His books were based on European mythology. European mythology is filled with a diverse range of creatures... But in no accounts I have read, are those creatures racially diverse. There can't really be a younger Gandalf, because in the lore Wizards don't age. They are spirit beings who have taken the form of old men to walk Middle-Earth. So hiring a younger actor to play Gandalf would be tricky. Also, I too hope that they are not going to make LOTR woke. I can't stand that stuff. I'm not getting my hopes up, though, because every studio out there seems determined to bastardize every beloved franchise out there.

Gandalf has always looked like an old man while living in Middle Earth, he only looked young while living in the undying lands. He also wasn't sent to Middle Earth until the 3rd age so he wouldn't be in the show.

There's no Gandalf in the Second Age. He's still Olorin and in Valinor at the time. The Wizards, or Istari, don't come to Middle Earth until sometime in the Third Age, after Sauron is defeated in the War of the Last Alliance. They are sent by the Vala to ensure Sauron is killed for good and prevent another Melkor from happening since the conflict that ultimately defeated Melkor literally destroyed about 1/3 of Middle-Earth. FWIW I'm terrified of what Amazon might do with this show. The downfall of Numenor is tragic enough, I don't need modern entertainment tropes to make it even worse.

The Haradrim (people from the land or Harad to the south of Gondor) would make sense to be black as they come from a desert (could be Tolkien's version of Africa) but I don't know if the show would have the balls because they would be the 'bad guys' and kept getting defeated. Also the Corsairs of Umbar (Umbar is Harad's main port) could be Tolkien's Somali pirates.

The Haradrim would be great to use because in the second age they were most certainly NOT the bad guys. The Numenorians were, as they colonized and enslaved the people of Harad for human sacrifice as they believed them to be lesser men. Perfect anti-racist anti-colonialist message that Tolkien was fully behind, and I'm sure it'll trigger all of the whiny reactionaries in this comment section.
