The overlooked aspect about this film is that the original 3 were set in the 1930’s and the filmmaking style was based on the adventure serials of that period, while this is set in 1957 and based on the science fiction pulp style of that period. This went right over most viewers heads.

Exactly. The originals were an homage to the pulp action movies of the 40's and took inspiration from them. This took inspiration from the B grade sci fi movies of the 50's, hence the aliens. I liked it except for Shia in there as Indy's son. I remember seeing rumors of Natalie Portman being his daughter and I think that would have been a lot more interesting.

Granted, it has been a long time since I've watched it, but this video served more as a refresher than anything and I can definitely see the film's issues slip through the cracks, but I still find the action entertaining and the acting is very good amongst everyone in the cast and the direction very solid. The story and VFX do leave a lot to be desired admittedly, but even then I don't find the latter that bad tbh. I've seen better VFX in films around the same time, obviously, but it doesn't take me out of the film entirely. So yeah it's not something I'm ashamed of. It's a lot like the star wars prequels for me: something I was engrossed in and watched repeatedly as a kid, grew up and uncovered many of the issues it had that we're talked about by everyone and their mother, but in the end, I don't hold the same opinion because of how much it was influential in my upbringing and what I was introduced to in my youth that made me a fan of that respective franchise.

The back-story of the Indy films is a pretty simple one, but is somehow convoluted to explain. The premise of the stories is based on the popular films at the times the movies are set. The original three films were set in the mid-30s, just prior to WWII really kicking off. Those films were based on the adventure serials of that era. So those three movies were action-adventures with the villains being the Nazis (except for Temple, of course, which is just doing its own thing). This movie is set in the late '50s, at the height of both the Cold War and sci-fi films, like "Them" with giant insects, and "Godzilla," both results from atomic testing, and a version of "War of the Worlds," so this Indy film, like the others, is a product of its setting, focusing on the sci-fi elements with the Soviets as the bad guys. It really does make sense, even if the results aren't to everyone's tastes.

It always confused me why people didn't like the alien angle. It suited the setting and the time period and the is no more outlandish a macguffin than the supernatural artifacts of the previous films. Overall I think the first half of the movie is great. Pretty much everything up to the graveyard is awesome and then it kinda falls apart in the jungle. Those vfx shots were weirdly poor considering it was ILM doing them. I did like the references to the Young Indy Chonicles and Cate Blanchett was fun to watch as she chewed up the scenery. Is it a great movie? No. Is it terrible? Absolutely not. Personally I still like it better than Temple Of Doom,.
@aarons.23232 жыл бұрын
It's not really the alien angle that people didn't like. It's the resolution to the alien thing that sucked. And Shia swinging with monkeys. And the over-reliance on bad CGI (even at the time), and the fridge, and the friend who turns on him that we've never met and have no emotional stakes with, and the old professor that we have never met before that the movie asks us to care about that we just can't. I even remember they went with the "part time" line reading that was inexplicably WAY WORSE than what was in the trailer for the movie. Even something as trivial as that hurts the movie. It asks a lot from its audience, and in the end all anyone could ask was... "Why?" Plus, an earlier draft of this movie reportedly was about the Ark coming back. That would have been much cooler. Instead we got a trope that has been done to death. And they didn't even look original. They were big-eyed grey aliens.

The Love Interest from Film 1 returns in Film 4. The Father/Son dyanmic from Film 3 is continued in Film 4. Indy is betrayed by an ally in Films 1, 3 and 4. Films 1, 3 and 4 take place during War periods aka WW2/Cold War. The Ark is featured in Film 1 and returns in a brief cameo in Film 4. It follows the rules of what a true Third Film should be since technically Last Crusade was the True Sequel aka Number 2. My disappointment with Film 5 when it releases is the fact that a Older Short Round wasn't brought back. Would have been a nice full circle to the Prequel film if Film 5 serves as a true Ending/Epilogue to Indy.

