The truely groundbreaking thing about Hollow Knight is that it doesn't have to come up with new concepts to be an amazing game. Each concept and design is perfected and it combines all of them into a harmonizing experience. It plays a brilliant song out of notes already played.

this game has a level of polish that shows the creators really cared about their product and not just the profit. You know how you break all the signs and things in one area and come back to see them fixed? You know that if you enter an area just right you'll see bugs repairing the things you broke? What I also really love about this game is the little things they do. I don't know if this is a spoiler but me and my friend really loved how they designed Cornifer. The map was like our number 1 priority throughout the game. The way you need to find him, follow his map trail and hear his humming in order for you to get the map of the area was our favorite mini game. It really played with our heads. **finds a new area** Me: This area looks pretty neat. Friend: Can you check the map real quick? Game: *You have no map for this area* Me and my friend: **triggered** COOOOOOORRRRRNIIIIIFEEEERRRRR!!! We also really love that they gave a little story to our fast travel buddy. This game really does a good job of making standard game mechanics and putting their own twist to them, making them more memorable, interesting and fun.

Keith Redacted I know that I’m a bit late to the party here, but one of the most influential moments in this game to me was when I found Cornifer hiding on the outskirts of Deepnest. He didn’t have any of his normal queues, no humming, nothing. That terrified me. I went into the next room, heard the creepy sounds of the area, turned around, and decided I’d come back later.

Can we just appreciate that for a 15 euro/dollar game you get content equal to at least 30 hours and not even including the free dlc in july. Normally i am not a fan of metroidvania games, however this one is truly an exception. I love the dark souls series and there is one thing i can say for sure, this is for me the bloodborne alternative pc gamers needed. Almost every aspect of the game is perfect and there are little to no bugs. This is the level of perfection every game should strive for, which i think is often very lacking when it comes to 'modern' or even many older games. My favourite platform, metroidvania and indie game of all time. For me it is already GOTY 2017 and i dont think that will change. And keep in mind that i have not even finished the game yet. Oh yes almost forgot, how staggering is it that only 3 people worked on this game, can we just appreciate that for just a moment. Thank you for reading btw hope you have a great day

I know I'll get some backlash from this, but Hollow Knight is probably my favorite game ever. Now, I'll be honest, it's my first metroidvania, and I haven't played several new games due to lack of having the newest consoles, but Hollow Knight's soundtrack, atmosphere, combat, and level design are all spectacular, and I never had a dull moment, even when I was lost. Sure, other games may have better graphics and mechanics, but no other single-player game has kept me entertained and wanting to come back day after day like this game has. Yea, I have more hours on several other games, but that's because they are multiplayer games I can enjoy with friends. Nearly every other game I have ever played as much as Hollow Knight I get burned out on, and can't play it again for weeks. However, this game, even if I don't feel like playing for a couple days, always feels fresh and fun. At the moment my highest percent completion is 104%. And that's on my first ever playthrough! And I can't forget the DLC! Free content with amazing bosses and chilling themes, with the biggest and best coming soon, who can't love it?! This game is a masterpiece in my eyes and my go-to choice for a fun and relaxing (although sometimes frustrating) way to spend my evenings day after everloving day.

Sometimes it feels like this game was just made to appeal to everything I love. Moody backgrounds, gorgeous scenery, beautifully simplistic animation, lovably lethal character designs, an absolute masterclass in level/world design, hauntingly beautiful music and atmosphere, a sense of overarching interconnectivity in the world, NPC's who consistently charm and surprise, a story that allows the audience to draw their own conclusions, an absolutely sprawling lore that continually raises more questions than answers...all for the cool low price of 15 bucks. I know everyone's already gushed, but I needed to too :)
@Paradox10127 жыл бұрын
This game's lore actually made me cry, not because it's an emotional experience, rather the opposite, it builds up the conclusion of a world. The world that has turned "hollow". it made me slowly realize the stories of the past and made me realize what i was, that everything was for the ideals and morals of every character in the game. even ones that do not appear in the game "present" or "alive" if you will. as well as the fact that each ending represents a moral choice put into the (spoilers) programming of the void that you are. made me feel emotions even after this world ended. The DLC that's coming out will explain the story of hollow nest. I can not wait for it. :D

There was this game I’ve heard about 2 years ago. It was called Hollow Knight and people were saying it was pretty good. When I bought it on sale for about 4$ or something, started the game and found myself on the King’s Pass edge, then falling to the Dirtmouth and jumping into the well to find myself in the Crossroad... I sure as hell didn’t know what an awesome and expansive journey is ahead of me. Today my hype for the Silksong, a game made by 3 people, is only equal to that for Cyberpunk2077, which sure as hell saying something.

