Fun fact, Peter Jackson couldn't get enough extras for the Helms Deep scene, so he made the controversial decision to hire real orcs as actors. Before that point, orcs were not accepted in Hollywood. But now, most actors are orcs wearing human makeup. It's amazing how much progress has been made in so little time.

The ring being a hindrance is the point. People want it because it’s a legendary object and they believe it will give them power. It’s part of the lie. Also, the ring has a will of it’s own and can influence people psychically. The greater your desire for power is the easier it is for the ring to influence you. That’s why hobbits make ideal ring bearers as they generally don’t care much for power.

I love how "why not just the eagles" is SUCH a common question Tolkien himself realized they broke his plot so he added info in the books as to why the eagles wouldn't help most of the time. "the rings were more of a hindrance than a help" - that, exactly, is the point Tolkien was trying to make
@lauraroth6630
@lauraroth6630 Жыл бұрын
I also think based on many things that Tolkien said, is that he didn’t even think abt the eagles taking Frodo and Sam to Mordor when he originally wrote LOTR because having the eagles take them to Mordor doesn’t make for a story nearly as interesting as Frodo and Sam (and Gollum) having to make the trek themselves. So that’s why he then clarified later that the eagles only came to help Frodo and Sam later is because they’re a race that doesn’t participate in Middle Earth affairs, and only made exceptions as a favor to Gandalf, who is a minor god. So instead of them participating in destroying the ring, they only swoop in after the ring’s destroyed to save Frodo and Sam. And the biggest reason for why the eagles didn’t take them to Mordor was bc the whole mission relied on stealth: Frodo and Sam needed Sauron to not see them, otherwise the mission would’ve failed, and of course, if they in on the backs of huge eagles, Sauron’s gonna be able to spot them and stop them from miles away.

The movie adds a moment or two of Sauron seeing the hobbits, but apparently he doesn’t realize what it is he is seeing. They’re added for dramatic effect and don’t make too much sense, but I just imagine that he doesn’t realize who they are somehow. Near the end, he senses Frodo putting the ring in Mount Doom and sends the Nazgûl About the eagles, it wouldn’t make any sense tactically to take the eagles to Mordor with the Ring. Sauron would see the eagles and send all his forces after the eagles. The Nazgûl’s flying fellbeasts would fight the eagles, and/or the army of orcs would shoot them down. Sauron’s forces were more powerful than the forces of good, so they had to be stealthy about it.

@@vinnicinhus44 I remember that from the film. I like to think Sauron didn’t realize what he was seeing in that moment because if he did but did nothing about the hobbit with his ring inside Mordor, then he’s the biggest idiot to ever live. The film added that moment to be more dramatic, but it makes Sauron look dumb if he directly looks at Frodo and does nothing. Either way, if they came in on giant eagles, they’d be much more conspicuous, and not even movie Sauron would ignore that. The mission could only succeed if Sauron did not know about their plan to destroy the Ring and was unaware of the Ring reaching Mount Doom. Sauron’s forces were too powerful to fight directly.

1:08:00 the funny thing is, Frodo is supposed to be old enough to be Sam's DAD. He looks in his (human) 20s because of the ring but he's middle aged. Sam was the son of Frodo's gardener. So a lot of the shippy stuff is supposed to be read as father-son like. Also, Pippin is literally underaged! Hobbits come of age at 33, Pippin is like 22. If he were a human he'd be a teenager. There’s a lot of stuff they don’t have time to explicitly explain, but it’s still in the movies if you read the books. Here’s a few examples: The other rings DO actually do stuff, but like…..most of the races that have one of the rings of power kinda…agreed not to use them anymore since they found out that the one ring actually has the power to highjack and corrupt all the other ones if Sauron wields it. The “invisibility cloaks” they have actually are enchanted. They’re elven cloaks that don’t grant “invisibility” per se, but excellent camouflage. Like you saw, they can perfectly mimic the scenery around them and look like rocks or even trees, and grass. The bread they eat is called Lembas bread and is also enchanted. A single bite or mouthful can sustain a grown man for an entire day. That’s why they don’t TECHNICALLY need any other rations, it’s just kinda boring tasting to have a bite of bread for each meal. Everyone points out that “why didn’t they have the eagles take them into Mordor?” But you have to realize the eagles are their own race and society that doesn’t really care what happens to the world of men, and they are a very prideful and cynical race. In the prequel, the hobbit, they only BARELY talk to Gandalf and give Bilbo and the dwarves he travels with help like…for a few days before dropping them off and not wanting anything else to do with them. Aragorn isn’t immortal or even have a lifespan as long as an elf, but he is descended from a special line of men that were blessed with long life, but they almost have all died out. Aragorn I think lived until he was about 200-250 years old. Arwen outlived him by a lot tho, I think she was alive for almost 800 years. Although, like….if Arwen was gonna end up with any mortal dude, at least Aragorn lived quite a bit longer than most

