It's refreshing to see a cruise ship with a complimentary food area with an emphasis on its country's food/beverage delicacies. Everything looks delicious especially the pea soup and fried (late in the day) food.

Yeah the Grand Dutch Café was definitely a pleasant surprise- we wished we found out about it earlier in the cruise. Thanks for the comment! 🙂

It certainly is complimentary, though they have some items that do cost extra like wrapped Dutch snacks, beer, liquor, specialty coffee & tea.

I’m about to board the Koningsdam for the third time this year and frankly one of the biggest reasons is this cafe. Best cappuccino on the ship! The ham and cheese sandwich is one of my favorite sandwiches on board. The chocolate puff pastries are very rich and delicious. I try to have only one per cruise. But, I get about three chocolate chip cookies per cruise! I’m sad that my last two cruises will be on the Zuiderdam and Westerdam because they don’t have this cafe!

We'll have to try the cappuccino next time 😋. Thanks for sharing your experience with the café- definitely one of the culinary highlights of the ship!

Can you compare dining in Princess vs. Holland America? Which do you prefer and why?
@TravelTouristVideos3 жыл бұрын
Both are very good actually. Buffet closes later for Princess at night, but HAL has slightly better quality IMO for the buffet & the main dining room. We enjoy both just as much actually.

Hello, love your videos about any particular cruise lines. I have watched your NCL ones and now have a HAL on Koningsdam booked for summer. I understand the ship is pretty full booked. Your video of Nieuw Statendam is interesting since it is about the same size as Koningsdam. Can you tell me how busy it was and especially the buffet at Lido Market? Since you do not serve yourself, it it tend to get busier and longer waits? We also don't have the dining seating times set. Is there a long wait at the dining room if you just show up without reservations?
@TravelTouristVideos Жыл бұрын
Thank you! 🙂 The buffet can get busy, but usually you don't have to wait a long time to get the food. Not much of a difference in terms of wait vs self-serve. Some stations you might see a line but you can always go get food at other stations first and then come back. For the main dining room, we've only had anytime dining on HAL. But we always go 5 minutes before opening which helps a lot in getting faster service.

@@TravelTouristVideos Thanks for your information. I'm so looking forward to this Alaska cruise on the Koningsdam in June. Another input I'd love from you is how the check in and embarkation process is? Are there any tricks to avoid the long lines that we've experienced at other cruises? Mahalo!
@TravelTouristVideos Жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! We've boarded all our HAL cruises in Fort Lauderdale, and they were all very quick. But for Seattle or Vancouver it could take a little longer. If you show up by 10 AM which is what we'd recommend, there's a good chance you'll be eating lunch by 11:30 AM.

we just got off rotterdam. That tall apple pie at GDC is excellent. The marble cake looked very good but we did not try it. Surprisingly we (and others based on some hollowed out carcasses I saw on a couple of random plates) thought that the bossche bol (big chocolate puff) was just so-so. The chocolate was sort of bitter-sweet, but not overly bitter. I thought the dough would be more like an eclair or doughnut, but it was a bit tougher (and not sweet). And the cream was not a custard, but just plain whipped cream, not really very sweet. We did get two of them to confirm ;-). Not bad at all, it just didn't wow us. But the apple pie is excellent. In general, the croissants, fruit pies, breads were all excellent. Mousse/'cream' based things were more like 'good' but nothing earth shattering to us. But the food quality overall was way above our recent Mardi Gras sailing. I'd definitely do Rotterdam again. I really have no burning desire to do Mardi Gras again (although we'll probably do more Carnival out of convenience). Rotterdam had some excellent tenderloin, prime rib, lamb chops, shrimp (larger and more available than MG), scallop entree, crabcake entree. These were more upscale than what Mardi Gras had to offer. I also like smoked salmon, which Rotterdam has on the breakfast buffet, but carnival does not. The lido coffee on Rotterdam is not good at all; I let them know in my post cruise survey--but overall it was a good time, great food, I really like the pinnacle class.
@TravelTouristVideos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the food from your Rotterdam cruise! Too bad about the buffet coffee, but sounds like a lot of tasty food which is what one would expect from HAL. We'll have to try that apple pie next time 😋

I find free coffee is often weak so you get incentives to pay for their specialty coffee.
@MeowMeow-vo9cj2 жыл бұрын
I was on this same ship a month ago. Never tried the Bossche-Bol ‘cuz they only make 150 a day I heard 😢 Hopefully get to try next time as HAL is my favorite cruise liner. The apple pie and particularly the Almond cookie were very good. ❤😊
@monkeyb18202 жыл бұрын
@@MeowMeow-vo9cj definitely, but the Hal coffee was actually much weaker than what the machines on Mardi Gras were putting out. The MG coffee was a solid 'average', the Rotterdam coffee was basically just brown water...
@monkeyb18202 жыл бұрын
@@MeowMeow-vo9cj I really like Hal, I hope and pray they don't institute drastic food cutbacks. IMO, cruiselines that did not waste millions of dollars on gokarts and roller coasters are in the best position to keep things at a good level.

On the Koningsdam, while we liked the Grand Dutch Cafe, we thought that the soup and the quiche were really lacking salt. Both the veal dishes were really bizarre - the texture was very similar to the Gerber's baby veal that you feed babies. It was rather offputting.

I’m unclear that you’re on a cruise and eating all of this delicious food and guilt yourself and guilt us about the calories or the quantity? If you have food concerns in this regard, why are you on a cruise ship? Especially one that specializes in delicious sweet treats as in the Dutch Café.
