What you daw was zenitsu's real power. He might be over dramatic but he said that he did some hellish training. When he sleep he doesn't feel fear and his muscle memory plus his super hearing react for him and destroy any enemy that try to attack him while asleep. He's jot a coward he doesn't believe of what he can do

Zenitsu doesn't have a split personality. It's just that in his sleep-mode, fear doesn't exist as it's an emotion that only works on an awake person. Zenitsu's cowardly behavior doesn't allow him to fight, and the techniques he performs in his sleep-mode are all solely by muscle memory.

I don't think it's a different personality thing, I think it's 'cause he's literally just trained so hard and so much that the moves are ingrained into his body's muscle memory. But he's so convinced that he's weak that he just never realized how effective those moves are. When he's asleep though, he starts sleepwalking.
