The Bale controversy as stated by many of the actors on set who have been interviewed about it. It was an 18 hour shoot that day, everyone was exhausted. Terminator Salvation frustrates me pretty badly because it's ALMOST there (plus it had one of the most amazing trailers I've ever seen) and they cast the most ideal future war John Connor but it somehow feels just....wrong. For seeming like they tried to make it be a full movie of the future war scenes from T1 and T2....it really looks nothing like those scenes except superficially and there are many many details in Salvation that are in direct contradiction to things stated in The Terminator. Like in T1 Kyle Reese says they stay down by day but can move around at night. But says literally the exact opposite thing in Salvation and I don't understand how you get that mixed up if you're trying to make such a faithful film. When that's your goal, these little details do matter. That being said...it is better than T3. But that's just my opinion. T3 just looks so bad to me. It looks subpar even if you're not holding it up to James Cameron standards. Like...it just looks filmed poorly. Like a SyFy Channel original or something. The effects are fine i guess. Salvation at least looks like it cost its budget..
@KHAOE1
@KHAOE1 Жыл бұрын
@markcruz359 the blue tone of the 1st 2 films is James Cameron's pallatte style he choses when he directs. You'll see the blue pallatte in True Lies as well as Titanic, The Abyss and Avatar. That's how you can tell that T3 and Salvation were made by different directors. Without it, it doesn't give the future war that dark and gloomy feel the first 2 depictions of the future war had in T1 and T2. Like you, I wish it woulda been used in this film too. Woulda been perfect for the franchise.
@markcruz359
@markcruz359 Жыл бұрын
@@davidsavage5630 I agree Salvation still looked too modern for something set 20 to 30 years in the future. It looked too much like Mad Max. It didn't capture the dark blue tones of the future scenes from the first 2 movie. It also needed a huge war between a battallion of T-800s and the human rebellion. Dont even get me started on T3, the future scene in that movie looked so cheao like it was filmed on a closed set instead of an outside location. Plus they just gave the actor old age makeup and a bald cap which looked weird and he looked the least like John Connor

This movie is my favorite, second only to T2. I just really liked how gritty and gnarly the world building is, the design of the terminator machines, etc... Everything was just so nicely bleak, gloomy, dark, and gray, and super post-apocalyptic. The scene where the torso crawls after Connor was just chef's kiss, the dirty crappy terminator focused exclusively on killing him, and the realism of the whole thing. It was orgasmic for me.

For me these 4 files are great and have an overall complete story. T1 - focusing on Sarah and Kyle and introducing the terminator, T2 - focusing on John and Sarah and the creation/destruction of Skynet, T3 - focusing on an older John and setting up his transformation into the leader of the human resistance and actually seeing Skynet and judgement day take place, and T4 - John now a military leader set post judgment day in the future.

High-octane actors get seriously worked up, emotionally, during filming. And after a particularly bad/long day of filming, when they just want to go home, but can't leave until the director is satisfied. It's terribly easy to boil over and go crazy on a guy who messes up a scene because of accidentally inserting himself. I can easily see how Bale, at the end of a long day, would go off on the dude. Btw this one had another ending that even made it some novelizations, but test screenings and fans reacted so badly to it that it was changed. Basically John Connor would downright *die* but his importance as a symbol and humanity's savior was so that his skin is fitted into Marcus and *he* would become John Connor. That was changed to Marcus giving away his heart because of the backlash. Which is ironic considering what they did to John Connor in the following movies.

This movie is definitely underrated amongst the Terminator movies. I love the callback to Terminator 1: Marcus teaches Kyle to tie a safety sling to his weapon so it can't be snatched away from him in this movie, and in the original Terminator movie we see Kyle tying that same safety sling to the shotgun he stole from the police car in the beginning of that movie. Small subtle details and callbacks like that are what really make this movie work as a worthy sequel. Though the face of that Arnold CG was very uncanny valley, even for the time...iirc, Arnie was a full CG replacement, as they wanted him bulked like he was in his younger years. As for the Bale "controversy" that happened, it didn't happen because of Bale being a prima donna or anything like that (he's apparently a really nice guy to talk with). They were at the end of an 18+ hour day of shooting, which had been spent trying to nail a very long very dialogue-heavy scene which required Bale to be super hyped-up and angry...the DP had walked into frame and ruined multiple takes throughout the day, and on the final take when it appeared they'd finally nailed it, the DP walked into frame again and ruined it. We all have limits to how much frustration we can handle, and that was the point where Bale hit his limit. His "acting anger" for the scene and his actual frustration merged and boiled over, and he snapped at the guy. And to be fair, what Bale said wasn't wrong...a DP should know better than to walk into the middle of a scene while the cameras are rolling, doing that is some amateur-hour shit. Doesn't excuse Bale for doing it, but it is far more understandable than it was originally made out to be. From reports of the other actors on-set, Bale did apologize to the DP when they were leaving that night as well, months before the audio of the incident leaked.

