Fun fact: This was not the first time Amy Adams appeared in the Superman universe, she was in the Smallville Season 1 episode 7 " Craving" in which she portrayed a kryptonite infected teen named Jodi Melville who could literally suck the life out of people.

9:50 that moment when Jonathan Kent says “maybe” I don’t think he meant that Clark shouldn’t have saved the kids on the bus, I think he was just saying he doesn’t know how to answer Clark’s question. It’s very reflective of how things are in real life, when people don’t always have the answers to questions like these. He’s just a man who doesn’t want people to discover and hurt his son.

I never got the hate about that line, especially when taken into context regarding the themes of this particular Superman. If a real parent had a god-like child on their hands that the rest of the world knew nothing about, who had powers that no one could possibly begin to understand, encouraging your adopted child to go and out themselves to the world would be a terrifying thought, given the potential reaction. So it wasn't really Jonathan answering to Clark directly, it was him openly admitting that in order to keep a balance to life, rather than playing God essentially, such a horrible thing might be necessary at times. But you're right, it was a non-answer, because Jonathan didn't really have one.
@LittleGalaxyBoy
@LittleGalaxyBoy 22 сағат бұрын
"I don't have an answer to your question, son." would’ve been more straightforward for a kid than just saying "Maybe." I understand that, in this reality, there’s no world filled with heroes dating back to the 40s, so the Kents have no idea how the world would react to a metahuman like Clark existing. As a result, they push him to hide his powers and stay low. This is something the New 52 (2011 to 2016) dealt with when it removed the Justice Society of America from continuity and made Superman the world’s first experience with a hero like that. The Kents pushed Clark to hide his powers, Both Kents would later die in a car crash after dropping a teenage Clark off at his high school prom. He couldn’t save them due to his underdeveloped powers and grew up without his parents, becoming a more closed-off and moody Superman. This version of Superman stuck around for a few years, but after fans complained about it, DC rebooted things in 2016, eventually bringing back the more hopeful, inspirational Superman with Doomsday Cloak bringing back these lost elements, Justice Society, Clark becoming Superboy along with both Kents being alive again. Man of Steel of course released right in the middle of the New 52 and reflects many of the same ideas.

The freak of the week aspect nearly killed my interest in that show. I was letdown by the ending too. All I wanted was one scene of Tom Welling stepping out in the Superman costume. My only problem with Smallville is that, while it’s meant to be a pre-Superman story, they end up using almost all of Superman's rogues' gallery and even formed a proto-Justice League, all before Clark actually becomes Superman. They also never give Clark the "Superboy" name, instead passing it to another character as a fun little reference in an episode. Despite that, I still adore the show, and it features the best live-action rendition of Lex Luthor with Michael Rosenbaum. The Superman: Birthright comic took a lot from Smallville, particularly the idea of the young Clark Kent and Lex Luthor relationship, something I hear Superman (2025) will pull from as well. But yeah, I adore Smallville, even though it definitely does its own thing with the lore. Like Blytheguy mentioned, the whole "freak of the week" aspect, and how it’s all connected to Kryptonite, can get a little repetitive across 10 seasons. But I do like the very X-Files tone it can have with introducing new characters each epiosde with strange abilities.

*_Man of Steel_* was the first time I remember a film truly capturing the idea of how helpless we are fighting against GODS. It emphasizes the underlying issue of _just how hard it is for humans to trust an alien being THAT powerful_ and why he has a bigger issue to overcome growing up before the world can learn about him. It makes his early relationship with Loos breaking that story extremely fascinating. (Plus, that score from Hans Zimmer is SO good in its own way that makes it feel different from the previous films).

- I really really appreciate how you picked up on how General Zod was as much a victim to his genetic coding, so many people who watch this automatically decide that Zod is a bad guy, and while his methods were severe and he was very single minded, that was almost entirely due to him being designed to be a perfect military leader, so he would have had to figure out how to overturn his natural genetic conditioning, after having been convinced that such a choice was something he should do, he literally was nearly a machine so much that he had practically no ability to deviate from his design. That is why I have never looked at Zod as a bad guy, Clark didn't want to fight him, and basically being forced to straight up kill the last living member of his race was so emotionally traumatizing, it can't be measured.

12:22 Fun fact: in the DCEU, the Kryptonian scout ship is actually the Fortress of Solitude. Not many people realize this since it’s never a major focus, but it’s a very different take compared to the iconic ice palace from the comics and the original Superman films. This version of the Fortress is much darker, reflecting the H.R. Giger-inspired designs of Krypton. It’s a shame that so much of Superman’s mythos was never explored, especially since we only got a single Superman film, which Clark wasn’t truly Superman until the very end when Clark fully embraces the role of Superman and his identity as reporter Clark Kent of the Daily Planet, one long origin story. After that, we jumped straight into team-up movies like Batman v Superman and Justice League. We really needed a Man of Steel 2 prior to all of these movies, even a solo Batman film as well but WB wanted to rush into a connected universe and create their very own MCU. But anyways, This darker take on Superman mirrors the overall tone of the DCEU, which aimed for a Dark Knight-inspired view of Superman and other heroes. However, there’s some light mixed in as well. Films like Shazam! and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker series are much more colorful, featuring VERY comic book-inspired outfits and a tonally distinct style from Snyder’s works, even though they exist in the same universe. It's like comparing X-Men (2000) with X-Men: First Class (2011) one is simply more comic book feeling and embraces the colors and outlandish elements of said comics, while Snyder's stuff is more dark and moody yet still fantastical in his own style. The mainline Zack Snyder films-Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League-all share this darker, muted aesthetic. Some fans enjoy this style, while others feel it doesn’t effectively capture the individual personalities of the heroes. For example, Superman and Batman often share a similar visual tone and color palette, which minimizes the stark contrast between them. That’s just Snyder’s depiction of the DC universe, and it ultimately comes down to whether that’s your thing or not. For me personally, Superman should look so out of place next to Batman that it’s almost distracting. A flying man in a bright blue and red suit with a flowing cape should stand out starkly in Gotham City alongside the brooding Dark Knight. Conversely, Batman should feel completely out of place in Metropolis, a bright, retro-futuristic city with bronze and gold Art Deco architecture. That contrast is what makes their dynamic so compelling, and it’s something I feel was missing in Snyder’s vision. You'll notice this going into Batman vs Superman, even Metropolis and Gotham look basically the same which is wild.

