First of all there isn't a bad Seger song. He's just amazing. Keep in mind that for years he was a regional artist in the Michigan area. He had a little success in '69 with Ramblin Gamblin Man but didn't break big nationally until Night Moves in '76. I know that you wanted something earlier than Night Moves but you've already done Turn the Page which was from '73. If you do anything prior to Night Moves, check to see if it's on his "Live Bullet" album. If so, do the version from Live Bullet. That is one of the greatest live albums ever. Everything on there tops the studio version. My recommendation would be the one that many others have suggested - Roll Me Away. It's a very powerful song, great lyrics and amazing vocals. I'd also suggest that you do the official video for it so that you can see Seger deliver the song. Seger's got a ton of hits, but if you want a deep cut then try "The Fire Inside". It's a lesser known song that was included on his first Greatest Hits album. Fantastic lyrics and tremendous vocals. The official video for this one is very good too. If you just want to listen for fun, try "Making Thunderbirds". It's less than 3 minutes long but it rocks. Get Out of Denver (from Live Bullet) is always fun. Just the fact that he can sing that many words in 3 and a half minutes is incredible.

"Main Street" would be a good choice for your next Bob Seger song. It's a different kind of sound than what you have heard so far, though in terms of feel I would liken it to "Night Moves", in that it is very nostalgic. It has some really interesting guitar work, and I will leave you with this one additional tease -- it is a song that nearly every exotic dancer featured in her act during the late '70s. Listen to it to find out why!

Great memory for me, I just bought a 78 Camaro and me and a buddy of mine decided to just go to California, no hotel reservations, no plan no nothing. This song was perfectly timed as we drove around Santa Monica. We noticed a lot of posters about "Cars" concert and asked some surfer what that was all about and he thought they were a band, little did we know that across the street at the civic center a new band, you guessed it... the Cars was in concert and we heard my best friend's girl playing on the radio on drive back to Phoenix. Thanks for the trip back in time.

One of his earliest “hits” was Rambiln’ Gamblin’ Man, performed as the Bob Seger System (1968 or 69 I think?). It’s a great song and if you listen closely you will hear a young 17 year old Glenn Frey signing background (he hung out at the recording studio and was mentored by Bob)

Rambling Gambling Man should be next - definitely! It's interesting that you talk about him developing over two years since Night Moves. RGM was his first hit single, and it was 10 full years before Hollywood Nights. Bob was a touring veteran by the time Hollywood Nights came out - a real road warrior. Interesting fact: Glen Frey of the Eagles was a good friend of Bob's and he appeared on RGM in '68. Personal favorites that I'd love to see you guys check out: Main Street, Traveling Man/Beautiful Loser (live version from Live Bullet - same album as Turn the Page). Against the Wind is another awesome song. Seger is a great American storyteller - and very underrated by some. Glad you guys are enjoying!

I totally agree that this sounds like a progression from Night Moves. He was a midwestern boy "out past the cornfields where the woods got heavy", and thought it would be a good idea to go west. Then he was blinded by the beauty of the California girls and their diamonds and frills. He lost sight of everything and just wanted to get home.

Excellent choice! Next should be "Fire Lake", which features backing vocals by three members of The Eagles. EDIT: I went to California in 2007 for a family reunion. Fun fact: when he wrote this he was renting a place in Hollywood Hills and there was a magazine in the coffee table with Cheryl Tiegs on he cover.
