There is a scene where Brandon Routh's Superman is looking around the ruins of Krypton that was cut from the start of the movie. They should have left that scene in. It would have been a great start to the movie.

Holden, it’s been established in comics that Superman possess a kind of bio-field that he can extend around people and objects this is why he a regular human can fly w/ him and breathe, not freeze and why massive objects like ships and submarines don’t tear apart when he’s lifting them. I don’t know if this has been retconned away but I always thought it was a great comic book reason that supported the science/biology of Superman.

I think it was a mistake not to use him further. I know Lex was integral to the plot, but I would have liked to have seen him with the other heroes, instead of Lex. We saw so much of Lex before that, and after that in the Supergirl show, that I just kinda got burned out on Lex Luthor, even before the show (and the Arrowverse) began to severely decay. Especially since he was so different than the 'regular' Superman on the shows. It was crazy to see how much more powerful he was, and that he probably would have killed the other Clark if Lois wasn't there. And now with the whole mess with HBO, they have this perfect medium with which to do a miniseries with him, and they're doing nothing with it. It just sucks.

I like that Kevin Spacey plays Lex mostly on the "always thinking and calculating" side of his personality. They very easily could have had Lex get angry or freak out when they told him Boris got hit with the piano. But he instantly started calculating the meaning of what they said rather than spontaneously react. And then very calmly say "Oh, we've got to go." with just a small, tiny hint of panic.

TRIVIA: The older lady that passes at the beginning of the film is Noel Neill, who was the original Lois Lane from both the radio show and The Adventures of Superman TV series. The radio show and TV series is where the "It's a bird, it's a plane..." phrase came from. I think Routh did a fine job as Clark/Superman, under what would have been so much pressure to take on this role. Of all the issues I have with this film, he's not one of them.

they did a fantastic job giving the feel of the original superman movies to me. brandon routh was an incredible stand in for christopher reeves. i say stand in because that seems to be their intent. Cavill got his own superman, routh was meant to be reeves. Like holden said, they tried to modernize it. I suppose the easiest way to reconcile the continuity is to say that Superman III happens a short time after Superman Returns. It sorta helps to explain why Clark is open to a new love interest in the third movie, right? And who's to say that Richard isn't off somewhere in the background raising Superman's illegitimate son while Kal-El ponders the pros and cons of dating a single mom from Smallville? Too bad that both Lana and Richard died in that horrible off-screen tragedy between III and IV, though.

Awesome seeing you guys watching this one. I worked at Panavision during the production for this movie. A lot of us were nervous for the entire duration due to it being the first Hollywood picture shot on the HD Genesis camera. 2005-2006 was still the early days of digital filmmaking. Thankfully it was a pretty smooth production process aside from a few issues during the cinetape transfer. Bryan Singer was at the demonstration we put out in early 2005 for the genesis camera. I think that's when he was convinced at the potential of digital cinema.

I agree with Holden. I think this is a solid 8. I think Brandon Routh did not get nearly enough credit for the performance. He was channeling Chris Reeves through the entire movie while still bringing some of himself to the role. The film itself would have actually benefitted from a new villain rather than bringing Lex back yet again, but that said. Spacey did a great job in that role.

27:16 In the comics it's explained that the reason he can lift things like this without breaking them, or going right thru them is because he has a bioelectric aura that surrounds his body, giving him invulnerability beyond just his skin being super dense/tough, it normally only extends out about a millimeter or so (which is why even when his superman suit is not made of Kryptonian materials, it's not damaged by bullets or fires, etc), but when he's trying to lift something big like that, he unconsciously extends that aura around whatever he's lifting, strengthening it enough so that it doesn't break from him doing so.

The “It’s a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman!” line actually isn’t from the comics, though it would later be referenced in them throughout the years. It comes from the introduction made first for the Superman radio serial and immortalized by the introduction to the Max Fleischer Superman cartoon serials. I would highly recommend watching the serials as they solidified a lot of the modern Superman mythos and are all available for free on KZbin.