This is the best Terminator movie to come out after T2. I would have really loved to see the sequels they had planned, as this was supposed to be the basis for a new trilogy. The second film would have started with the resistance breaking into Skynet facilities to get more advanced weapons (plasma rifles and such) since normal guns were useless against the new t-models. And while doing so, they discover the facility where time travel is being developed and tested. John sends himself back to 2011 London to warn of the impending doom, but Skynet sends several terminators back after him, leading to a city wide fight. John does come back somehow. Robert Patrick would have been introduced as a scientist that was turned into a human-terminator hybrid like Marcus, (Marcus being the test subject so that RP’s character could be created) so that Skynet could use his cell replication work to build the T-1000. He’d return in the 3rd installment as an antagonist, reveling in the opportunity to continue his work, and develops the T-1000 to look like his younger self out of hubris and narcissism. And would lead to an all out war for humanity with a human victory by the end of the film. This was supposed to end the Terminator franchise. Bring it to a full close. Instead, a bunch of man-children were upset that: A) John wasn’t inexplicably the leader of the resistance right out of the gate. B) They didn’t already have plasma weapons when that technology is barely being developed. C) This movie didn’t do everything that was being planned for the entire trilogy in one single movie. So, the sequels got scrapped, and were replaced with a couple of the worst movies ever made instead. Whoops.

For the cgi Arnold they had the plaster lifecast molds of his head from the original Terminator and they ended up scanning the head into computer. I was always impressed with being a mixture of practical effects and cgi for that scene.

This was a very well made movie, the visual effects and terminator effects were very well done. My gripe with this film is the story and Marcus's mission. Skynet created Marcus and his mission and he didn't even realise what he was doing was to bring John Connor and Kyle Reese to Skynet. But he didn't set out to find anyone, he was just wandering around the city and randomly was shouting at a T600 and was shot at and was saved by Reese. He then fights a massive robot and falls to the grounds and skips a long the river like stone, and he randomly comes across Blair he helps free and who then takes to him to the resistance base and where Conner is stationed which was lucky Blair lets him escape after he is hit by a mine and it is finally revealed he is a terminator even thought the fight against the robot was the give away. He saves Connor from the Robot snakes in the water and agree to save Kyle at Skynet, they both go there and Skynet reveal their plan to Marcus and he succeeded in bringing them Connor and Reese to Skynet. But Skynet did not know the locations either of them and Marcus only found both by luck.

The original ending of having Marcus Wright taking the mantel of "John Conner" after he dies would have been awesome and made complete sense. Not many people knew what John Conner looked like, let alone met him. It would explain why he was so impossible to kill and how he was able to ultimately defeat the machines, because a machine was the one helping. Owell, alternate universe

So in regards to the walking on set thing. In bales defense they where shooting in hot weather in hot sweaty outfits and the mic guy kept getting in the shot and it get to a point where the guy didn't for the umpteenth time and bale kinda had it at that point and was overheated and mad. Hope that clears some things up. 😊

Yeah. What nobody says is I'll bet the director and fellow crew members were also pretty ticked off at the guy, that day. But of course nobody cares about them. They only care that Bale lit him up, and of course the tabloids are going to run with THAT narrative. lol

Hey, it’s the movie where the famous Christian Bale rant comes from. The original script had John Conner die and had Marcus Wright take his place and his face, making John Conner a symbol even after his death, explaining that it wasn’t even John who was the hero but Marcus with Johns face, I don’t know why they changed it but they did.
@Spongebrain97

I think they changed it because Christian Bale wanted to play John Connor and not Marcus who he was originally cast as and the hope was they'd make some sequels with Bale continuing to play John

One thing I don't think was caught was the scar Connor got from the T-800. It matches the scar the character had in the flash forward in the beginning of T2. I just think they did a really good job of keeping the Continuity. The rubbery skinned T-600s Reece talked about. The scanned code he showed Sarah. How he talked about being rounded up. I also liked how it continued Connor's story from 3. How he is supposed to be important but not immediately important in the resistance hierarchy. Overall, it was a solid Terminator movie. Honestly as high as the series could go.

