Cheers Carlos... I also had a few drops on the Rode, particularly when more than a few steps away in distance. Although, when it worked, I generally preferred the sound quality of the Rode, the Hollyland was very close. The LARK150 also never missed a beat in the month I've been trying it... so that is the deal breaker for me. The Hollyland transmitter batteries don't last quite as long, but at least they charge easily whenever you're not shooting... or over lunch !!!

I heard a difference between the Rode/Rode and Hollyland/Rode pairing at the end. The noise floor on the Hollyland was seemingly non-existent. I had to put on headphones to confirm this. Though when I listen a second time, there seems to be a noise gate on the Hollyland. Is that in the device or was that added in post?
@extrashot
@extrashot 3 жыл бұрын
The only thing I did in post was apply a 'levels' filter in FCPX to stop anything clipping over 0. This was done over the whole video at the end, so it should of been applied to everything equally. I'm sure a skilled audio engineer would be able to get better results out of every unit tested. The trouble is... I'm coming at this from a cameras point of view!

Fantastic review once again. I have the Rode Go in my hand and have not opened it yet but now I think I've made the right decision. These reviews often imply that big names are big for good reasons. Not so easy to take the crown away no matter how fierce the rivalry. You really need to create an outstanding product to beat the incombent.

Amazing that we are at a place and time in this business when someone of your experience and skill is interested enough in the technology to make a high quality production out of a simple gear review. Just awesome! I was not even aware of the Hollyland Lark 150 until I saw it mentioned in a previous video and then found this review. Just in time for an upcoming project. Hope Amazon can get it here in time. Thanks for taking the time. Clearly you have worked with much higher end gear than a DSLR over the years. But here we are in 2022. The future has spoken.

Very informative and well put together video I was just about to buy the Synco but after watching this video it has made me realise it would not better than my current unit which is a cheap UHF system which works fine but from time to time it will loose signal or pick up interference which always seem to be at a crucial part which can be very annoying🤬🤬 but your video is the first video I've seen to actually show the synco product properly which many others haven't 👍 Thank you as you have saved me wasting my money 🙏🙏

I've watched a couple of reviews on the Hollyland, you are the only one to mention the battery inside the case. Clearly the case must be taken with you on a day in the field. You didn't mention Hollyland has a way to output in mono, with the second track as a -6dB backup.

Nice review the mics on the lark 150 are fine for me (given they are included) and sounded the same as the build in one for normal use. The rode lav i also prefer and your method of mixing them makes sense to me. Where i think you could have spend a little more time is how easy the lark is including the -6 dB feature, mono or stereo mixing, hot swapping and line and headphone out on receiver. Personally like they added the 2 lav mics but its the component that could be upgraded. Lastly all parts can and will be updated by the usb-c charging box. Now i am a little biased since i was beta testing for hollyland on these units.
@extrashot
@extrashot 3 жыл бұрын
All good points Daniel, and you're right, the -6db ST mode is a useful thing I should have included. It'll be interesting to see what Hollyland are able to upgrade but that charging case is a genius design... the form factor is a big thing for me and the way I often have to work alone. Good work with the beta testing, it looks like this was their first go at a dedicated audio device... but they nailed it !!!

Fantastic thorough review dude, and a subscription earned! I'm deep into my research of these wireless options at the minute. I don't know if I'll really need to mic and mix two talent, but I figure I may as well buy something with that option. You would think Rode will bring out a two transmitter version at sone point. Have you seen the Picomic? It's by far the smallest - but I would imagine sound quality takes a hit for that. Would love to see how it compares.

Nice review, thanks. I've just tested the Synco G1 (A2) with a Lumix GH5 for two days. Lowering the Synco gain to the minimum, and lowering the GH5 gain to -6dB (-3dB without lav mic) it works nice, without background appreciable noise (or very low). I never experimented sound cuts in normal conditions.

