My friend watches EVERY Star Wars movie for the FIRST time

Hello there! I just wanted to quickly address a recurring theme I'm seeing in the comments about the order in which we watched the movies. So we originally were going to watch them in release order, however we know Matt isn't the biggest fantasy/sci-fi guy and preferred if the story was just linear. He also already knew about Vader being Luke's father because it's so embedded into pop culture so there wouldn't have been a surprise there anyway. Normally my videos only get a few hundred views, except for a few outliers, so I wasn't expecting this many people to comment. So I'll try to quickly go over some more things I'm seeing in the comments to broadly answer/address them: Yes, we wanted Matt to like Star Wars but still love him even though he didn't. If Matt had seen them in release order it wouldn't have "changed everything." He still wouldn't have liked them. We all went to see Rise of Skywalker together at my local theater and Matt actually dressed up as a Jedi! He thought the movie was alright (more planet floo floo stuff). This video was just for fun, so please don't crucify Matt for his opinions of the movies or me for showing them in the order we did. We watched them all and he didn't like them. And that's okay. I can, because it seems like many people aren’t willing to break out of their comfort zones and give things a try. I know way too many people like that. On the other hand: There are such big time differences between the production years of the films. So when watching the movies in the order of the production year, he will already wonder why the graphics/CGI/etc. are so different :D (Confuses in my opinion).

The obvious upgrades in movie making, acting and cgi are now upgrades instead of downgrades 2. You start at imo the best movies to directly hook you on the star wars universe. This way you want to watch the others to fill in the gaps. 3. It's way less difficult to follow this way since you watch one storyline. And then come back in time to see all the characters you already know but when they were young.

Space odyssey is a hard science fiction with an emphasis on "science" and Star Wars is a space opera - basically a swashbuckling adventure set in space. It's like comparing the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter - both got wizards and magic and stuff, but tonally they are completely different stories. Oh, and I'm not sure about Space odyssey bringing sci-fi to the mainstream - it was the sixties after all, the space race was on. The genre had a massive resurgence in the fifties and falling out with audiences and Hollywood in the seventies, right before a New Hope - it seems to me that 2001 more likely closed the chapter in the history of sci-fi and Star Wars opened up a new one.

Ep2 Attack of the Clones had some best visuals ever like all scenes with Obi Wan and Jango especially chase in asteroid field with those bombs and sound of Slave 1 cannons and engines. Many Jedi in action where it was shown that they were not prepared for war, huge area as ground battle where Jedi had clones, LAAT gunships and acclamators in sky above against huge droid army. There is million small details like opening shot where Naboo cruiser make 180 turn and planet was shown from different perspective than others which is kind of foreshadowing that normal is become opposite on that planet and since Coruscant is center of galaxy, then galaxy is turn in opposite way. Anakin on speeder with two tatooine suns on his side and duel of the fates play along, end scene where clones boarding on their ships and going on battlefields across galaxy etc... Ep2 had lot of great scenes and lot of good dialogue like Obi wan and Dooku, Palpatine telling Anakin how he will become powerful while also planting seeds that Jedi don't want Anakin achieve his full power because he would be too powerful. Jango and Obi wan in Jango's apartment in Kamino etc...

Keep in mind most of us grew up with these movies. We watched them with childhood eyes and open hearts taking in every character and rooting for the light! As we became adults, our inner kid is still so connected to these films we don't give a shit of our adult feels they are good films, we just want to continue our story!!! If we all saw these as adults I'll bet we wouldn't have the same passion for Star Wars as we do. But I'm grateful my inner kid grew up with these films and consider them some of my greatest memories.

It is true tho, there were a lot more special effects, tons of motion and movement etc in the prequels compared to the sequels - and the better visual effects blended them better into reality so they don't stand out so much as visual clutter. The prequels had a shit ton going on in all scenes. But they were far better written compared to the prequels. If only they could take the best from both worlds and combine... which they actually did with Rogue One tbh.

When someone says they don’t know what’s going on in a movie, it means they weren’t paying attention because they were bored by the movie. Considering he’s not a sci-fi/fantasy fan and he has no nostalgia for the franchise like the rest of us, everything starting with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan going to negotiate regarding trade blockades would’ve seemed like mundane chatter to him. The PT was poorly paced, directed, and written, while the OT, even though it was hailed as great action-adventures of their time, was too old, so TFA being his favorite made sense - perfect blend of modern action and classic Star Wars storytelling.
