Hollow Knight Boss Discussion - Lost Kin

After facing and defeating broken vessel I thought I had to beat lost kin so for about a week I carried on throwing myself at him. I once "defeated" him but one of the infected ghost things got me as he was exploding. That's the only moment in my life that I truly wanted to throw my monitor and myself out of my nearest window.

Agreed Galacta! They do seem to have some sense of honor which is an interesting trait for a Vessel. :) I would love an expansion to Hollow Knight that shed more light on the Vessels themselves. :)

Chan0 he has a lot of health so upgrade your nail he get stunned every nine hits repeat nine attacks until around 1500 health or a little higher or lower is gone.

Hmm. My theory: The broken vessel was indeed a vessel like the knight(player). And that somehow escaped the abyss, however, judging from his size, he left the abyss far earlier than we did. Vessels do grow by the way. In the hunter's journal on the hollow knight, it says: "*Fully grown vessel*. Carries the plague's heart within it's body". So the broken vessel is older than us in the game. I'm guessing around hornet's age. And i think that something killed him in the Ancient Basin, and his shell was taken over by infection when the knight came in. The infection needed something to fight the knight, and they used the shell of that vessel. Pretty grim, if you ask me. Warm hugs from Brazil.

Good call. Pointing out that Vessels do in fact grow with age so Broken Vessel is most likely a Vessel that did survive longer than many others. :) Maybe they were simply killed in the Ancient Basin. The Pale King wouldn't care if they were an impure Vessel so their body was just left in the Ancient Basin. And I agree, it is pretty grim. This poor Vessel. The only remotely positive stories surrounding Vessels are ours and Hornet's and even those are pretty tragic. xD Oh thank you. *hugs* :D

Perpetual Noob and I just thought of something... The Broken Vessel has a nail, the hollow knight has a nail, WE have a nail... Why are vessels granted a nail in the first place? That's... Strange. Very strange indeed.

True. Why do we need weapons at all if we're only meant to be locked away containing the Infection? Hmm. Well, Vessels are meant to contain the Infection. Maybe Vessels were allowed to roam Hallownest and it wasn't until the Hollow Knight failed as a Vessel, that they were bound within the Temple of the Black Egg. Prior to that, Vessels needed a way to defend themselves and they were granted Nails. Huh. Yeah. Interesting idea. :)

...Well, the hollow knight was carrying the (spoiler alert) Radience inside of it, which may be why it grew so much; this may explain the broken vessel's growth, because of it's prolonged exposure to the infection. This may also explain the player's small stature, as we are entirely hollow, meaning that we are immune to the plauge, and therefor, remain small as we are.

The Broken Vessel did escape the abyss, just like your character did. It most likely traveled back down to the Abyss to discover its origins, given its bigger and therefore older than you, and died along the way.

I wish that broken vessle and lost kin were one boss fight, halfing broken vessle's health and make lost kin a second phase, and then, when you enter the dream world, you fight what the broken vessle USED to be before they were infected, having a similar move set...but more flavor, ya know?

You may wish to bring up in a future video that flukenest+shaman stone (when you have shade soul) does 144 damage, enough to kill the collector in ~7 hits and a single watcher knight in 2 hits. A Very powerful combo that helped me beat both fights

Grubsong. Thorns of agony. Weaversong. Quickfocus. Just stay in the corner constantly healing while taking all hits. Thorns of agony will do all the damage you need.

@@PerpetualNoob What you really want to do is the whole 'Weavers supply Hatchlings' setup and hang out in one of the top corners I also brought along: Lv. 3 Grimmchild (he pop the ballon) Thorns of Agony (Really showed those roof spikes whose boss, great use of an extra charm slot)

I added spore shroom, defender's crest and sprint master. fast baby spiders to help get soul with grub song then use a fart cloud as I'm healing to do more damage with thorns of agony as lost kin hits me.