The unusual thing about this game is that there didn't *seem* to be a "beaten" path. On my first playthrough, I didn't even fight the Gruz Mother for almost a third of the game. There was so much to explore that I wandered right out of Dirtmouth and the Forgotten Crossroads and scarcely returned. It's amazing how different the game can be each time you play it through.
@thecrimsonaxe60375 жыл бұрын
This game is amazing because of the fantastic atmosphere and immersion, but I wouldn't like it without fantastic controlls and movement. The fact that your upgrades aren't merely "Open certain doors" keys but useful movement upgrades that can be used in regular gameplay is terrific. I really wouldn't want to continue if I wasn't rewarded with more awesome movement options.

I picked this game up on a whim during a Steam Sale because videogamedunkey showed a picture of its cover art when talking about games he liked. I haven't enjoyed a game this much since my first playthrough of Dark Souls. The world is the perfect balance of depressing and charming, and so interesting to uncover. It rewards exploration just enough to keep you exploring, but not too much so as to make it feel unfulfilling. The soundtrack is just amazing, I purchased it along with the game and I've been listening to it at every opportunity since I got it. Everything about this game is so immersive and enjoyable. There are very few moments in the game that feel cheap or unfair, and I never feel like I die because of the controls or the environment. Every victory feels rewarding. Every fight feels so well tuned and tight. Every area feels so unique and beautiful in its own way and offers its own sorts of challenges and mechanics. The story goes hand in hand with exploration, and that's how stories are supposed to be. I think what I love most about this game, and Dark Souls as well, is that it feels like I'm exploring a world that's actually alive, with a rich history and backstory that you get to experience in much the same way that you experience real life. This game is nearly perfect in every way and I can't sing its praises enough. I can't wait to see what Team Cherry brings us next. They've given us a true masterpiece.

The subdued use of color in this game was perfect. It really shows they had a confidence in what they were doing. A lot of hand drawn games are eagerly vivid with it and love to shock and awe, but Hollow Knight used the somber tones for an ambience that builds. When shocks of color do come, it creates a much more distinct impression that’s rooted in a place. Lots of character.

After over 2yrs this review is still 100% valid. I got Hollow Knight on a sale back in August 2018, I even not knowingly bought it on the same day Godmaster released. My first playthrough without even touching any content packs clocked at over 50 hours when I got the Hollow Knight ending, and little did I know back then that I barely scratched the surface. Right now, with over 450 hours playtime on Steam I still play it - not even because I have a lot of stuff to do (even though I stil have some... troubling things in Godhome to complete), but just because it's such a great game that I play through it again and again on a regular basis. And the devs? They are even better! For just 15 bucks they sell a complete, huge game and all the content packs. But even Team Cherry isn't perfect - they don't know how to make DLCs, so they killed the Hornet DLC. Now they expect me to accept that they are making a full sequel to Hollow Knight instead of a DLC?! And they are even still giving it for free to Kickstarter backers?! But seriously, Hollow Knight is a game so good that I can't even think of any flaw it has! The devs just casually decided to transform a DLC into a full sized sequel, probably even bigger than the original game, how could you not love them? Now if you will excuse me, I shall go back to hurting myself again and again, or as the game calls it - I shall go back to doing all bound Pantheons.

Thanks man, your Let's Play has really satisfied my desire to see a complete, 100% playthrough of HK after 2 other Let's Players simply either got fed up with the game (EggDaddy) and gave up, or are just not done with the game yet. I really got to give you props for your endurance on the DLC boss, but I do wish for a video where you complete absolutely EVERYTHING in the game. Namely the journal and some special, odour-related areas. Hope this video comes about, and hope you have a wonderful time with the future DLCs. I'd be waiting for them too :)

I also didn´t have that many problems with the soul master. I died 2 or 3 times, but that´s it. The lost kin on the other hand can burn in hell. I wasted at least 2 hours on this guy, because I wanted to beat him with my own skill. I think he is impossible that way. At the end I asked google, changed 1 (!!!) talisman and beat him on the first try. A boss should be doable without the exactly right gear and shouldn´t become a pushover because of 1 talisman.

I like Hollow Knight more than Super Metroid and Castlevania Symphony of the Night. I think it's the best Metrovania. Not only is the exploration great but it's got the best combat , best reasons to revisit areas, some of the best platforming sections, etc. It takes a lot of what's superb in a vast array of games and makes them into a super game lol. Shit it even takes the influence of Kirby's True Arenas to make one of the coolest segments to boss rushing. Controversial but provides even more to an already satisfying game.

It's a really good game, but saying better even than Super Metroid... no way man, one simple issue there, in this game you can feel lost so easy if you don't get the map for whatever reason, in super metroid you never feel that.

I finish Super Metroid being a kid in the 90's without internet or magazine, not because I'm a pro gamer, it's because super metroid delivery every item in a methodical way, after getting and upgrade you feel when to use it, in Hollow Knight i spend at least 2 hours of gameplay wandering around where the fuck to go, and after i got and importan upgrade, say like doble jump it's pretty much the game saying, Ok dude you got doble jump, now fuck you. Of course this is my opinion base in my first playtrough, but i have to tell you that i play almost every metroidvania game out there.