Yeah Holden was on point there were 18 years between T2 and Salvation so Arnold was looking a lot older and wasn't in the same shape he was in during his bigger buff days so it wouldn't have made sense to cast him as the brand new T800 rolling off the assembly line. That and also Arnnie was doing a lot of other stuff at the time and seemed to steer away from acting a lot around that time, he was still governor of California when this movie came out. Some might argue they just shouldn't have skinned the T800 but personally I was fine with it, they kept the view of his face brief but it cemented it was the model we had all come to know.

Good review as always, but I really loved the use of Arnold in this limited way, since the T-800 was being introduced, and the idea that they used a younger version of him that seems to match the original movie. I love this movie and think one of the only reasons some people don’t like it as much is that they don’t show the laser guns seen in the future battles shown in the first three terminator movies. This is simply because we haven’t yet reached that point in the timeline, but they eventually will.

I think no matter what you think of later movies in any series including the aliens movies. It's a good idea for you to watch them because they are part of that franchises zeitgeist and coming to a better understanding of the fanbase and why they reject some movies and love others or why they could be polarising etc. You get the full fanbase experience and try to place yourself in the fans shoes at the time of these movies releases for each one off the back of the others.

Remember T-2 changed the timeline. In T-3 we are told John Dies by model 101 (Arnold) and in T-3 they kill all the people who were going to be his generals. So in Salvation he could have died but also he isn't the resistance leader because he doesn't have any of his generals. The timeline changes in every movie. There is technically only one Arnold, 101 model of the T-800. John's wife was at the factory because in T-3 she finds the T-800 after it kills John so it was supposed to make you think back to T-3. Salvation also explains that humans are turned into terminators which is why marcus is a prototype and why internment camps are at a factory.

The original ending had John actually die from his injuries, and Marcus volunteer to have John's face/skin put on his body, because John was too important as a figurehead to lose. I think it was actually shot, and test audiences were horrified that the John that sent back Kyle in the original movie wouldnt have actually been John at all, so fortunately they reshot it as the released ending.

@philipforchrist2239 Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly the original ending was leaked online before the film came out. It was not the ending footage, but the spoiler info and the internet response was unfavorable to say the least. Because of this the reshot the ending with Marcus giving his heart to John.

Don't understand why everyone hates on this film, its quite good with competently filmed action scenes. Compared to the trash that came after its a masterpiece. It actually tried to do something different and not just copy what T2 did. Genysis and dark fate both just have the same story as t2 with a good terminator protecting a messiah character from a bad terminator. Salvation actually shows us the future battle. Also Arnold wasn't in the film because he was stull governor of California at the time.

Sorry one more, the part where the t800 scratches John's face. In T2 john as an adult has a scratch on his face. And t3 John has a scratch in a flash forward scene of him celebrating the Victor of the war

I'm sure this was already mentioned elsewhere, but Arnold was Governor of California during the time the film was made and had other priorities. The film was also made 25 years after the original and he had aged quite a bit physically. For the size of the part and the cost it would have taken to get him back, it made more sense to go with a CGI double.

One thing I really like about this movie and what it brings to the overall franchise is that we finally see the post-apocalyptic future world where the Resistance and Skynet were battling it out. I mean, sure, we got glimpses of it and flash forward scenes from the previous movies, but after getting this movie, we get a good tour of how the world is for future humanity and the results of Judgement Day. It also unifies the machines in a really nice way, building on the lore established about Skynet in T3. We see Skynet not only as an AI that went rogue in deciding that humanity needed to be wiped out, but that Skynet is apparently a pretty clever mastermind, while all the machines are not just individual, separate, mindless killing machines, but well-coordinated chess pieces in a brilliant, evil AI's plot to finish what it started.

I wished they had used the original draft of this version of the film. Where John Connor actually does die, and it's actually Marcus wearing John's face who keeps the resistance going. It would still explain why "John" trusted Kylie to go to the past, his ability to connect with skynet and steal its information to fight against it, making him Skynet's greatest enemy.