When I first was playing before knowing any of the lore, I noticed the soul gauge was kinda cracked, and often npcs and text would mention venturing below to find something we desire or some missing piece, and when I found the broken vessel in the Ancient Basin, which just from the look of the area I could tell it was some heavy important lore stuff, I was like "=O this must be the missing piece the Knight is looking for, and beating this boss in the dream fight will unlock some kind of true ending" (this was a super blind playthrough at the time btw) and I was so hell-bent on fighting and wanting to defeat it since it was so hard I was convinced it was super important. Then I read the lore n stuff and was like WOW I was off a bit

if you crystal dash into the arena with the defenders crest, you'll get one impact hit, and the defenders crest will chip away at lost kins health all throughout the screech animation. This really helped me win the fight.

I still remember fighting them for the first time in the dream world. Me and my brother were so confused cause the both of us forgotten what the word "kin" meant and it was only afterwards when we were having dinner I realized that. Kin means family. That boss was our lost family. Oops.

You don’t have to jump on all those platforms to get the the Lost Kin - just jump off to the left of the first platform past the mini platforms and you will fall directly to an opening that lets you enter the left side of the room the battle takes place in. This will save you tons of time if you are grinding this fight.

this boss was very easy for me You may be asking “omg how” you see i used the minion build (i had 11 notches) my build was shaman stone grimmchild grubsong (for my spiders) weaversong defenders crest and i focused on dodging while getting my licks in via descending dark (upgraded desolate dive) the i-frames from descending dark were so helpful i had 8 masks and i rushed him down with max dmg descending dark in fact i beat him so fast the balloons barely did anything

One thing to note, when staggered in godhome, he sometimes moves toward you. I think it is the bubbles that push him forward.

Just killed the boss on my first play through, and what a boss it is. I had issues with Brooding Mawlek prior, but this guy consumed legit couple of hrs of tries. Thank you for your guide, I was thinking about trying thorns charm, and after seeing this video, placed it on. It took few more attempts and i finally killed the bastard. I also ran Mantid Pride, Quick Focus and Grubsong, nail got first Pale ore upgrade. Subbed for your channel, definitely underrated for a quality of an info you are providing. Cheers.

Slightly unrelated to the fight itself but i feel i have noticed something about the infected balloons that i havent seen anyone else mention, the infected balloons are most likely shades that were consumed by infection. with their appearances in game only being where infection is present, and multiple vessels have died, their sfx being eerily similar to the siblings, and their visual similarities. first off, we see them in the left side of the ancient basin, and the winged nosk fight. nosk has claimed the lives of many vessels so the appearance of infected shades would make sense. along with it being almost obvious that many shades would be near the abyss in the ancient basin, and could have easily gotten infected as the void inside them actively has the goal of containing infection. notably they do not appear in the forgotten crossroads after the infection, where no vessels would have died. another similarity is that their forms take on a bloated, stubby appearance that shares the basic traits of a shade, they have a horn like growth on the top, tendril like growths on the bottom, and small useless arm-like blobs. all seeming to be bloated features of normal shades. finally, the sounds they make as they drift through the air is practically identical to the noise the siblings make. sorry if this was a bit long winded and off topic.

I only beat this boss because of Spore Shroom. Those balloons hit me every time I tried to heal, often before I could even manage to get one heal finished, even with Quick Focus. Spore Shroom allowed me to completely ignore them, and get three heals in every time I staggered Lost Kin. Combine that with Quick Slash, Shade Cloak and a bit of practice, and Lost Kin went down without too much trouble.

As someone who very recently came back from (finally) defeating this boss, which only too me a few (30ish) tries, ...the battle commentary was incredibly therapeutic. Also, some tips for beating this boss: get AGGRESSIVE with your nail attacks. The farther a distance you keep from that psycho, the more you're backing yourself into a corner and that's when those asshole balloons trap you in. Stay near the middle so you can dodge attacks and have plenty of time to dodge/pop those balloons. Oh, and the Quick Slash charm helped tremendously; I switched to that and suddenly, it got a LOT easier to cut this sucker down.

I thank you a *whole* bunch! The fight went fairly easy after watching your video. Also defender's crest was one of the best charms for me in this battle - the balloons were a huge problem, due to me having a hard time focusing on the battle when there's distractions on the screen (Which is why Hornet thy Second was a huge problem until I learned I can use spells, especially abyss shriek and shade soul, to get the spike balls out of the way). Another thing I found useful is shade cloak - dashing through the lost kin would do damage from the cloak, as well as the trail of defender's crest!

