A filmek ezen a szakaszon végrehajtott méréseket mutatják be. -- ganzdata.hu/video/ganz_nl.html (Szerk. A link sajnos nem él -- 2015. 10. 07.)

How is it that the pantograph is on the train car and not on the locomotive? I've never seen this kind of setup with a freight train before.

It's far from an ordinary freight train :) It is a specialised test train/wagon. I had no luck finding anything about it, maybe because it was purpose built only for these test series and decommissioned after?

@@YCbCr There used to be a webpage about the tests but I can't find it anymore. The carriages with the rail on top with the insulators underneath was a big capacitor or resistor bank (or both) to simulate the way an electric train draws current and deals with phase changes or, as in these tests a short circuit situation. They didn't want to subject 25kV capable locomotives to these tests due to being unsure what could happen and the amount of damage it could do. 25kV is a new voltage for overhead wires in my country so it was unknown what some of the problems could be on equipment commonly used in the 1500V system. There probably also was a problem with security systems on some of the new locomotives not being capable of being used (and as a result, might have halted operation all together) which is why it also was done like this. Different types of section insulators were tested to see which ones would be capable of efficiently quenching possible arcs, or withstanding the damage in potential phase-to-neutral or earth situations.

why does it ark when pantograph touches it??

It's a section insulator, meant to either separate 2 parts of the overhead wire system that is running on 2 different parts of the electric grid which might be running on a different phase. It is also used to connect 2 parts of the overhead wiring system that might be on different voltages at the moment this route crosses over into the existing electrical train system, which runs on 1500V volts. A common tactic then is to have a section without voltage applied (for a specified length, marked with signs at the entrance and exit) for the train to cross, and after that a part in which it passes a section which is grounded (should the train for some reason have caused an earthing fault in the first section, it will likely cause a short in this next section and in a nasty way notify the driver something's wrong). After the grounded part follows another voltage-less part and then it crosses over into the new voltage system (either higher or lower). All sections are marked with signs not to request power and let the train coast because the current draw could cause an arc to form and damage the wiring system and pantograph, while the pantograph is allowed to stay up. The clips in this video were tests, 25kV was a new voltage in my country and as a result, it was unclear if section insulators that we normally used would be capable of handling mistakes, and if adaptations were needed to mititage some of the potential for causing damage should the driver keep requesting power or during an error in the overhead wiring. A train with a huge capacitor or resistor (or both) bank trying to mimic an actual locomotive dealing with phase changes or short circuit situations was used for this.

For that much excess power, something's wrong. Something's completing the circuit when it shouldn't be.

There's nothing wrong with it, these are section insulators tested under short circuit conditions. Now if there's one that fails.. that's wrong :)

Speed is not a factor here. Normally the main circuit breaker should be turned off, or the pantograph lowered, in such situations. Otherwise this happens :)
