This is a much better way than using separate serve braid (at least when you're using 40lb main hollow core.) Worked first time for me. Thanks.

The wind-on jig he is using is from BHP Tackle...Basil is his name and he makes great wind-on leaders...expensive but good. I make my own and kind of like this system. On larger line I use a nub knot and then serve using this method then zap-a-gap glue. Then I rub my lucky rabbit's foot on it and am good to go.

I do a lot of hollow core to mono, flouro or solid spectra. I was excited to see a method using the hollow for the serve too. I usually use nub nail connections or service the connection with solid spectra. I test them to detect slippage. Yours slipped! I used 80# hollow and 50# mono and performed what looked like your serve. It is pretty and appears very sano. I mark the mono with a sharpie right outside of the serve and test. Pulling 20# caused a 1/8” slip. Pulling more caused additional movements. I added Tac glue to the serve and re-marked the junction. No slippage even pulling 30#. I realize the typical drag setting for 50# is 12-15#, but going past that at the end of a fight is common so I test with more pull. Thanks I still think this is a very cool new way to splice and serve.

Thanks for testing this. I just add a nail knot on the end of the hollow where it meets the mono and another at the end of the mono inside of the hollow. I caught a 100# tuna on 80 to 80 hollow/leader and had zero slipping. Little bit of Tac glue as well doesnt hurt.

What do you think about if I use 100# mono backing and use my 200# hollow core for a splice? Will it hold? I am thinking running the mono up about 10 feet and do the serve. Just want to make sure this ratio is acceptable. I am doing this on a Penn 80 VISW. Then I will add a topshot of 130# mono with a bridle that I make up and splice that to the 200# hollow core. This will be my planar reel setup for Wahoo .

@MadisonFishing9 жыл бұрын
the serve doesn't hold the line. the serve keeps the end of the braid from moving up the mono and allowing the braid to slip from the end of the mono. the way you show this serve, not done under enough tension to make the mono stretch, will allow the hollow core to move up the mono and release the topshot. as soon as that topshot is put under pressure the mono will stretch and the OD will shrink, that serve will no longer be tight and ineffective. serve under tension and use solid 20 - 50lb braid to serve.
@jeffsmith8255 жыл бұрын
Yeah I worry too that this just adds length to the hollow Spectra but isn't cinching it down to stop it from riding back up the mono. I think it's creates a nice ramp going through guides though which sometimes a thicker serve annoys me with.

If you still have to do a serve to complete the splice it hardly seems to be that beneficial to be hollow core in the first place. For smaller water bass fishing with like 40lb hollow ace and say 12lb mono/fluoro could you get by with just the Chinese-finger-trap of the hollow ace and a few dabs of glue to hold it in place?
@brendanwoerner33524 жыл бұрын
It is not meant for freshwater casting use. This is a trolling technique for big pelagic ocean tuna, marlin
@IlliniDog014 жыл бұрын
@@brendanwoerner3352 I get that, but they make 40lb test. www.tacklewarehouse.com/Power_Pro_Hollow_Ace_Spliceable_Braided_Line_Blue/descpage-PPHS.html?from=gshop Is that test meant for large fish ocean trolling as well? Even so, my question is, can you use the line for freshwater? For smaller species, would the serve be necessary?
@brendanwoerner33523 жыл бұрын
@@IlliniDog01 you can but your wasting money! There’s no point to use hollowcore in a freshwater application. Your better off with straight braid and tie connection.