Somehow, before I even finished this video I beat Lost Kin in one go. The charms I had on were: Void heart, Unbreakable Heart, Unbreakable Strength, Quick Slash, Defender's Crest, and Lifeblood Heart plus the Pure Nail and every upgrade and all that other good combat stuff. I was super surprised when I had beaten the boss on my first try. I thought after reading a whole lot about the boss and my experience with Broken Vessel I was thinking "jesus im never gonna win it" and somehow I beat it in under 5 minutes. I'm just stunned to say the least.

Oh my god i struggled for so long on this fight and the spore shroom + defender's crest made it so much easier! My charms were sharp shadow, steady body, grub song, quick focus, shape of unn, spore shroom and defender's crest. This combination made it so so easy, can't recommend it enough!

The thing I found most frustrating was that 90% of the time my defenders charm killed the balloons. However that 10% fail was always when i was trying to heal. Or when I had 1 hp left. I probably should have left and came back but I stayed and about 3 hrs later I walked away the victor. Shadow cloak would have made it so much easier. I wish I had know about your channel when I first atarted the game. Would have saved me lots of heartache.

Here is a list of the charms i used, wich made the fight a piece of cake: Spore shroom Longnail Defender's crest Baldur shell (remember to repair it after every battle) Thorns of agony + Any other charm, if you have enough notches With this combination i was able to easily beat Lost Kin right after Broken Vessel

Your video of this fight is a perfect example of why I dislike Quick Slash. Don't get me wrong, it's a powerful charm, but it's WAY too powerful. The only reason you can facetank bosses is because of that charm. It's mostly useful during Platforming (Particularly in the PoP), but is absolutely broken in combat. Lost Kin is arguably my favorite boss fight. He is the offensive Dream Boss, with Failed Champion being the Defensive Boss, and Soul Tyrant being... well Soul Tyrant is being annoying. His attacks are quick and powerful, but simple to understand. I actually beat him earlier then I could have, due to Defender's Crest, what I call "Stench Warfare". What makes it even better is my nail wasn't even fully upgraded at the time. Good fight and good video. Also, do you plan on covering the "Dream Warriors" fights that are spread throughout Hollow Knight and are also used to gather Essence, as they do technically count as bosses. I also hope you will cover the Grimm Troupe and Hidden Dreams content.

I'd never thought to call Quick Slash "broken" though you might be right about that. I do use it for a lot of fights. Since we gain Soul whenever we strike an enemy with our Nail, Quick Slash grants us greater Soul generation too. More Soul generation means more healing or more spells. Quick Slash also grants us higher damage output (obviously) either through our Nail or spells. Hmm. Quick Slash might need to be tweaked due to all of the utility it provides. Maybe change it to cost four charm notches rather than three. Yeah, wow. We get a lot for those three notches. :) Huh. That's a cool way of looking at the original Dream Bosses. :) Yeah. Defender's Crest is soooo good against Lost Kin. It definitely carried me through my second playthrough's fight against them. I had a weaker Nail and fewer hitpoints and no Quick Focus but because of Defender's Crest's aura, I was able to beat Lost Kin. Those Infected Balloons really impact the whole fight. I don't plan on covering the Dream Warriors but I do plan on covering the Hidden Dreams and Grimm Troupe content. :) I will be covering everything the wiki considers a Boss (and one extra "Boss"). :)

TY for responding. And yes, the reason Quick Slash is considered Broken is because it enables face-tanking strategies, and well over doubles your DPS with the nail. (Also, Quick Slash, prior to Hidden Dreams, costed TWO charm notches, not three. Think about that for a while. It's been nerfed once already and it's still broken). It is insanely useful for Pogo-strategies, mostly in the Path of Pain and Colosseum, especially if you combine it with Mark of Pride and Longnail Also, using Quick Slash, Stalwart Shell, Thorns of Agony, Defender's Crest, and Joni's Blessing lets you basically hug bosses and face-tank them to death. And yeah, a lot of 3 notch charms are very powerful. Mark of Pride, Quick Slash, Quick Focus are the main examples. Also, using Stalwart Shell can help with tanking strats, as it increases your invulnerability time by quite a bit. It's also useful for recovering from a hit against fast bosses like Mantis Lords, Lost Kin, Hornet, or a specific boss from Grimm Troupe.