Great review. I got the Sokani UHF system for $100. It was ok, a bit difficult to get the right audio levels set up, so I bought the Rode Go II. I'm using my beloved Panasonic Lumix DMC G7, and the Rode was a DISASTER. LOUD RF interference, no matter what I did, it was always there, sometimes barely audible and then sometimes like a plane flying over. I called Rode and they pretty much told me the Go II is incompatible with my DSLR. They need to have a list of DSLR's it won't work with, am returning it. Will have a look at the Hollyland and go thru Amazon so I can return it if it does the same things.

I don't use wireless, I use Tascam recorders. I have tried lav mics in a wide price range. One of the best sounding mics for my recorders was also one of the cheapest. I have some costing up to $125. My go-to mics are Boya BY-M1's that cost about $20. .. the new series of these mics isn't good, but the older and cheaper has a good sound.

Listening on my HD650 headphones, I hear a high pitch distortion (whilst speaking and shortly afterwards - but it disappears during silence) at 15m13secs on the Hollyland. Shame - as I love the look, usability and charging case. Based on your video, it would be the Rode for me.

Following your comment, I went back to the rushes and you're right, there is something going on in the clip at 15:13. It's strange because it's not on the other clips I've got with the Hollyland. When I use my COS11 it's perfectly clean, but when I use the Rode Lav it sounds like bad noise reduction! It's very slight... and only on the clip with the Rode mic. Not sure what that could be...?
@elementary8963
@elementary8963 3 жыл бұрын
@@extrashot I may have the answer. I thought about this after I posted my comment yesterday. A few years back I bought two Rode Rx/Tx packs. During my initial testing, I noticed interference similar to the clip at 15.13. I nearly instantly returned both packs - but then I tried the units with a Sennheiser ME2 lav mic. Perfect audio. So I ordered a couple more ME2s (I found them on sale at the time for £59 each) and I keep the bundled Rode Lavs as spares. So, all good then? Not quite. Just to check, I went back and listened to the Hollyland with your COS 11 mic (a very nice lav - wish I had one!) - and again, you can hear the same interference in the audio - although it's much less than with the Rode lav. That said, you can probably eliminate it in post and I don't know if you had you mobile phone nearby or if there might have been anything else that might be causing the issue. Finally, thank you for making these videos - like you mentioned, it's better to have an soundperson to ensure the best possible audio is recorded. However, there isn't always the budget for a sound person - and that's when reliable, fool proof, easy to use sound kits is very important. My current solution is the Tascam DR60DMK2 as you can power it off a USB power brick, it has camera feed audio output and it records two channels of audio - the second being 10db lower than the first.....it works really well, but I am looking for an additional much smaller solution.
@extrashot
@extrashot 3 жыл бұрын
@@elementary8963 Thanks for the expert analysis... I also suspect it's based on interference from something. When the Synco started playing up I went around my kit in the room counting what devices used 2.4GHz, Apart from my phone, iPad and laptop, I also realised my camera had it turned on... and two of my lights... so that was six other devices in close proximity to the wireless mics. I turned most of them off and was still having problems. Ironically, the biggest 'leaky' culprits were the lights... and I never even use the WiFi on those... so that's been permanently turned off. At one point, I discovered that if the light controller was near my iPad, it would completely wipe it's connection out! When I use the COS11 on the LARK150 they now sound very clean to me... but then my ears are getting old !!! Thanks for your help.

I watched this video after I’d ordered the Synco G2(A2) for £85 from eBay. I opened them very carefully in case they were going back! They’re not! The RF noise you got was truely horrible and gets on my nerves much more than the hiss noise floor. I’ve only just realised you were testing the G1 and I think they have listened to you and several others. A quick noise floor test was about -40-45 db and once I applied RX10 (free upgrade from RX9 as only got 3 days ago) down to about -55db. No RF noise that I could detect audibly with headphones at all. Cheers

My notes say the noise floor I measured with the Synco system was -40 to -45 db which I could reduce without significant artefacts in Izotope RX to -55. Why's the Comica Boom XD always been left out when it comes to these comparisons with the newer and pricier Synco? The Comica has the best versatility since there are USB-C and Lightning Receivers available which comes in handy when your phone just because it's premium (accept for Sony I must say) has no 3.5mm connector any more and you need wireless audio on there. I'd like to know how the Comica XD compares to the Synco G1 or G2 audiowise.