I cannot believe how much he was distracted by the cgi etc. LOTR is known for having timeless effects that were really good for their time and still are. Sure, the slow motion scenes aren't the best but otherwise I don't see a problem. Besides, nowadays movies like Marvel movies that should have amazing graphics do not have pleasing graphics. Sure they look quite flawless but they do not look real! There's one really good video about this matter on youtube but I cannot remember its name, I think it was something about LOTR's cinematics.

The three hairs she gives Gimli actually have a really cool and sweet backstory. Thousands of years before the most talented elf craftsman of middle earth demanded a single hair from her head to infuse their 'golden beauty' into three gems he crafted. Those gems were the silmarils and they sparked the second war of power between the original dark lord and the other god-like beings of middle earth that tore the planet apart. But she looked into his soul and saw that he wanted her hair in order to own something unique and of beauty that no other elf could possess and found his reason insufficient so she denied him. She denied this elf who was basically a craftsman so talented he was considered godlike by all others in middle earth. Then thousands of years later a dwarf she did not know came to her kingdom (dwarfs and elves had a long and fraught past) and she offered him anything he wished. He asked for a single strand of her hair to remember the beauty of the time he spent in her kingdom. Touched by his reasoning she gave him not one but three.

"why wont Gandalf cast the spells??" I too asked myself this question. Then I took a class on Tolkien and learned the way. Gandalf, and the other wizards, are basically demi-gods. each stands for something. Gandalf's is Wisdom; he guides humanity to their own choices and does not rule over them or bend nature to his whim with his powers (unlike Saruman). And another fun fact. The Balrog used to be one of them! But it got too greedy and was consumed by the power it craved and turned into the Balrog we all hate today.

The amount that Tolkien drew from Norse mythology is incredible. Many names of characters, particularly in the hobbit are directly copied from the poetic edda. Examples: Kili, Fili, Durin, Gandalf, Thorin, Oakenshield. Middle earth even roughly translates to Midgard, which was the old Norse term for the realm of men.

As a no-life Tolkien junkie, I love and hate everything about this video. Take my like, sir. A couple points: - The power of the Rings is extremely complicated to explain (Tolkien had a profound knowledge of Catholic Christian metaphysics), but in short it gives different powers to different people. So to hobbits it's just ass, but to Gandalf and Galadriël for instance it would be extremely fearsome. - Stop hating on Éowyn, mate. She is queen. - Gandalf has no power over the Great Eagles of Manwë. He just used the moths to kindly ask them for help. - Also no one can really 'cast magic' in this world. In the books Frodo asks Galadriël how Elves are so magical and she tells him Elves have no concept of magic -- it's just how the world works. This is not Harry Potter with cheap tricks -- magic in Tolkien's world is mysterious, unforeseeable and incomprehensible; although in Tolkien's Legendarium it's all eventually explained based on Metaphysics. - Legolas is an amazing character in the book. P.J. just forgot to add his personality into the script.