Holy crap I didn't even notice that Quick Slash's notch cost was increased. XD But yeah, those are good points. Quick Slash does give us a ton of options for strategies that should probably not be nearly as deadly or, at least, offensive. And that's a good point: Stalwart Shell is a good option for really quick bosses. But let's not go crazy with the nerfs. xD I think Mark of Pride and Quick Focus are just right. Having extra Nail range is nice but not necessary and being able to heal twice as quick still requires us to need healing. I think that's what makes Quick Slash so powerful. It's offensive. It makes us devastatingly strong. The other two are not exactly offensive and therefore, in my mind, not overpowered. What do you think? I am enjoying having this dialogue. :)

Quick Focus and Mark of Pride are fine as they are IMO. Both are expensive but powerful. Quick Slash is the only one that might need changes. I actually found Stalwart Shell to be very useful in general due to the invulnerability increase. If you manage to get hit it gives you more time in which you can't take damage. Useful for endurance fights. I'm also enjoying this quite a bit, and am glad you are as well. I'm looking forward to your discussion on Grimm Troupe, especially for that extra "Boss". Also interested in your strategies for Grey Prince Zote and Radiance. Should be a good surprise.

For anyone seeing this comment here is some advice for charms and a stratagy: Defenders crest, Glowing womb, Weaversong, Grimmchild, Grubsong. So here is the strategy get crystal dash and get up in the very top corners of the room use crystal dash to stay on the wall like a forever charged super saiyen and let the minions do the work while defenders crest keeps infected ballons at bay

I had SO much trouble finding any pale ore in my entire playthrough, and by the time I had collected 2 masks and a vessel, I still had a sharpened nail. Even right now I still do, so I don't think facetanking is the way to go. Maybe flukenest, shaman stone, and soul eater... Great vid nonetheless! :D

You also might want to mention how dream warriors get a health buff each time you upgrade your nail, so that people might know to delay their reforging until most of the hard dream bosses are already defeated with spell builds.

That is a good point Joey and I'll admit that I didn't know that was a thing until long after making the Dream Boss videos. But it is very true an an interesting feature that Dream Boss's health increase as our Nail gets stronger. It's odd to me because then spells are stronger earlier on. I'm wondering if that's related to the lore or if it's purely a gameplay decision by Team Cherry.

if you have defenders crest on it'll pop the balloons before they can do damage to you (unless you jump into them).

I think the "Accept" thing is more us accepting an apology from that vessel, they were dead and then infected, forced to fight us against their will (which, mind you, they were not supposed to have in the first place). It could be many things, sure, but along with an offered apology, I think they wanted to be accepted by another vessel as kin (the fact that the dream version of Broken Vessel is titled Lost Kin makes that pretty clear, I think). But that's just how I read that detail, who besides Team Cherry actually knows what it means.

This was the easiest dream boss for me, but it wasn't an easy fight. I wish I'd known about the Defenders crest. I found the trick was to spam shade soul whenever I could, because I wasn't using the soul to heal. I equipped Joni's blessing, quick slash and unbreakable strength. I had the coiled nail, and I used the shade cloak to dash through his ground attacks.

My winner combo for this boss in the end was spore shroom, quick focus and the piercing dash one. Simply dashin through his attacks and getting to the other side of the arena allowed me to focus and kill all the nearby ballons, and he took a ton of damage every time he jumped at me inside the poison cloud. I mainly regained soul from killing the balloons.

The Lost Kin is such an interesting boss because they seem to be the real threat (because they are the Vessel trying to kill us) but the real threat is from those Balloons. Without those enemies messing with us, this fight would be so much simpler. I like your solution: dash through Lost Kin and then kill the Balloons with your Nail or with your healing. Good stuff. :)

You can cheese both fights by staying on the wall with ch (crystal heart Charms that help with the cheese Defenders crest and dreamshe😊ld to kill balloons. And any summon charm to kill boss

My theory is that Pale King chose to permanently seal the door to the Abyss only *after* multiple other vessels (excluding the chosen vessel) had escaped. We know that one of the escapees made it to outside of Hallownest (the player), one fled to the Ancient Basin, another to Greenpath (Hornet’s room), and many others fell to Nosk. I think the question then becomes: Did the King know that other vessels had escaped? Does he have anything to do with the deaths of the vessels in Ancient Basin and Greenpath?