We were originally supposed to get a Man of Steel 2 and 3, in the style of the Dark Knight trilogy, but because of the success of Marvel's Avengers, DC took it a personal challenge to do what they were doing but better, resulting in the DCEU. I don't think I've seen anyone interpret Superman falling in to the gravity beam as him being sent through one side of the planet and out the other, but it actually makes sense from one point of view. But no, the machine wasn't creating like a tunnel between the world engine and Zod's ship, it was just sending a gravity pulse back and forth, so he was thrown in to the beam by the machine's 'arm' and was just basically pinned to the ground from the sheer force of the gravity, so he was just stuck in one place until he got the strength to fly up and through the engine.

Typing this just after watching your intro. Christopher Reeve is my Superman as well. I got in trouble in 3rd grade for not paying attention in class, because I was too busy flying my hand around in front of me, fantasizing I was Superman. I liked Brandon Routh in "Superman Returns" but it didn't hit the same. Henry Cavill knocked it out of the park, though. I think he did absolute justice to the role.

"I don't think he's really killed before, he's not really the killing type", Are you sure? Since he didn't care about the destruction, injuries, or deaths fighting in the small town or in Metropolis when crashing the alien ship and fighting Zod. He just shows up in Metropolis at the end of the movie with a smile on his face. Isn't that something a supervillain would do?

I grew up watching the original Superman every week on VHS, I lived and breathed Superman as a kid. I've loved them all, from Reeves, even Dean Cain and Brandon Routh, but this is by far my favourite of the movies and Henry Cavill IS Superman. That scene at the start when he steals the shirt cemented it for me in the cinema lol he's a prototype man 🤣🤣🤣

When you react to the later films in the DCEU, you're gonna get a lot - and I do mean A LOT of hate comments. To those people who are OBVIOUSLY gonna post hate comments, I say, LET HER WATCH 'EM AND MAKE HER OWN JUDGEMENT!!! IT'S NOT UP TO YOU!!! DON'T WATCH HER REACTIONS IF YOU HATE THE FILMS INSTEAD OF WHINING ABOUT 'EM!!! Sheesh!

I love this movie, Hopefully Addie watches the Ultimate Edition of Man of Steel. It adds so much context to what's going on that we miss in the theatrical cut. Might join thee patreon just to suggest that, lol

I thought you were going to watch Superman Returns first, where it’s supposed to be Reeve’s Superman but played by a different actor who looks strikingly similar to him after his unfortunate passing. The movie has problems but it was my first Gen Z introduction to Superman and I adore it.

Would really love just to see Addie’s reaction to the new Superman teaser. Not something she normally does, but definitely curious to hear her thoughts especially coming off the two Reeve films & Cavill’s sadly only solo one. He was done dirty when all he wanted to do was play the classic Superman we slightly got a cameo of in Black Adam.

Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman (1978) and Henry Cavill O boy he brought out the modern era Superman at its best bravo. Man of Steel was awesome I watched it in the theaters and I was blown way and Michael Shannon as General Zod damn his performance was top notch. Cant wait for James Gunn Superman 2025

A great film. Henry Cavill did a great job as Clark Kent/Superman. Also, I think Michael Shannon was brilliant as General Zod. I do not think anyone else would have done better than Shannon. Perfect casting. I think Amy Adams was as good as Margot Kidder if not better as Lois Lane. A very well done film. However, I think you should still go back and watch "Superman Returns". It is considered by many fans as the best successor film to Superman 2 (1980). It came out in 2006. Brandon Routh took over from Christopher Reeve as Superman. Also, Kevin Spacey takes over from Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. Spacey really hits that role out of the park. Kate Bosworth plays Lois Lane, taking over from Margot Kidder. A very well done film. Great reaction Addie!

A lot of people didn’t like Superman Returns with Brandon Routh, which is the part 5 of the original storyline, but I think it was pretty good. Not sure if you've seen it, but you may want to take a peek at it.

Glad you liked this one. I didn't think much of it when I first saw it but then I watched it again and found that it is really a coming of age / alien invasion movie so that made it much better for me with that mindset. I just wish they made a MOS 2 before going into Batman vs. Superman Dawn of Justice, so we got a Superman who what much more comfortable being himself and getting the respect of the humans he saves. But Cavill won't be around for the new DCU movies as you may have seen the new Superman trailer.

Addie, you should have watched "Superman Returns" first to wrap up the storyline that began with Christopher Reeve's films. Brandon Routh and Bryan Singer did a good job picking up the story after Superman II. Man of Steel has a completely different vibe. I'm not criticising the film; just pointing out that the approach and the tone are closer to that of Nolan's Batman.
