I never really understood why people hate dubbed versions of shows, but I totally get it now. Emotions and everything are different. Ultimately changes the characters in a weird way. No complaints about the video! Just an observation.

@@k3n12ock "Never" is a very strong word. There are cases when the dub is better, though it's extremely rare. For example, I'll say that the eng dub of Black Lagoon is better than the original jap one. But yeah, in 99% of cases, watch the original.

That's perfectly valid, I think it's a person to person thing. That said there are good dubs and bad dubs and this definitely was a bad one. There's always going to be issues when dealing with a language barrier. Subs can have crappy translations as well sometimes. Plenty of cultural things also don't translate well no matter what you do. This was my first time watching a dub of a live action show as opposed to animation. I just could not get over people's mouths moving completely out of sync with how they were talking. Took me out of the experience fully. Plus the acting on the voices wasn't great.

Who the heck wants to sit there and read and rewind for many episodes for all the little details you missed for trying to watch a sub. I’ve watched several movies & anime to compare dubbed vs sub and people definitely are overrating the subs. Not saying which is better but don’t think dub deserves nowhere near the hate people give it. They go on long rants trying to explain why the sub “is so much better” like I or anyone else is incapable of comparing the 2 for themselves to see which version one prefers. We get it guys, you watch subs bc you want to pretend you’re getting a much more better genuine experience… also no one one care where you keep crying about it every other comment. This series won over 17 awards including Emmies, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, Critics Guild, and People's Choice. It's funny cause Lee Jung-jae the lead is one of South Korea's most successful actors. He was at an American awards show and on the red carpet an American report asked how felt about this role making a super star. He smiled and humbly said that it was amazing that the Korean film industry was getting the recognition it deserves.

@@KiraMahMan no not really. In particular in anime. All I hear is the actor and/or voice actor yelling for apparently no good reason. Godzilla minus one was great. Maybe the best Godzilla movie. Would have been better dubbed. I don't like reading movies and TV shows. I struggle with reading and watching at the same time. So if my eyes are focused at the bottom of the screen I'm not seeing everything that's happening. Which is only made worse because I don't read fast. So I often have to pause and or rewind to get all the dialogue. It's just not an enjoyable experience. I must admit the SQUID GAME voice acting is sub par. which I don't understand. There are fantastic voice actors out there. Arcane, Invincible, The Legend of Vox Machina, the list goes on and on. Incredibly talented people who can do great VO work but it felt like they hired noobs off the street.

Koreans have said so, and the voice acting the actual actors did really bring out the emotions and the impact. The dubbed voices is bland and emotionless in comparison and you can’t tell the full impact of the acting with it

I really like the format here, it’s more raw, and candid. The issue I have with dubbed iterations is that they do not capture the acting power of the actors. You can’t hear the emotion behind the voice of the person meant to play the role, thus depriving them of a pretty good percentage of their performance. It also doesn’t capture the little things of the story that make it that much more relatable. I’ve been here since the beginning of the channel, and I really enjoy watching you guys. That being said; in the future, if you watch media in a foreign language, please watched the subtitled version, it really advances the experience. I love what you guys do, keep up the good work!

Hi Holden, If you and Jen would be willing, I would encourage watching foreign shows in their original language with Eng subtitles. There was some controversy with Squid Game's in particular for several mistranslations that hurt the storytelling. Korean and English are very different languages and a lot of nuance can be lost in localization. I am Korean-American and don't mind too much since people have their preferences and some actually need the dub to watch the series. But I really think watching Squid Game in its original Korean language gives the best viewing experience and authentic performances!

I liked this format, the differences are minimal enough. If it allows you to get out more series alongside your movies im down. Hoping for The Boys Season 4 in a couple weeks. One of the most interesting aspects of this whole show was the ending. When they were betting on the guy in the snow, the winner loses no matter what. You can realize that in the end, he did exactly what all VIPs do, bet on people and watch, instead of going yourself and help.

it was never intended to be more than the one season, they're just forcing it because of how successful it was. because of that i don't think it can possibly compare to the first season. the only storyline i can see is that the cop from season 1 survived being shot and falling in the water, and he and gi-hun team up and try to bring down the VIPs.

While the rest of the world (non english speaking countries) plays foreign movies in theaters, and people are exposed to foreign cultures all the time, not to mentioned, that most people in the world are at least bilingual.

The worst part about episode 6 (Marble one), is that they teamed up with people they liked. Imagine if you two were in there, you'd probably have teamed up together thinking you were taking on other people. Then it would come down to one of you going on and the other having to die. Casually watch would be a good series! The dub for this was really bad especially for the emotional scenes. The scene with Ali, the girl and the old man dying made me a sobbing mess. That being said if you do prefer dub, I'd recommend shows actually done well like Cyberpunk edgerunners or even well dubbed anime

@@jager3090 There are a bunch of articles explaining it, but to summarize: - Mistranslations made for a weaker script. Localization is a tough job and some changes are inevitable, but people fluent in Korean and English have compared the two and expressed that not only are many phrases translated incorrectly that can cause a disconnect with the intended message of scenes, the writing is overall weaker and dumbed down, hurting the storytelling and the series' message. - Dubbing in another language is hard so I don't want to be too harsh, but the performances really don't compare to the original Korean from very talented actors. And since it was acted live originally in Korean, it sounds a lot more natural because it's the actors speaking it and coordinating it with their physical acting. - While the themes of classism and all that can be broadly applied to many countries, Squid Game is very much made with Korean culture in mind I would encourage watching with English rather than English [CC] subtitles, since they give a more direct and accurate translation of what they say in Korean.

