I have my grandfather's original fruitcake recipe! He use to make each of us a fruitcake for the holidays. He always started early buying up the ingredients. I still have the original round tin that he always put mine in. When I emptied it, I would always give it back to him to put mine back in!!!!! IT WAS FABULOUS!!! I MISS HIM and his fruitcakes so bad!!!

What a blessing to have the recipe handed down and to have such wonderful memories of your grandfather!! My grandfather was my favorite person in the world and although he's been gone over 20 years, I still miss him!! I'm one of the rare people that LOVE fruitcake!! My Dad makes one and uses Pineapple Juice instead of water when he's making the cake from scratch. He gave me his recipe! He is 93 yrs old now and has Dementia and no longer cooks but his is STILL the best fruitcake that I have ever tasted!!!

My sweet daddy loved fruitcake so good! I finally found a recipe that had no batter at all, only fruits (no peel or citron) & nuts &, if I remember correctly, 2-3 cans of sweetened condensed milk. You had to grease your pan AND line it with greased waxed paper because basically everything just melts together from all the sugar. He loved it! Said it was the only one he wanted from then on.

I’m so thankful to see you make fruit cake. My Granny made it every year and it was a true labor of love. She cut all her own fruit, chopped her nuts and mixed the batter in a big pink wash pan. We looked forward to it every year and I’d give anything to be back in her kitchen watching her cook. Fruit cake gets a bad rap, but folks just don’t know what they are missing. I love your channel because your cooking reminds me so much of my Granny’s. We are just good ole South GA people raised on country cooking. Thanks so much for sharing. ❤

HI Tammy! We now understand Chris' opening remarks on the video! 🤣 Since we took the fruit cake out of the oven and let it cool (barely!) my crew have been busy with their taste tests! Gosh! Is this fruit cake ever good!! We used the grape juice, too! I was intrigued. Loving the Vol 4 cookbook, too! My crew delved into it and immediately began picking out the recipes they wanted to try....mostly desserts, of course, but we'll manage to balance the monthly menu planning board with many of the other fabulous recipes, too! Thanks so much for another video, y'all!

My Mum made the most delicious fruit cales and she taught me from an early age. My favourite (but most time consuming) are the ones where the fruit is mixed eith brandy or rum and left to soak for about a month before the cake is made. The fruit mixture uses dultanas, currants, raisins, dates (without that sugary coating), dried apricots, glace cherries, mixed peel, dried figs if liked. The cake is made with butter, dark brown sugar, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses, flour and the soaked fruits are added to the mix - it's a labour of love mixing it together! It goes into a large cake tin snd baked in a slow oven for about three and a half hours. When cojed, a snall amount of brandy, rum or sherry is poured over the top if the cake every day or so (maybe half a dozen times) and then the cake can be stored till Christmas. It can be made months ahead and is very, very moist and rich. A quicker and easier version is a boiled fruit cake - the fruit, butter, sugar and alcohol or water is put into a large saucepan and boiled till the sugar has dissolved. Its then left to col completely before the flour, eggs and spices are added, along with dome slivered slmonds or roughly choped walnuts (these also go in the other cake too), before baking. This type foesnt last ad long as the first type, but is delicious. Again, alcohol is drizzled over the top fir a few days and its best to leave it for at least a week before cutting. These are both served in small slices ss they are very rich (except my don cuts great doorsteps because he loves fruitcake and traditional Christmss pudding - and fruit mince tarts ...😂). Im Australian but Mum's and Dad's families migrated here from England, do we prefer Emglish fruit cakes etc.

I have my mother's recipe that she used to make. It is handwritten on a piece of ledger paper. LOL I love fruit cake. I can remember my job growing up was cutting up all the candied fruit. I always wanted to cut it right after it was made but we always had to wait till Christmas. I bought me a small Claxton at Walmart, and ate at bite at a time. It was not as good as my mothers but it was really good. I can not remember if mother used brandy or whisky, and my mother did not drink at all. It is still hard at the holidays without my mother. She used to always make a fresh coconut cake and I honor her and in memory, I always make a fresh coconut cake.

Hi Tammy. I’m making my FIRST fruit cake now. I have no idea what I’m doing. Because I started with another recipe before I saw this one, I had more cake batter than I had fruit. I baked the leftover batter in a small springform pan and OMG. I did some rum extract (which I’m not fond of), because the person I’m baking it for wanted it. I think your cake batter with a flavored cream cheese icing would be AMAZING!!! My cake still have 1 1/2 hours to go. I’m excited now 😁😁

In the future could you tell us the size of the pans you use that fit the baking time you use for what you are making at that time? I baked mine 30 minutes longer but they were still so soft they wouldn't hold together. Was very good although too much butter for me. My husband loved it too. I love watching your videos. I have been looking for a stack cake recipe like my grandmother made. Tried many but none like hers. I saw on your website that you have one. I have not watched it yet but looking forward to it

I'm in the UK Tammy and never made a fruit cake in my life, but for some reason just lately, I have been craving one. My mum used to make them every Christmas (she died in 2016) and with Christmas coming soon, and thinking about her, I just started thinking about those wonderful fruit cakes of hers. So I went to try and buy one, but none of them looked right. Way too dark, too many dark currants, just looked very unappetising, and they aren't cheap to buy either!! I wanted one like my mum's with glacé cherries, a mixture of fruit , walnuts, pecans etc. So I typed 'home made fruit cake with cherries and mixed fruit/nuts' and it brought me here. So I will be cooking my first ever fruit cake to your recipe. Wish me luck!!

Looks fantastic! I'm going to have to try this. For decades my family used a "9&1/2 Minute Fruitcake" recipe. I've never been able to find it listed anywhere. In addition to the usual fruits and nuts, it also used a jar of mincemeat. I don't add too much of the candied citrus peel but do load up on citron, cheries and pineapple. I also wrap it in cheesecloth and drizzle Grande Marnier over it a few times and let it cure for two or three weeks. Love a good fruitcake!!!

I like your idea of baking them in decorative tins. I never would have thought those were oven proof. Your recipe looks very good, but we like glacéd cherries, golden raisins and candied pineapple only for the fruity part, no citron. We like but alcohol flavoring, even if it’s only from extract.

I don't think she meant he baked the fruit cake in the tin. I think he baked the fruitcake in a pan and then put it in the decorative tin to give them to the family. The heat would burn the " paint" picture off the decorative tin.