I know this is now 3 years ago, but thanks for watching the whole trilogy back to back! There are a few points that's worth clarifying for someone like you who hadn't read the books: - 1. The books obviously expand a lot more on a lot of the things you were wondering about. But mainly that the Three Elven Rings are there as protective magic, to maintain and preserve, they're not offensive weapons. The One Ring is wholly evil and is like the ultimate heroin - so if you use it it will not only let Sauron know where you are but it takes over your soul. Like heroin it induces a craving that cannot be lost, even after the Ring moves on to someone else - hence Bilbo and Gollum's cravings for it. The One Ring is there to allow Sauron to enslave those who use any of the lesser Rings (including the Three) - hence the Nine Nazgul fell under his spell. The Elves did not because they realised his plan and took their Three Rings off when Sauron still had his One Ring, only using them after he was cast down in the prologue of the film. The One Ring though allowed him to put forth his power into his servants and even into buildings like the big black tower in Mordor - hence when the Ring was destroyed, not only did his servants run amok, suddenly without the power of their Master but also the buildings collapsed. Sauron didn't actually die at the end of the film, but was so reduced by the destruction of the Ring that he could never again have any kind of power and was essentially a bodiless spirit. 2. Magic in Tolkien's story is much more subtle than is often portrayed in Fantasy Fiction that came after it. The act of casting spells is much, much harder than is commonly the case elsewhere and therefore you don't see Gandalf overtly casting magic very often. There are also relatively few magic-casters, so that's why you don't see an army of evil mages counter-acting Gandalf, Galadriel and so on. 3. You kept referring to "oil" and how it should be used. It's worth remembering that before our modern era of digging oil out of the ground or from under the sea with miles of subterranean drilling, the only oil you could get easily was from plants or animals. You just wouldn't have had enough to set light to an entire plain in order to defend a castle. 4. You're right that Legolas' character was relatively poorly-developed compared to others. But I suppose his greatest character achievement is that through his friendship with Gimli, he put an end to thousands of years of enmity between Elves and Dwarves. Again, this is better portrayed in the books - naturally the films would have been even longer than they were if they had attempted to cover that. 5. The power of the One Ring cannot be "used" by anyone easily, unless it's someone like Gandalf or Saruman, who already has a lot of magical power. But for them, the risk is that it completely corrupts them and that is why Gandalf was almost afraid of being offered the Ring by Frodo in the first film and doesn't even pick it up. He knows it would turn him evil and would make him into a new Dark Lord essentially. That is why the Ring had to be carried by the most innocuous, seemingly-powerless bearer, a Hobbit. Men are too easy to corrupt, even Elves and Dwarves would be corrupted too. But the books tell that Hobbits due to their much more simple and innocent nature are harder to turn than other races. Even then, Frodo did fall to the Ring in the end at the last moment, but none of the others in the Fellowship would have done any better, and the non-Hobbits would have fallen to the Ring sooner. 6. Some of the false deaths you refer to were more shocking at the time, because while the films were shot back-to-back, there was still a significant gap (about a year) between the theatrical releases. So for instance while you said you knew Aragorn hadn't died by the fact his image is on the Return of the King merchandise, this would not have been in existence yet back at the time of the Two Towers. So in the middle of the Two Towers, when Aragorn "falls", you don't know that he was going to come back for that particular reason. Of course, you know by then that Gandalf is back so Aragorn can be brought back too, and you never see Aragorn's dead body, but other than that, it's not quite as obvious as it seems now. 7. Again, the books cover this better, but Aragorn is from a race of higher men called the Numenoreans who have by this time dwindled in number to a handful. This is why he is so epic in fighting, so noble in character and is long-lived (he actually lives to over 200 years of age). This race was epic because they were early on in the history of Middle Earth blessed by the Gods for helping them in the fight against the early Big Bad Morgoth (Sauron's old boss). They also have some elf-blood within them - Aragorn for instance is distantly related to Elrond, as Elrond's late twin brother Elros was Aragorn's distant forefather thousands of years back.

I want them to be immersed in the movie so I don't want to talk to them while watching and I don't want to be that annoying person who ruins the scenes by throwing LOTR trivia around. But at the same time I always want to tell them that Viggo Mortensen broke his toe when he kicked that helmet that's why his scream of pain was so realistic. So I compartmentalize my hopefully fun facts after we finish the movie and that's when I bombard them with my highly unnecessary LOTR knowledge. lol.