@ Well, I only had to use the walkthrought once for Hollow Knight, and that was because of those bouncing mushrooms. I'm probably gonna use it more to complete 112%, but in super metroid, just progressing forced me to check walkthrought very often. Super metroid is one of the most frustrating games I've ever played precisely because of the obscure progression, and the god-awful controls don't help. At least the soundtrack and ambiance is extremely good, but hey that's also the case for Hollow knight.

Hollow Knight is amazing, but I do have a few issues with it. (A) The game makes no effort to "funnel" players in the early and mid-game; i.e. it doesn't indicate where players should go to make progress, not even in broad terms. This can make a lot of the early exploration a series of dead ends that isn't really satisfying. (B) For all the retooling of the Mapping system Hollow Knight implements (where you have to buy maps, then map markers, and even a compass and quill), it'd have been really nice to be able to purchase custom markers for indicating "dead ends" and blocked pathways that you suspect require abilities acquired later to unlock. It would cut down on a lot of the mid-late game backtracking. (C) The 'secret area' (you know if you've played) necessary to unlock the true ending is utter bullshit and is such an abrupt change of pace and design from the rest of the game that pushes the trial-and-error platforming past the breaking point. There are some charm combinations you can use to 'cheese' this area, but ultimately it's incredible frustrating and mars and otherwise consistently excellent level design. Still one of my favorite games of the year. Love it.
@ytoon30317 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Groenendaal I 100% agree with you, the constant backtracking because you don't know where to go is really something that annoyed me more than once, especially when you found out that you miss literally this big ass switch that unlock the new area, and you just live because you thought you haven't the right tool yet in the other end team cherry packed there game with so much content that even when I was totally lost and backtracked like crazy, I still founded lots of stuff I missed before, which felt really good and make worth it the backtracking The fact that you can't pin points of interest was a real pain in the ass during my whole playtrough, and truly the biggest problem of this game I've not complete the [you now what] yet, I'm only at the middle but so far it seems really bullshit to me, the platforming wasn't the main focus the whole game and now the game is just super meat boy, with difficulty spikes that makes no fucking sense, blind jumps, super tight paterns and really few bench to save your progress this is such bullshit because through the game platforming never was a big deal, it was just little sections of difficulty spikes you had to go through and it felt good but here it's just a long-ass section that never end with a difficulty we've never get, this feel just so out of place, the final place should test all your skills you've get through the game, but here, one more time, we never get such things I guess they wanted to do a place filled with ennemies in the first place but haven't enough time or money to do all the assets, so they just did a hardcore platforming zone, and even if that actually pushes your skills to the limit, it's not something you were used to despite all of this, I still kindda like this place but in the same time really hate it I also totally despise funkerman's boss fight (I guess it's it name), it was such a poorly designed boss fight, which is such a big gap between it and the other ones, wich are all masterfully designed boss (maybe the cristal guardian wasn't that good, but he wasn't too bad) also what's the moment you liked the most in the game? For me I think it was zote's boss fight, when you finally get to the end of the warrior's trial, you see this big build-up to the final challenge, to finally see zote, and just when you thought he'll go serious and destroy you, he appear to be the weakest ennemy you've ever encounter, the fight is just a joke, he can't even hurt you but it felt so fresh and unexpected, and it was such a relief, to not have to face any powerful foe, which may have make you lose the trial
@BVSSIC7 жыл бұрын
I don't think the place you mention is much of a design difference seeing how much it resembles the dream realms you occasionally get thrown in. Also, that place wasn't actually that difficult. The custom pins would be a great idea. I'll hit the team up and see if they like the idea or not ^^.
@gabrielgroenendaal30077 жыл бұрын
I meant gameplay design, not visual design. It is in this area that the game takes a sudden and unwelcome turn into Super Meat Boy territory with difficult trial-and-error platforming. The rest of the game simply does not prepare you for this kind of challenge and the level of precision and timing necessary to overcome it.
@android19willpwn7 жыл бұрын
(A) I actually kind of like that. Having a bunch of places I know I'll be able to get to once I can just do this one thing makes the hunt for upgrades more engaging and the acquisition of upgrades more rewarding and exciting, however... (B) 100% agree there. If I had to make a complaint about the game that wasn't one of the few bullshit bosses (god damn Radiance) or how much of a pain in the ass Deepnest is after the first time, it would be this. (C) While I agree that that area is a drastic shift in gameplay focus, I don't dislike it. Very few parts could be considered "trial and error" (and most of those that can are in the early stages when you're learning about the sawblades). It's absolutely a brutal difficulty spike and that can put people off, but the platforming controls are easily tight enough to support that kind of implementation and the dreams are pretty much *always* brutal difficulty spikes (meaning someone put off by such things probably won't get to that area anyway) so it's not like it's surprising.

RippleNipple I just wanna ask as to how far are you in the game? And by most enemies I assume the regular ones you come across, they are supposed to be that way considering this is a metroidvania game. With your character bouncing back, it's there as a little mechanic to discourage spamming and add consistency to the fact that you can bounce off spikes and such, plus there is a charm that lets you remove the knockback.