If people are ok with subtitles, watch sub. If people don't like subtitles, dub is fine. It just sounds goofy once you've watched the original, but it doesn't affect the quality of viewing if you're open-minded and get adjusted to it. If you don't understand Korean, all you're doing is reading words and then adding emotion based on how they sound anyway, which is not THAT different of an intake process. People are overreacting.

I genenerally dont mind english dub for foreign shows but for k dramas, it feels weird when i dont hear it in korean. I remember cringing so hard when i accidentally started watching one of the episodes in english because it defaulted out of Korean to English for some reason. Haha. If you do plan to continue reacting to kdramas and whatnot, i do recommend seeing them in korean. Because 99% of the time, the dubs are horrendous. Not just for Squid Game but for the vast majority of other k dramas. Trust me, ive tried. Its very different from watching anime dubbed because there are some good english dubs of anime like FMA: Brotherhood or Cowboy Bebop, to name a few. You miss a lot of the nuance as well as mistranslations or direct translations that dont make too much sense in english. But im sure you know that. I just hope, in the future, you decide to go with the original language instead.

@@Edwin.X There are English [CC] (Closed Captioning) and English in the subtitles options. The English [CC] subtitles are specifically for the English dub, while the English subtitles are a closer, more direct translation of what the actors are actually saying in Korean.

It was so accurate that it seemed like it was done by someone familiar with the original language and culture and chose to stay faithful to the writer's vision. This is actually pretty great. Some of the shows like marvel and DC and the boys are good individually but shows that aren’t part of a franchise like this, this is a great format to try. I imagine you can watch much more stuff. We don’t need the lights and mikes and chairs and all of that, this format works just as well especially if it’s more convenient for you

I was afraid this would happen one day. For any foreign movies or shows I would say watch it in the original language to hear their range of tone. Godzilla Minus one is great in the Japanese language. For anime I don’t mind if it’s sub or dub since there are really good dubs

I’ve been going through the comments and it really made more sense for you guys to watch it dubbed because it was a relaxed viewing before bed. It’s not that deep. Though I’ve got to say since I’m bilingual I’ve noticed dubbings sound better in Spanish than in English. You guys can always rewatch it in Korean if you’d like, don’t feel bullied by any comments. Fun fact… or sad fact 🥲: In Korean Ali would call Sang Woo older brother as a term of familiarity that is common to do for a friend or peer older than you😭😭🥹🫶🏻. I enjoyed watching this along with you guys. Definitely do more relaxed viewings of shows you’ve been wanting to watch and felt obligated to react to. It’s a good format.

I think splitting seasons in halves would be the best way to do this imo. 1 episode reactions just take to long, and i think having 2 videos on a season would be better for the channel no? More uploads etc.

When the language has been dubbed, you miss a lot of language-specific aspects of the setting, which is often an important part of the setting. This is especially the case with Korean, which has a very characteristic sound to it. It's a pretty important aspect of Squid Game. The story takes place in Korea. Not California. The dubbing in Squid Game is also extremely poorly done and some strange translations choices made. E.g. the "red light green light" scene which hits entirely different when you watch the original language. I wish Holden and Jen had uploaded their reaction one episode at a time, so they had caught that they're watching the wrong version.

Really not being a snob but as soon as I realised you're watching it dubbed I just couldn't bear it. So much of acting is in the voices, their tone and emotion matched with their acting... itt takes away SO much when it's dubbed. You're talking about some of the best actors in Korea being replaced by hired voices. It really truly takes so much away from it. I can understand with anime, but when it's real people acting... dubbed just takes so much away. Try watching this subbed, from wherever you continue it and you will totally understand. Imagine dubbing over the voices of robert de niro or leonardo dicaprio or any other high calibre actor.

Of course, probably they didn’t know, but you can always ask if the dubbing is good, and people will tell you. Exactly it's mostly people jumping on the bandwagon of what others say, no mind of their own. People reading the subtitles miss most of what's happening on screen while they're busy reading. It's impossible to see what's happening while you're reading. It's like reading a book while watching a TV show or movie.

I really like this format of you both watching a series. It’s very casual. I loved this first season of the show. It was absolutely phenomenal. I am cautiously excited for Season 2. Not because I think it’s going to be bad. It’s just this first season ended incredibly well and the stories came full circle (minus the little sort of cliffhanger at the end). Overall, I love this format guys. Good stuff 👊