Extra tip: if you have the shade cloak, use it!!!! You’ll just be able to dash through the ground attacks and don’t have to be in the air. Also, you can heal, but uh, it’s complicated...

You can get back to him very quickly by jumping almost to the left edge of the dreamworld from the starting platform and waiting to see the bossroom then just slide down the wall and dash inside. Takes about 5 seconds from the time you lose to him to the time you are starting the fight again.

I beat that fucko with the mark of pride and the dream shield and with the channelled. Lost kin is so fast and aggressive and his attacks border on unfair, so I gave up on even trying to heal, which is why I ran the shield, that shit was really useful for getting rid of the balloons and dealing the occasional bit of damage. The most useful strategy, however, is to spam the shit out of Desolate Dive. The invincibility is a godsend and the AoE is much bigger than it seems, making it perfect for putting out damage when he uses his slam and it is also really handy for clearing away balloons. Also, if you jump off the very first platform to the right when entering the dream realm you can save yourself some time. But the most important part of the Lost Kin fight is to not give up. After dying, it only takes a couple of seconds to get back to the arena with no penalty, so just throw yourself at him until you get that Hollow Knight boss groove going where you know how to best dodge attacks and slip in your own hits. Lost Kin is definitively borderline unfair though, his jump and balloons are basically impossible to predict and it takes a lot of patience to take him down. I should know, it took over an hour and dozens of deaths before I scraped by with one last hit point.