Personally love the alien inclusion. It makes sense, the previous films treated religious objects and basically magic as real things that were lost to history. There are many theories that ancient civilizations were influenced by, had contact with, or believed in aliens. The movie's fictional ancient city of Akator is based on a hoax created by a German. In the 70's, Hans Günther Hauck pretended to be an Indian Chieftain from a hidden city called Akakor (as apposed to Akator). A book about this Chieftain and his story was published before he was exposed as a fraud.

@Infisly_ - Nah. I don't buy it. Ancient stories in a reall life. Sure. Maybe. A lot of data out there in various myths from different cultures. In this movie? A bit of simplification there, but I bet the whole concept of aliens - that was Lucas, and had nothing to do with Spielberg. And this movie don't have the same "feeling" as the previous ones. The idea of aliens, the legend of El Dorado, the return of Indy and Marion, the twist of Mutt’s relationship with Indy, and Irene and the Russians was what I enjoyed about this film. I only wish the cgi would’ve been better and placed properly. I wish the story would’ve been better written and in depth. For example, they could’ve given more details of Oxley and Indy’s friendship other than they were colleagues, they could’ve had an additional scene between Indy and Marion discussing about their relationship now that Mutt’s been revealed to have been Indy’s son, and that at the wedding, they should’ve made the kiss passionate and not like “I’m marrying Indy and forget Collins.” If you’d like more adventure films, I recommend Dreamwork’s The Road to El Dorado, Finding Ohana, The Goonies, National Treasure 1-2, and Cutthroat Island.

Shia LaBeouf has actually been in some really interesting stuff recently and I think he's a pretty darn good actor. The Peanut Butter Falcon is one of those that I would recommend you see.

When I was in high school, I worked as an usher at the local theater. Hearing the reactions from people coming out of this one was pricless.

I actually thought Shia's little journey was fascinating lol I'll never forget that thing he did where we all just watched him watch his old movies. Weird experiment but it was very cool lmao

So, Shia in movies is interesting... I often think of things like I.Robot or Constantine, where he is a supporting character. I enjoy both of those movies. one where he is more central to the story which I highly recommend is Honey Boy... It's kinda about his life and it's pretty interesting.

3:42 Jim Broadbent played Danny's father in Hot Fuzz. He's also Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

If you watch Star Wars Rebels there is a character that basically looks like Cate Blanchetts character in this movie. I like to think that at the end of the movie the aliens just took her to the Star wars universe.

I think Shia is on the path back from his so called "weirdness". A recent movie of his that's really good is The Peanut Butter Falcon! Highly recommend it if you haven't already seen it. Also, if I had to guess why they do the splatter on the lense effects so often, I'm guessing it's because this was at the time when 3D movies became super popular in theaters.

I totally forgot that Jim Broadbent was in this. He played Horace Slughorn (the professor who disguised himself as a chair) in Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince.

Frank Darabont wrote a draft called City of the Gods which was better in many ways. Also worth noting that early in the writing process it was Indy’s daughter, not a son. The daughter, Rachel, had already been seen grown up “present day” on the TV show. I hope they put her in the next one.

Sean Connery had retired from acting by the time this instalment was made, so it was going to be near impossible to get him back.

I feel it was the particle sims they used to help merge practical fore and digital back-ground. Dust mist smoke... Felt it was just dropped/layered it on. To help cover cg in bckground that rarely protruded into the practical scenes, a side effect border that they had to blend with more dust smoke mist sims on top of the practical scenes that stood out throwing the intended blending effect into an effect that highlights the undersaturated border between them. Constant lense flares having to include the 'makeup' particles for continuity stood out on the slightly darker colour grading. Cg wasnt overall bad for the time, it was just rough comping of the two i reckon.

I mean considering that they jumped from a plane on an inflatable raft, went down a mountain and ended up in a river. Crazy luck is all part of the franchise. However rewatching it again with you guys, I certainly like it more than I remember liking it. Shia's movie Peanut Butter Flacon is also amazing and made me respect the hell out of him as an actor.