If you haven't got your hands on the DJI Mic, you should give it a go. I have to say I'm greatly impressed so far, as it bests the Rode system in most every way: size, ease of use, audio quality, flexibility (magnetic mount/clip mount)..and most importantly (for me) is the ability to record internally. Dropouts will happen, it's a given...so having a backup recording is crucial. RIP Synco. I don't expect they'll have a happy user base.

If you are testing the range of the device on the same time i.e. all On on the same time they will interferre, even if they are not on the same channel. The transmit signal from a one unit will be so strong at the adjacent unit that it will cause the radio to be compressed (clipping) due to the strong signal. This will cause the receiver to turn down the gain (AGC) hence it will loose sensitvitity level. This is channel independed but depend on distance to the other unit + time of the TX/RX frames of the radio signal. The longer time of TX/RX frame they higher risk of collition from a close by interferrer.

Good morning Paul, long time, no type. Thought I'd share my recent experience with the Hollyland Lark 150. This unit has been a nightmare for me. Long story short, I had issues with mine about 6 months in. Firmware updates are a huge pain if you're a Mac user. That didn't work so they had me ship it to Texas (AT MY EXPE NSE???) for repair. The RMA tracking system is pathetic - it makes no sense and was never updated. I finally got a replacement unit. I used it on a job and on day two, it would no longer pair. I've reset all four components - nothing. The customer 'service' seems to be Asia-based so, being in the US, every exchange took 24 hours. The emails were difficult to decipher and the process just took forever. After two unusable units, I don't think I could ever trust it for professional work which is a shame because the form-factor, sound quality, etc are surprisingly good for the money. I wasted a lot of time on set and looked like a chump in front of my client. Hope you're well - looking forward to new content from you!

I'm really sorry to hear that Matt... sounds like a nightmare and never good in front of the clients. I must be honest, I've broken one of my TX units too. A little sideways pressure on the 3.5 mic jack is all it takes to snap it right off the board inside. Such a shame because the idea was good. I see DJI have just launched an almost identical setup. I wonder if that's better built?

Hi, greetings from Cali Colombia, i really liked this video, but stil SO confused, i mean, it is clear, Rode, sounds great, but not lav mic included and the gain settings is poor, synco, so disappointing, but the Lark 150, sounds great, really low floor noise (it seems at lest) but crappy lav mics... So, all of that is clear, buy the larks, with other lavs, BUT, what if i have to record in a field recorder like zoom F8? How can i split the L and R signals, but with balanced cables each splited cable? I mean, i need to plug from the out of the receiver both lines with balanced cables (xlr or trs, doesn't matter) there's some how to do that? Do you know the FDTech or Feidu FD40 or FD50? Can you tell me what do you think about those or maybe the Comica or the Pixel Voical Air??? (Those are UHF actually) I don't know what to do!!! It is frustrating!! (Actually the 2.4Gs, aren't enough, cause sometimes i have to work with more than 6 actor's at the time, so more than 4 transmitters at 2.4Gs can create interference and drops)... Please, i need a light about all of this, thanks for your help

Just to make it even more confusing... Rode have now launched the Go2 which also provides two channels. I haven't tried the others you mention, but there's been a few on here praising the Comica units a lot. Good point about splitting the channels. I'm no sound engineer, so you might be able to help me here... if the L and R signals are leaving the Hollyland unit through a single 3.5mm TRS, then that can't be balanced... but is it then possible to split that signal into two mono balanced cables? Wouldn't you need a way to reverse polarise one feed in each cable or am I over thinking this?

Solid review! BTW, all my sound recordist friends a bit snarky towards us camera guys. It comes with the territory. I typically use Sennheiser G3 radio mics, but also have RodeLink wireless as a back up. The Rode has been susceptible to interference, especially when used next to my Sennheisers, so I think Rode is light on shielding, or maybe their transmission/reception power is just not strong. The Hollyland Lark looks like an interesting product and potentially good value, but (1) the battery charging process concerns me and (2) the lav mic is sub-standard. FWIW, I would use a different lav mic with any of these devices. I think the Hollyland Lark is the best option here. The Synco unit is a non-starter.
