field with cattle that was in-between my house and my friend's house (same friend by the way). The Bull in that herd never even tried to run us off or chase us in any way. Another cool encounter with a Bull. Now I am not saying get a Bull or that all of them are going to be like those two. Consider though that not all Bulls are mean and some of them are total sweethearts. Just wanted to share that with you. Love your videos and all the things you share with us. I hope you all are well.

Dehorning is all and good, but that neck position isn't. Che calf could injure itself by pulling on the rope and bending its head like that. Plus that rope around its belly was too thin- it should have been some kind of a belt.

Growing up on my grandfather’s dairy farm in Ireland, I remember this happening en mass.Because we were all kids at the time, I think the first time I remember it happening, I must have been around 6 years old, we were banned from going to the farm altogether! My grandfather didn’t want us to see what was happening and I am pretty sure that he just didn’t want to traumatise us! We spent so much time with the calves, and seeing a freaked out calf while they use that machine on their tiny horns, it can be confusing to a little kid I guess! You see, we had never been banned from the farm before, so we just had to know what was going on! Of course we snuck out of the house and hid behind some bales of hay! Yeah, I absolutely regretted watching that! Even now, my heart has a really hard time watching animals in pain! We had all sorts of questions after seeing 2 calves being done. 2 calves were enough for us! In regards to what I think about you doing it, - I’m afraid I think that it is a necessity. You are a farmer/homesteader, if all of your cattle had horns, that has the potential for being incredibly dangerous for you and your family. I love cows, adore them and I know that they can be the most gentle, sweet creatures in the world. However, even the sweetest cow can get cranky, or scared, they are going to use whatever they have to get themselves out of a situation they don’t like or one where they don’t feel safe, even if it means pushing you out of the way with those horns. They don’t know that they could kill the person that feeds them, they only know that at that exact moment, they feel threatened for some reason and they are going to do whatever it takes to get away from what is scaring them. You did the right thing, but if it was me, I would do anything to get the vet to do it in future!

Most people don't understand the problem with horns. A broken horn can cause a cow to bleed to death. In beef cattle, the horns can bruise and ruin the meat. I want milking goats and want them dehorned. It's better to do it when they are young, but I was involved with a dehorning on angus beef cattle. It really wasn't terrible even though the horns were starting to grow out.