Just like another Superman phrase that was popular for a while, but is trivia now. In the radio serials, Superman would call out the phrase "Up, up, and awaaaaaaaaaaay" to let the audience know he was taking flight. Ya know, just because it’s not mentioned, doesn’t mean Richard doesn’t know that Jason isn’t his son because as mentioned, the timing of conception vs. Lois meeting Richard would be difficult for him to miss. Obviously they never told him Richard wasn’t his father and Richard wanted to play that role in Jason’s life so it played out that way. Now that the excitement has died down and Jason is beginning to demonstrate his Kryptonian heritage, I’m sure a confab will take place. He’ll need guidance. What I’m curious about is why Jason seemed to be so sickly. Might Lois, being aware of who the daddy is, is already concocting a secret identity for him to fall back on when he’s not the new Superman? Or do Kryptonian’s start weaker on Earth before gaining their abilities? Kinda like they did in ‘Man of Steel’? Would that explain why young Clark is wearing glasses while leaping through the corn fields because that’s always struck me as odd.

It gets a lot of hate but it's my favorite Superman movie, it's the only movie that still can make me feel like the 6 year old I was when I first saw this The scene where Lois is looking out the plane window and sees the blur of Superman flying past while the music swells is one of, if not my favorite scene out of any movie.

In some versions of the comic things (Byrne era) it is explained that things are lighter when Superman flies with them as he is flying them the same way he flies himself. I love this film. It is a beautiful love letter to the original film while also being a sequel that adds new elements.

This is the Superman "Pre-Sequel-RetCon-Remake" movie. These versions of Supes and Luthor were really well made... but the daaaamn script. Parents love this movie for some reason, you show this to any parent and they will overlook the plotholes completely so... the tone captures que essence of the original perfectly. They just went over there heads with the continuity, even during this same movie.

Holden is usually so on top of the character mythos, that I'm surprised he didn't mention the subtle homage to the original cover of Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman. In the movie, where Superman catches Kitty's car just before it careens into the café, the wide shot shows him holding the underside of the car near the rear axle, with the nose of the car pointed down at the ground. This is exactly how you see Superman on the cover of Action Comics #1.

Fun fact-When Superman was first created, he couldn’t fly but would leap from roof to roof. Hence the phrase, “Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!” But when he was being adapted for radio and cartoon shorts, they realized it would be just easier to give him the power of flight.

But this movie is a great movie, the story for it (even if Lex did go back to the original Superman plot with him wanting the whole “land” aspect) but the action scenes and opening scene introducing Superman back to the world has been one of my favorite scenes, including the bullet to eye scene: iconic!! But what really sold me this movie was the music, it was so superb with the orchestra to the vocals. Just an all around fun great movie

Richard was a good guy who got screwed over at every turn, And as a bonus, 4.) Depending on if we were in the Donner cut continuity, tgen Jor-El nor the Fortress of Solitude would have been around for Lex to go to in the first place. I believe, even in the theatrical version of Superman II, Superman destroyed the Fortress in the end.

I might be in the minority, but I always preferred Routh over Cavill. A couple of things I've noticed when initially watching this one, and then later Man of Steel. 1). Kumar - the actor must have been and hug Superman fan and begged to be in the movie. Probably under the condition that he does not recite any lines, which made his presence awkward. Him being a villain kind of took me out the movie in disbelief. 2). Kate Bosworth's Lois was horribly written. She wants to have her cake and eat it too. 3). The argument of collateral damage in Man of Steel - Routh's Superman didn't let anything happen to the people of the city. He even lasered the shards of glass that were falling. I feel like Cavill's Superman would have just let it fall.
@mattschliemann9683
@mattschliemann9683 Жыл бұрын
That was one of my main disappointments with Cavill's first movie. Every other movie Supes would fight the villain but also try to minimalize casualties. In Man of Steel he just went all out fighting Zod, not even thinking bout what could be happening to anyone else. Which makes the part where Zod is threatening to heat vision civilians and Supes wanting to prevent that weird. Didn't seem like he cared up to that point. Even funnier, Supes keeping civilians safe by controlling where Zoe's head pointed. Like couldn't Zod just avert his gaze to the right? Aim his eyes and look right? Or does heat vision only work looking straight? lololol

23:02 From what I remember Superman actually extends something of a telekinetic barrier from the bio field present around him when lifting things that by the laws of physics should break(essentially his strength lifts the object and his will keeps it together). Most Superman writers dont really touch on his bio field but it's why even his suit doesn't tear unless he himself is somewhat damaged or weakened.

This was something added to the mythos during John Byrne's reboot post Crisis On Infinite Earths. And really, it hasn't been referred to since his run on that title. But we have to take into context the origins of the mythos was comic books written in the 1938, and giving the character fantastical abilities rarely needed any explaining as to how and why outside of the fact he is an alien on Earth with different environmental conditions from his home world.