Thanks for that video, it was enormously helpful. However, I decided to try my own build first, but considering your advice and tactics. The success was surprising and absolutely incredible, both our ideas combined! I used Grimmchild, Spore, Defender’s Cresr, unbreakable strength (absolutely love it, particularly in combination with unbreakable heart which makes the overly difficult sections of the game a lot less overwhelming; I wasn’t sure about taking the latter off, but it was a good decision), and I also used grub song and nailmaster's glory, though I didn’t get to actually use a nail art. That was... WOW. I got hit a lot but healed successfully and the areal dmg charms were my salvation! Seriously, this combo trivialised the fight! I beat Lost Kin on FIRST fucking try (!!!) and it took me about 30-40 (!!!) seconds! I’m not bragging, I’m just still absolutely baffled. It was incredible - I’d never expected that! I was dumbfounded when that horrendous thing suddenly exploded so soon, because I’m really not THAT good and I already found broken vessel very difficult, I needed about 15-20 times and it was very frustrating at the time. If not for double jump I would’ve postponed it, like Mantisses and Elder Hu, which were the bane of my existence. The only thing that was even worse was mantis lords on which I gave up for a while after endless tries getting very close only to be finally smashed near the end of the fight. I fought lost kin with spiral nail, all three soul vessels and all spells upgraded though I used just a few spells on it (only shadow soul and I soon gave up on that b/c it’s moving everywhere so fast and they kept missing it). The poop cloud (and to a lesser extent, Grimm child) were super helpful, particularly after healing as they indeed took care of ~90% of those annoying infection blobs. I also had shadow cloak and dashed through Lost kin a lot, though I decided against sharp shadow and I’m glad I did. The passive dmg is way better, esp. since it’s combined with healing. Sharp shadow tempts me to try and dash through more often, ending up running or walking into that pest when it made a sudden move. Against broken vessel dream shield was surprisingly helpful (balloons!) but it really isn’t necessary with spore and crest. Just a waste of three notches that are better used on u. strength which helped extremely. So I guess this build is really good. It wasn’t for me admittedly - still got hit a lot with 8 masks, so my attempt wasn’t elegant either but it was effective against that pest and that’s what matters for me. I think I’ll even try this build for TMG, as he’s very aggressive and moves around a lot as well. Maybe I’ll survive for more than 10 seconds then. I saw a video suggesting a spell build and spamming abyss shrieks on TMG while he’s in the air blowing his coat to a ball and doing that multiple fire ball attack but first the upward and downward spells don’t work reliably on my controller with ⭕️. Maybe that’s the problem why many ppl dislike those spells. Omg but when I just remembered I can change controls to my liking (though I won’t do that b/c it’s driving me crazy particularly in stressful fights when I’m already used to the default controls, I’ll end up always pressing the wrong (old) buttons so that’s not an option for me, unless I do it early on) BUT while I looked for an option to improve sensitivity, I just discovered I can also use R1 for spells as well! Yes, I know.LOL 😂 Didn’t know it. The game either didn’t ever mention it in tutorials or I totally overlooked this information. However, that’s fantastic because I just tried and the other two spells seem to work just fine that way. Otherwise with ⭕️ it only worked 40-70% of the time (and it wasn’t just me being bad at it because I ran around farming soul and practiced a lot watching the timing and direction meticulously and it still just didn’t work reliably!) What a relief! Now I can use spells in my tactic, finally! Because I’d actually love that if not for the bad controls. Oooooh how much easier and more fun it could’ve been 😂 ! (I just got the game recently.) Now seems to work properly, thank goodness, now I can try the cheap spell tactic on TMG! But if it doesn’t work I’ll try my lost kin build against him, too. I’ll tell about the results in your TMG video then. And now that I downed lost kin so easily (wish I had shadow cloak for Hornet and not afterwards - THAT would’ve been so much less of an endless frustrating horror drag! I endured frustration and fought Elder Hu and the Mantis Lords literally dozens of times without success (finally beat Hu recently) but Hornet made me leave the game alone for several days. I hated that fight the first time and it was even worse the second time. Also broken vessel was really horrible, almost as bad as Hornet. And I made the same mistake and tried Lost Kin right away. Which wasn’t THAT frustrating b/c it’s only a dream boss but still totally overwhelming. I’m so excited I finally managed to beat a really hard boss on my first attempt! That feels great! Thanks a lot for your fantastic videos, they by far offer the most detailed information and analysis and I absolutely love watching them! Also, I like your voice. It’s so calming (very helpful when you’re stressed out from a difficult boss fight, stuck and totally frustrated) and pleasant (no annoying Modulation bounces like TV ad speakers and tv announcers do, many KZbinrs parrot this speech style and it’s super annoying). This guy is the only dream boss I've killed so far, and yeah, even with that, I will say he's probably the toughest. I will say however, along with the defenders crest/spore charm combo, another little trick I learned that really helped was that when he does the slam attack, if your right next to him, but still outside of the area where he hits you, the infection misses you entirely and you score some free hits on him, even more with the defenders charm active. Or as a chance to heal. I was really to hyped up to heal in that fight, but I'm pretty sure that most of the time he leapt away from you if you were nearby after the slam, giving you a chance to heal even if you don't have quick focus attached.

I was actually able to cheese this fight with a minion build, camping on the wall with the Crystal Heart (Weaversong, Grimmchild, Glowing Womb, Defender’s Crest (makes hatchlings explode) and Grubsong) It was a little finicky, but as long as your Grimmchild stays near you, it combined with the exploding hatchlings take care of the Balloons, while your Weaverlings kill the lost kin. Not fast, but effective!

A little tip for this boss that I think might work lost kin loves his infected balloons a lot! So so far I have been using grimchild and glowing womb let me explain just like lost kin can overwhelm you with his infected balloons grimchild and glowing womb will do the same to lost kin. If your nail is upgraded to a really high level this combination will work with your nail damage and provide some serious firepower! Grimchild and glowing womb will damage lost kin a ton and make this fight a lot faster for any other noobs like me who get hit a lot in this fight. Edit: I just defeated lost kin! That was unexpected!

Steady Body did it for me. Allows you to stay in tight and get some precise hits in the opening after a slam attack. That with Quick Slash and Long Nail was the combo I needed. Thorns helped too.

You could use quick focus and defenders crest to heal while the broken vessel is recovering. Defenders crest 1 shots the balloons giving you a lot of time to heal.
